The Last Crusade





    CHAPTER 20

Luis was wide-eyed as he looked at his father in disbelief. “Where is he? What happened to Antonio?”

“I really don't think now is the time to be getting into this Luis,” Martin said.

“But Papa...”

“Luis,” Hal interjected. “This isn't the time. “Just know your brother is alive. I took a chance on bringing Martin here so soon, but after everything he's gone through I couldn't keep him away any longer. When the time is right, you will find all the answers you need.”

Luis was visibly disappointed. He was about to protest again, but something told him he'd better let it rest. He wanted answers, but knowing Antonio was alive was more than he knew ten minutes ago.

“Right now Luis, you, Sheridan and I have some business to attend. Martin, you are welcome to join us, but remember you may not interfere in this part of the operation. I will explain everything to all of you over dinner.”

Sheridan and Luis excused themselves in order to get ready for dinner. Hal told them to take their time; he'd fill Martin in on all the gaps while they were gone. They set a time for 7:00 to meet for dinner, which would give Hal plenty of time to talk with Martin. Though Martin and Hal were good friends and had been working together for years, anything that had happened since Hal had arrived in Harmony was unknown to Martin.

Sheridan flopped on the bed and let out an exhausted sigh. She smiled happily as she thought about all the good that had come out of today. “This has certainly been a day to remember Luis,” Sheridan said.

You can say that again,” Luis said as his killer smile took over his face. “My father is alive and in the next room. Can you imagine the look on Mama's face when she sees him again?”

“Pilar will be ecstatic,” Sheridan said excitedly. “Just like her son was earlier today. Luis, I don't think I've ever seen you so happy.”

“Sheridan, you have no idea! I mean I'm angry that he was forced to leave his family for all those years, but he's back! My father is actually back and he is the same man I remember. He's not a thief or a bum. He's the same kind, loving father and husband that I last saw 15 years ago.”

Sheridan felt a few tears start to form. She was so happy for Luis, yet it was her family that had caused his heartache. She had the same blood coursing through her veins that Alistair and Julian did. She was ashamed her last name was Crane. Really ashamed. What made matters even worse, was that much of the Crane fortune had been made illegally. Not only illegally, but also by exploiting young girls into a life no one should ever be exposed.

Luis noticed Sheridan's tears. He gently sat on the edge of the bed and pulled her up into an embrace. “Hey, what is it?” He asked softly. He gently ran his hands through her hair and for some reason Sheridan broke down. Maybe it was his genuine act of kindness. She didn't know, but she couldn't control her emotions right now. She sobbed for a few minutes uncontrollably. Luis just held her and whispered soothingly into her ear. Sheridan held him as close to her as possible. She held him as if she let go he would disappear forever.

“I'm sorry Luis” she finally managed to say. “I don't know what got into me.”

“It's all right sweetie,” he said gently kissing her forehead. “You've had a long day. You've remembered something you've tried to block out for years and found out that your father was responsible for many tragedies. I don't know how you've stayed as together as you have.”

Sheridan pulled out of his embrace slightly and looked into his warm brown eyes. She couldn't help but smile as their gazes met. “God I love you,” she said as she pulled him into a short, yet very passionate kiss.

“Wow,” Luis laughed. “What did I do to deserve that?”

“You were just being you Luis. “What would I do without you?” She asked.
“As far as I'm concerned, you'll never have to find out,” Luis answered with his best grin. “Now what do you say we get ready to go eat? The sooner we eat, the sooner we finish with our business for the night and the sooner we get back here.” Luis raised his brow in a very suggestive look.

“I like the sound of that,” Sheridan agreed with a mischievous look. Sheridan headed to the bathroom to get ready when she let out a moan.

“What is it Sheridan?” Luis asked with concern as he followed her.


“Oh my face! Look at me, I'm a mess!” She said as she saw her tear stained face in the mirror.

Luis chuckled. “Sheridan, there is no way that beautiful face of yours could ever be a mess. Now hurry up and let's go,” he said teasingly as he kissed her several times on the cheek.

“You are a very good liar sir,” she returned with a small smile.

Luis and Sheridan continued to get ready and managed to meet Martin and Hal at exactly 7:00 for dinner.

Hal had brought Martin up to speed on mostly everything that had happened before dinner. During dinner Luis told Martin and Hal everything that had happened in New Mexico and shortly there after, regarding the Martin impostor. Hal had read the police report, but had never heard the whole thing from Luis or Sheridan. They also discussed the impostor hired to break up Luis and Sheridan. Hal had told Martin some broad details, but Luis and Sheridan filled him in on the rest.
After dinner Hal took over the conversation. “Luis has already heard this, but I need Sheridan to hear it as well. Martin, remember this goes no further than this room.”

Martin gave Hal a half smirk, half frown. “And whom precisely am I going to tell?” His blue eyes were amused by Hal's comment. Hal knew very well Martin had no intentions of telling anyone, anything.

“The tape you are about to hear is courtesy of Mitch. I realize he played a big part in all of this for the Cranes, but he has proved his worth to us since then.” Hal pushed the play button and sat back as they all listened.

“You are to make sure Sheridan sees you with another woman. I mean really sees you intimate with another woman.

“That's Julian's voice,” Sheridan said as she listened to the tape. Luis nodded his head.

You make sure she hears you tell this woman how you still managed to deceive her. Build yourself up. Let her hear you talk about the insurance policy you took out on her life. How you are planning on killing her as soon as you are married. Then you'll not only have money from the insurance, but the drug cartel will pay you a huge fee for finishing the job. You'll have the perfect cover.”

Luis saw the look of horror spread across Sheridan's face and he wrapped his arms around her protectively.

“How do I get rid of the real Luis?”

“I don't care, how you do it. Just make sure his body is never recovered.”

Hal watched Martin's expression and he saw it fill with hatred. Martin had never gotten over his anger at what they had done to him, so he knew hearing from Julian's own mouth their plans for his son must be killing him.

“And you are sure Sheridan won't confront him on this? Even after she suspects an impostor?”
“She'll never say a thing. My sister doesn't like being used. This will be the biggest insult of all to her pride. It's one thing for her to believe he used her, but now she'll think he's trying to kill her. You will allow her to escape and we will leak the news to the press. Luis' name will be ruined. He will go on the run and search as they may, no one will ever find him. Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald will never pose a threat to this family again.”

Sheridan sat there in shock. Tears in her eyes as the full impact hit her. She was now hearing the truth about her family from her brother's own mouth. “How can they do this?” She asked, not really expecting an answer.

“Forgive me for saying this Julian, but isn't this being a little extreme?”

“That is none of your business. My father and I are paying you, very well I might add to do a job and we expect it to be done.”

“Whatever you say.”
Hal shut the recorder off and looked up. “The good news is, we know what their plan is and Mitch is working for us. This incident alone is enough to bury Julian Crane for a long time.”

“Those bastards never give up do they?” Martin spat angrily. “It wasn't bad enough they ruined my life, and already caused my family an unspeakable amount of pain, but now they want to kill Luis? Why? Besides that, look what pain they'd cause one of their own?”

“There is more,” Hal said.

“MORE?” Sheridan asked incredulously. “Wasn't that enough?”

“Enough isn't in the vocabulary of Alistair and Julian Crane,” Martin said bitterly. Martin remembered that Sheridan was a Crane and quickly apologized. “Sheridan I'm sorry. I can't seem to control my anger when your family is involved. Please know I don't blame you for any of this, nor do I blame others in your family. This is about the Crane men and their insatiable hunger for money and power and be damned the consequences.”

“I agree with you about Julian and Alistair, but Ethan is nothing like either of them,” Sheridan said in defense of her nephew.

“That's because Ethan's not a Cr... I mean that's because his mother has successfully kept him away from Julian and Alistair so far. I hope for his sake it continues that way,” Martin said.
“This conversation takes place shortly after Mitch left the mansion.” Hal again turned the recorder on and they listened.

“Julian Crane here.”

“Julian is it done?”

“That's my father,” Sheridan said in surprise.

“Yes Father.”

“When?”

“Hopefully within the week, Father.”

“What do you mean hopefully? Damn it Julian! When I said I wanted this done, I meant it!”

“Don't worry Father, everything is under control.”

“It better be. Need I remind you what is at stake here? If Sheridan ever tells Luis what she knows, the future of the entire Crane family will be in jeopardy. I will not allow that snooping cop to destroy our lives.”

“I understand Father.”

“Good. Sheridan and Luis must never be allowed to talk. We know she hasn't told him yet. If she had we would have already felt the fall out. Luis' name and reputation MUST be destroyed. His word MUST be worth nothing. Sheridan MUST be convinced he is out for blood and finally Luis must NEVER be seen in Harmony again. Do you understand Julian? Do you know what NEVER means?”

“Yes Father. It has been taken care of. The real Luis Lopez Fitzgerald will NEVER be seen again after week`s end.”

“Fine Julian. I'll be in touch.”

The line clicked. There was a moment's silence. Then they heard Julian again. “Damn. Why now? Why must I go through this again? Damn Martin Fitzgerald and Damn his son.” A moment later a door slammed and again there was silence.

Sheridan was literally shaking. She knew her father was involved in all of this, but somehow hearing his voice telling Julian what he wanted done, made it all real. More real than she cared to admit. Sheridan wrapped her arms around herself trying to warm herself. She knew now beyond a shadow of a doubt that her father had absolutely no use for her. The way he spoke to Julian, the manner in which he seemed to hold her in contempt. There had to be a mistake. This man could not possibly be her father.

Sheridan felt Luis' strong arms wrap around her. She could feel love and warmth from his embrace and knew this was real love. She knew Luis loved HER. The only time her father ever showed her any attention was when he wanted something. His idea of love was how many presents he bought you for your birthday or Christmas. She remembered how lonely each Christmas had been for her over the years. The tree completely surrounded by presents for her. Things everywhere, but no love.

Sheridan smiled as she thought of the best present she'd ever received. It was a compact Luis had bought her for Christmas last year. He'd told her it wasn't really a Christmas present, but she didn't care. The idea that he spent the time and energy to go out himself and look for the perfect compact for her, to replace her broken one meant more to her than the hundreds of “things” she received from her father out of duty. She was only saddened by the fact that she'd lost the compact in Paris. As hurt and angry as she was at Luis at the time she never wanted to part with that compact.

“Sheridan are you O.K.?” Luis asked.

“What? Did you say something Luis?” She asked.

“You were a million miles away Sheridan, are you all right?”

“Yeah, I'm fine Luis,” she said with a small smile.

“If everyone is ready, I'd like you to meet the woman who is going to help us play out Julian and Alistair's little scenario,” Hal said. Hal walked over to one of the bedrooms and opened the door motioning for someone to come forward.

Beth Wallace entered the room. “Hi,” she smiled. “Luis, Sheridan, Mr. Fitzgerald, it's great to see you. I'm glad you finally came home.”

“Beth,” Luis said stunned. “What are you doing here?”

“Agent Freeman thinks I'm the perfect choice for you to tell your plans to in order to fool the Cranes,” Beth answered.

Martin remembered Beth as a child. She had been one of Luis' closest friends besides Hank. He always figured Luis and Beth would get married someday. Luis' relationship with Beth was a topic Luis deliberately didn't tell his father about.

Sheridan stiffened when she saw Beth. She knew Luis loved her, but she also knew Beth was in love with Luis and would do anything to get him back. She knew Luis cared about Beth too, which helped fuel her twinge of jealousy.

“Hal, I don't think this is a good idea. We shouldn't involve Beth in this. She might get hurt,” Luis said.

“I think I can handle it Luis. You know I'd do anything for you Luis,” she said with a smile.

Sheridan grabbed Luis hand under the table and held on tight. “Really Beth, this isn't a good idea,” Luis restated. “You have no idea what you could be getting yourself into.”

“I know exactly what I've gotten myself into,” Beth said with a grin. Beth gave Luis a wink then looked at Hal. Hal nodded his head.

Beth then looked at the group in front of her and put her hand up to her face, peeling off a mask. Once the mask was off, Hal reintroduced them. “Luis, Sheridan, Martin, meet Agent Andrea Rugerio, aka Beth Wallace.

Luis sat there with his mouth hung open wide. Sheridan and Martin were also surprised but not nearly as surprised as Luis. “Oh my God,” he said staring at Andrea. “You looked just like her, sounded just like her. How?”

“That's my job Officer,” Andrea told him in her own voice. “I impersonate people.”

“You would have fooled her own mother,” Luis said earnestly.

“Thank you. I'll take that as a compliment.”

Luis stood there, still shaking his head in disbelief. “I never would have believed it if I hadn't seen you pull that mask off,” he finally said. Luis suddenly realized what he'd just said. It hit him like a bolt of lightening and he turned to look at Sheridan. “Oh God, Sheridan, I am so sorry,” Luis said.
“What are you sorry for Luis,” she asked.

“I'm sorry for what you had to go through. I never fully understood until this moment how you could have been so totally fooled by an impostor, but after seeing Beth, uh Andrea, I know what you must have gone through. I'm sorry you believed it was me that said all those terrible things to you.”

Sheridan gave Luis a quick kiss on the cheek. “It's all forgotten,” she said sweetly.

Luis smiled back and then they returned their attention to Hal.

“I'm glad you all approve of Andrea's performance. Miss Crane has already witnessed Mitch's performance and from what I hear it was quite believable,” Hal said.

“I'll say,” Sheridan said grimly.

“I have a very important question to ask of Miss Crane,” Hal announced seriously. Sheridan listened to Hal carefully. “Sheridan, can you watch a scene unfold between Luis and Beth, knowing they are both impostors, and react as if it were real? A scene that would include an intimate moment between the two, in which Luis is confessing his secrets to Beth? A scene, which would include all of the things Julian, wants you to hear?”

Sheridan thought for a moment. She ran through her mind the scene she overheard at the wharf. The night she overheard Luis or the man impersonating Luis say all those horrible things about her. She knew it was an impostor now, but she still felt a sting every time she relived it in her mind. Could she manage to be upset seeing Luis intimate with Beth even though it wasn't Luis? Hearing Luis tell Beth he planned to kill her? Admit he'd played her for a fool?

“Yes,” she said quietly. “I could believe it was real.”

“Would you, believing it was real, confront him?”

Sheridan thought again. “No. I'd get as far away from him as I could. I'd never forgive myself for letting my guard down again. I'd probably never trust another man as long as I lived.”

Luis could see the pain building within Sheridan. He knew doubts were starting to creep up again and he didn't like it. Not one bit. “Hal, I think Sheridan's had enough for one day. She shouldn't have to think about this right now.”

“That's fine Luis, Hal said. “I apologize, but I had to know. The outcome of this sting depends solely on Sheridan's reaction to what she sees.”

“When is this going to happen Hal?” Luis asked. He kept glancing at Sheridan who seemed to be in somewhat of a trance.
“Tomorrow night,” Hal said.

“Fine. We're leaving now. I will talk to you tomorrow.” Luis stood up and helped Sheridan stand. He didn't like the look on her face at all. He prayed he could pull her out of this as he walked her to their room.




                         CHAPTER 21


Sheridan walked right into the bathroom and turned the shower on when she and Luis left the group. Luis heard the door lock with a loud click. He let out a loud sigh as he let his weary body fall onto the couch. He ran his hands absent-mindedly through his hair as he recalled the last portion of their conversation with Hal.

Luis jumped up from the couch. “Damn it!” he yelled in frustration. “Why did that have to happen? God, what she must be thinking right now. I have to stop her before she totally confuses this with reality. He walked over to the bathroom door and raised his hand to knock when he caught himself. “What am I doing?” he asked. “She's a big girl. She knows this isn't real. She saw Andrea take off that mask. Oh God that mask. I still can't believe how much like Beth she really looked and sounded.”

Luis had wandered over to the window and just stared. He stared at nothing in particular, just into space. He remembered the mask, the impostor and how Hal had asked Sheridan if she could act as if this was all real...

Sheridan stood under the warm spray of the shower and tried to forget. Forget the memories of the impostor that had all but destroyed her life a few months ago. Now, the FBI was not only asking her to remember, but relive an even more heartbreaking scene. One in which Luis would be intimate with another woman, telling Beth of all people, how he planned on killing her and profiting from it.

“STOP IT Sheridan!” she scolded herself. “This isn't real! You saw that woman. It wasn't Beth. It was an FBI agent who was deliberately disguised to look like Beth. Sheridan heaved a sigh as she kept telling herself it was all part of the FBI's plan. So much had happened to her in the last few weeks, especially the last few days. Never mind that how about just today! She thought back to her hypnosis session that morning. Not only had she never killed Luis' father, she never killed anyone. Then Martin is alive standing in front of them. She smiled as she remembered the look on Luis' face when he came face to face with his father after all this time. Slowly her solemn mood lightened and she turned off the shower. “I need to apologize to Luis,” she said as she dried off. He must think I've totally lost it.”

Martin and Hal sat in the command center talking when they heard a slight buzzing noise. Hal placed his finger to his lip, indicating to Martin to remain silent and they both walked over to the desk and listened. It was a buzz telling them that Julian Crane was using his telephone.

“Julian Crane here.”

“Julian, What's going on?”

“Father, how are you?”

“Never mind that. I want to know what's going on with this mess you've gotten us into.”

“I? Why Father, I...”

“Just answer the question Julian. When will we be rid of Luis?”

“I talked to our friend earlier today Father. He assured me tomorrow night he will take care of Luis.”

“Good. Very good.”

“I told you before Father, there is nothing to worry about. Everything is under control.”

“I doubt that Julian. You've never had control of this situation. If you had, there would be no need of any of this.”

“By this time tomorrow night, Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald will no longer be a threat to us and Sheridan will be crying her little eyes out somewhere over that no good cop using her again and thinking he was planning on killing her.”

“Sheridan was warned to stay away from him and she refused to listen. This is her fault you realize Julian. Your sister is the weak link in this family. She always has been.”

“Yes Father.”

“About that other matter.”

“Which matter is that Father?”

“The cottage Julian. How could you possibly let it slip your mind.”

“Ah yes, the cottage.”

“Are those FBI agents still snooping around?”

“Are they ever. You'd think they'd never seen a explosion before.”

“This isn't good Julian. We must take care of things down there as soon as possible.”
“I understand that Father, but I can't exactly go down there while the agents are sifting through the ashes, now can I?”

“Have they found anything?”

“No, of course not. They'll never find it. There is only one person besides you or I who has ever seen it and he was killed years ago.”

“Yes Julian, but we never did find his body now did we?”

“That idiot probably just told us the wrong location Father. After all, there are so many secluded areas in this part of the country. His body probably decomposed long ago.”

“Let's hope so Julian.”

“Really Father. He would have come back long ago if he were alive.”

“The minute the FBI is gone, I want that cottage taken care of Julian.”

“It will be Father.”

“I'll call you tomorrow Julian. I'll want more details by then.”

“Of course Father.”

“Goodnight Julian.”

“Goodnight Father.”

The phone line clicked. A sound was heard of Julian pouring a drink, probably his brandy. “God help us all,” was heard. Hal clicked off the speaker.

Martin was holding his anger in check. Just the sound of their voices made his blood boil. Hal knew how Martin felt and knew his hatred had grown over the years. “Martin, it will all be over tomorrow night. We'll have them. Both of them.”

“How can you be so sure we'll have Alistair. You said yourself, no one has seen him around Harmony in at least five years. How can you arrest someone if they aren't around?”

“Oh he's in Harmony all right.”

“Come on now, Hal,” Martin said in disbelief. “How can you believe that. Surely someone would have seen him by now.”

“Trust me Martin. He's here. Do you really think he would leave his entire empire in the hands of Julian? You heard the way the man talks to him. Julian is nothing but a flunky to Alistair.”

“I may agree with that, but...”

“Martin, just trust me. We will arrest Alistair Crane at the same time we arrest Julian. We may have to go light on Julian though,” Hal said in dismay.

“Light? Why? He's planning my son's murder for crying out loud!”

“At whose request Martin? Who is the mastermind behind this?”

“I know that Hal, but the thought of Julian Crane walking off Scott free makes me sick.”

“I never said anything about him walking off Scot free. I just said we may have to go lighter on Julian than Alistair. If we can convince Julian his sentence will be reduced if he testifies against his father, we can make this case open and shut and spare Sheridan even more grief than she's already gone through.”

Martin nodded his head in agreement. “I have to agree with you on that one. That poor girl has had her share of nightmares, no pun intended. I never could understand how her family, her father especially could treat her in the manner they did. She was such a sweet little girl Hal. She deserved a better life than living with that band of thieves.”

“Maybe she was lucky she spent so much time in Europe. A lonely life certainly is better than a life filled with abuse from Alistair Crane.”

“You may be right about that Hal,” Martin said in agreement. “I just hope that after all this is over, she can live a normal happy life without interference from her family.”

Hal smiled. “Do you think that life will include your son?”

“If the looks that I've seen between them is any indication and we manage to take care of Alistair Crane, then I would have to say definitely,” Martin said. “Those two look like they were made for each other.”

“They certainly do appear to be in love with one another. From what Sam told me a few weeks ago, everyone in town knew it but them for quite awhile.”

“Thanks to Julian and Alistair no doubt,” Marin said cynically.

“In case you haven't noticed Martin, it hasn't stopped them yet.” Hal said. “Somehow they found out the truth without anyone's help.”

“I'll still feel better once those two are locked up for good,” Martin said. “I want my life back. I want to see my children and my wife.”

“Soon Martin,” Hal said. “It will all be over very soon.”

“I know,” Martin said. “I'm going to bed Hal. It's been a very long day and tomorrow will be longer still.”

“That's for sure,” Hal agreed.

Hal arranged for Martin to be escorted to his room and the two men bid goodnight.

Luis heard the lock click on the bathroom door and quickly turned around to see Sheridan standing there in her towel. She gave him a shy smile and walked over to him. She saw the worried look in his eyes and realized how her reaction must have effected him.

“Luis, I'm sorry for earlier. I guess I just got caught up for a minute. When I imagined that scene for Hal, it nearly killed me trying to believe it was you.”

“Sheridan, if you don't want to go through with this, I'll go tell Hal right now. He did a good job of finding an impersonator for Beth, maybe they can find one for you as well.”

“No Luis,” she said. “I want to do this. Just promise me, you'll be there to bring me back to reality when it's all over. Tomorrow I'm really going to have to get into it if I'm going to make my reaction seem believable.”

“Are you sure about this?” Luis asked, not truly convinced it was a good idea.

“I'm sure Luis. I want this whole thing over with as soon as possible. I want my life back. No. I take that back. I want a new life. A life free of the Cranes. Well, free of my father and brother anyway.”

“All right Sheridan. I'll go along with it as long as you forget about it for the rest of the night. And you remember that I'm going to be there for you the minute the police arrive.” Luis placed his hand on her shoulder as he spoke. Sheridan was touched by his concern, but now knew what she had to do.

“I promise Luis. When the time comes tomorrow, I'm going to pretend I'm in a play. I know what the others are going to say and how they're going to act, and I know exactly how I should react. For tonight,” she said with a sultry smile, “I just want to spend time with you. The one person that means more to me than life itself.”

Luis felt warm suddenly. He smiled his special smile just for her. She wrapped her hands around the back of his head and pulled him into a slow sensual kiss. A kiss that sent a message to every nerve in Luis' body to wake up. He responded to her kiss in the same fashion, slowly and deliberately.

Luis had kissed many women in his day and he and Sheridan had kissed numerous times as well, but never did he feel more alive than he did at that moment. Luis held her face gently in his hands. Sheridan lightly ran her fingers through his hair, neither one wanting this moment to end.
As if totally in synch, they both pulled back together, breathless. Neither one said a word, they just smiled at each other. Luis pulled her close to him in a tight embrace. “Always remember I love you Sheridan” he said. “I love you with all of my heart.”

“I love you Luis” she replied as she laid her head on his shoulder. She felt a tear come to her eye as she realized this might be the last night they spend together. After tomorrow evening the FBI sting would be over. There would be no reason for Sheridan to have a bodyguard. Life would return to the way it had been. Luis would go home to his family and she would return to ... Return to where? She had no home to return to. The cottage was in ashes and there was no way she was going to the main house. Even though she knew her nightmares would be no longer, she couldn't bear the thought of ever stepping in that house again, never mind sleeping there.

One of her tears must have hit Luis' shoulder, because he suddenly pulled back, his face frowning. “What is it? What's wrong?“ he asked.

Sheridan smiled and forced a quick laugh. She pulled back completely and turned her face so he wouldn't see her tears. “Oh it's nothing really,” she lied. She tried to walk away, but Luis grabbed her arm and carefully turned her around to face him. She held her head low and Luis lifted her chin until her eyes met his.

“Sheridan there is something wrong sweetie,” he said in a very tender, sweet voice. “I don't want to see you like this. Tell me what's wrong so I can help?”

Sheridan let out a genuine chuckle this time. It was either that or more tears and she didn't think either of them needed that. “I don't see how you put up with me Luis. One minute I'm a raving lunatic yelling at you and the next minute I'm acting like a child crying all the time.” She sighed deeply. She was amazed at how patient this man really was. Luis just held her face and gently rubbed her cheek with his thumb. The smallest gesture from him seemed to give her strength.

“It's silly Luis, really,” she said. “I just realized that tomorrow night this will all be over. You'll go back to your family and I'll go back to... mine.” Her voice trailed off with the last word. “Actually I guess I should talk to the front desk and see if I can rent a room for awhile. Since my cottage is in ruins, I'm going to need a place to stay.”

“Why not stay at the main house? Julian surely won't be there after tomorrow,” Luis suggested. “And your nightmares will certainly be gone.”

“Luis I'm not sure if I can explain this to you in a way that you'll really understand, but I don't want to live in the mansion. I had numerous reasons for living in the cottage, my nightmares was only part of it. I liked the feeling I had living there. It wasn't pretentious like the mansion. Sure I enjoy some of the perks of being a Crane, but there are some things I never wanted any part of. Besides, after tomorrow the Cranes may not have the mansion or anything else for that matter. We could all be out on the street.” Sheridan's mind was a whirlwind right now as the full impact of what would happen tomorrow night was hitting her.

“What are you talking about Sheridan?” Luis asked slightly confused.

“Luis, don't you see?” Sheridan explained. “If Alistair made his money from child pornography then the Federal Government has the right to seize it.”

“Surely he made money from other sources,” Luis commented.

“I'm sure he did Luis, but life as a Crane will be a living hell when this happens. The Feds will be going through the Crane accounts with a fine tooth comb. All assets will be tied up for years until it's sorted out. Thank god Ethan and Ivy will be o.k.”

“How will they be o.k. and you won't?” Luis asked.

“Because Ivy is a Winthrop. Her family has money in their own right. Ivy received a sizeable inheritance when her father died and she was smart enough to keep that money separate from Crane money.”
“I can see where some money might be tied up, but surely not all of it Sheridan,” Luis offered. I'm sure they won't touch the house.”

“Luis, I really don't even care about that,” Sheridan said in a tone slightly harsher than she meant. “I'm a well educated woman and more than capable of making a living on my own. I don't need THAT money to survive. Look, all I'm saying is life is not going to be easy for awhile. It always has been with the last name of Crane we could get anything we wanted. After tomorrow, the last name of Crane will keep us from just about everything. I may have to leave Harmony for awhile in order to get a fresh start. No one in this town will even think to give a Crane a break for awhile, no matter who it is.”

Luis didn't like the idea of Sheridan leaving town. His stomach felt a huge knot develop when she mentioned leaving town. There was no way he was going to lose her. Not now. Not after everything they'd gone through to get where they were. After all, none of this was Sheridan's fault. She was a victim of her father and brother as much as his family.

“What if your last name wasn't Crane?” Luis asked carefully.

“You mean change my name?” Sheridan asked in slight surprise. “Believe me I've thought of it. I've thought about it a lot. Any suggestions?” she asked. “I know, maybe my mother's maiden name.”

”That would be a good choice,” Luis agreed, “but I had a different name in mind.”

“You do, huh?” Sheridan said trying to read his expression. “What name do you have in mind?”

“Lopez-Fitzgerald,” he said.





                                                                     Chapter 22



Sheridan stared at Luis, totally flabbergasted by what she just heard. “What did you just say?” Sheridan asked, needing to hear it again, just to make sure she wasn't dreaming.

Luis suddenly lost his nerve. “Nothing,” he laughed nervously. “You're right. Your mother's maiden name would be perfect.”

“Luis, that isn't what you said. Not even close. Did I hear you right? Did you suggest Lopez-Fitzgerald as a new last name?” Sheridan's voice was very calm as the reality of it all set in. She just wasn't completely sure it meant what she thought it meant and needed him to clarify it for her.
Luis was visibly nervous now. He was serious when he asked her, but with everything going on, didn't think she'd feel the same way. He had no idea how to get out of this one. “You heard me right,” he admitted as he fidgeted slightly. “Look Sheridan, I didn't mean to put you on the spot. Just forget I even mentioned it.”

“You want me to forget it?” She asked in disbelief. “Why Luis? Why should I forget it? What exactly did you have in mind when you suggested your last name for mine?”

Sheridan wasn't going to let this go and Luis knew it. He'd boxed himself in a corner and had no way out except to tell her the truth. He just hoped she wouldn't be scared off by his suggestion.

“Sheridan, I told you once that when I met the right woman, I'd know it and it wouldn't matter how long I'd known her. All I've ever wanted is to settle down with the woman of my dreams and raise a family. You are that woman Sheridan. I've known it in my heart for sometime now. I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” Luis let out a breath in relief he'd gotten through with it. No he waited for her response.

“Luis,” Sheridan asked with a shy smile, “is this a proposal?”

“Yes Sheridan, it is,” Luis said. “But please don't run away from me because of it. I realize it's rather soon to be asking and with all that's going on, it's probably the wrong time completely. Just know that this is what I want and I will ask you again someday.”

Sheridan felt her heart leap upon hearing his words. Nothing had ever made her happier in her life. Luis was the man of her dreams and she wanted nothing more than to marry him. “Luis?” She asked with a coy smile.
“Yes?”

“Ask me again. Please?”

Luis looked in her eyes and knew. He caught his breath as he felt his heart pounding in his chest in anticipation. This time he got down on one knee. He took her hands in his and looked deeply into her sparkling blue eyes. “Sheridan, will you marry me?”

“Yes Luis,” she answered excitedly. “I'd love to marry you.”

“You will?” Luis asked not daring to believe she said yes.

Sheridan nodded her head yes. Her face was glowing and her smile was ear to ear. Luis never looked happier. He stood up and wrapped his arms around Sheridan's waist pulling her into a passionate kiss. He pulled away completely breathless and just stared into her beautiful blue eyes. “Sheridan, you've just made me the happiest man on earth.” His smile just then made Sheridan weak at the knees. She too was having a very difficult time holding back her excitement.

“Luis, do you realize that this is all I've ever wanted in my life? You have just made my dream come true. My life long dream has been to love a man who loves me back. A man who loves me for me and not for my family's name or power.” Her excitement shone through in her every thought, word and look. This was what she waited her whole life for.

“Sheridan, I just realized,” Luis said with a frown. “I don't have a ring for you right now.”

“Luis, I don't need a ring. I have you and that's all that matters,” Sheridan said softly.

“Well it matters to me,” he said. “I'll tell you what. First order of business the day AFTER tomorrow, we get you a ring. You can even come with me and pick it out. That way I'll know you like it.” Luis couldn't get the grin off his face. He kept staring at Sheridan. His fiancée. He liked the sound of that.

“Luis, you can pick it out,” she said demurely. “I trust your taste completely. After all, you picked out that compact you gave me last year and I loved it dearly. I only wished I hadn't lost it in Paris.” Sheridan's voice trailed off and she couldn't look Luis in the eye.

Luis looked like he'd been struck dumb for a minute. “Luis are you all right?” Sheridan asked.

“What was that? What did you say Sheridan?”

“I asked if you were all right? You look kind of spaced out right now,” Sheridan responded.

“Sheridan, I want you to come with me to pick out the ring. I want to learn your taste in everything. We might as well start here. Just remember that I'm a Lopez-Fitzgerald, not a Crane, so the Hope Diamond is out.”

“Luis!” Sheridan said somewhat hurt, “I thought you knew me better than that.”

“Sheridan, I'm sorry. I do know you better than that. I apologize from the bottom of my heart. I'll try to refrain from those remarks, o.k.” Luis was genuinely sorry. He was trying to turn it into a joke and it had backfired miserably.

“Good,” she said. She then added. “And I'll remember to do the same thing when the Cranes are serving the Lopez-Fitzgerald's.” She was smiling mischievously at Luis.

“Why you...” Luis grinned broadly as he shook his head. She was playing with him the whole time.

“Listen, I'm going to order us a bottle of champagne to celebrate. What do you say?” Luis asked with a sexy smile.

“I'd say that's a great idea,” Sheridan agreed happily. Luis gave Sheridan a full kiss on the mouth and left their suite to order the champagne.

Luis walked into the command center to find Hal sitting at his desk. He looked like he was getting ready to call it a night.

“Luis,” Hal said looking up in surprise. “What are you doing here? I would have thought you and Sheridan would have... been asleep long ago.”

“I came in here to order a bottle of champagne and I have a favor to ask,” Luis said with a huge grin.

Hal's curiosity was peaked. “You want to order a bottle of champagne? And you need a favor? Whatever is on your mind officer?”

“I can't tell you. Not yet anyway.” Luis was dying inside to be able to tell someone, but he wasn't ready. Not quite yet.

“O.K.” Hal said with a suspicious grin. “But judging by the look on your face I'll bet it's good news.”

“You bet it's good news,” Luis said. “It's the best news.”

Hal had a feeling he knew what it was, but didn't want to spoil it for Luis. “Order your champagne Luis. Then tell me what the favor is.”

Luis ordered a bottle of the best champagne the hotel carried and then explained to Hal what he needed for him to do.

“At this hour Luis?” Hal asked when Luis had finished explaining the situation to Hal.

“Yes at this hour. She won't mind at all. An agent can be there and back with it in less than 20 minutes,” Luis said firmly.

“O.K. Luis. Whatever you say.” Hal gave Luis a raised brow and a knowing look. He picked up the phone and dialed a number.

Luis returned for a moment to tell Sheridan he'd ordered the champagne and would wait for it with Hal. Sheridan acknowledged him and told him she'd be getting dressed.

Twenty minutes later, the courier agent returned with Luis' special request. The champagne had already arrived. Luis gathered his special package, his champagne bucket and glasses, thanked Hal and the other agent and returned to his suite.

Luis returned to find the room darkened except for a few dim lights. He followed the path to the bedroom and found that room with the same dim lights. Soft music was playing in the background and lying on the bed was the most beautiful site Luis had ever seen. Sheridan lay on her side, propped up by her elbow, her cheek resting in her hand. Her towel had been exchanged for a very tiny pale pink teddy. Every curve of her body was accentuated as Luis surveyed every inch of her magnificent figure. His eyes finally worked their way up her body and met with hers. Her face glowed, her eyes glittered in the dim light. Luis saw a fire behind those blue eyes that took his breath away.

“Hey you,” Luis said in a soft sexy voice. The grin on his face and his roving eyes made Sheridan blush.

“Hey yourself,” she said with a devilish grin. “I've been waiting for you.” She raised a brow and gave him a very sultry look.

“I can see that,” Luis said as he continued to admire her beauty. “Champagne?” He asked holding up the bottle for her to see. “I seem to recall we have something to celebrate?”

“We do, huh?”

“Yeah, we do. Like maybe the fact that you're now my fiancée?” Luis couldn't keep a straight face. His excitement shone brightly on his face.

”Say it again Luis,” Sheridan implored. “I love the sound of that word.”

“What word?” Luis asked jokingly. “OH! You mean fiancée?”

Sheridan's eyes sparkled. “Pour the champagne Luis. I'll toast that!”

Luis poured the two glasses of champagne. Sheridan was now sitting up in bed near the edge so she could make a toast with Luis. Once the glasses were poured, Luis put the bottle on the nightstand and joined Sheridan sitting on the bed. “Here's to our future together as husband and wife.” Luis couldn't keep his eyes off Sheridan's as he gently raised his glass to meet hers.

Sheridan flashed him a shy smile as she touched her glass to his. “I'll drink to that” she said. They each took a slow sip from their glass, still never losing eye contact with each other.
Luis suddenly remembered the surprise he'd sent the agent to retrieve. “I almost forgot,” he said with a nervous laugh. I have something for you.”

“Luis!” Sheridan protested, “That's not fair! How did you manage to get me something when we really can't leave here? If I'd known...”

“Sheridan,” Luis interrupted her, “I didn't buy you anything. You said something tonight that reminded me I had something of yours. Something you lost in Paris.” He pulled out an object wrapped in tissue paper from his pocket and handed it to Sheridan.

Sheridan was wide eyed and her mouth hung open in shock. She carefully unwrapped the paper and there was her compact. The most precious gift she'd ever received. She was heartbroken when she'd lost it. Tears filled her eyes. “Luis... How?... Where?... Where did you find it?”

“On the floor at Jean-Luc's cottage. It must have fallen out of your purse when Roger and Pierre dragged you out of there. Believe it or not, it was that compact that saved your life. It was the first clue I found that you'd been there. I shoved it in my pocket and forgot about it. I never gave it a second thought until you mentioned it tonight.”

“Oh Luis, Thank you so much! You don't know how much this means to me.” Sheridan wrapped her free arm around his neck and gave him a quick but very passionate kiss.

“You're welcome,” he grinned.

Sheridan held the compact in her hands for several minutes and smiled. She remembered as if it were yesterday the day Luis gave it to her. She'd never been more touched. Sheridan got up and walked over to her purse, carefully placing the compact in it. “I'm never losing this again,” she said glancing at Luis. “Thank you again.”

“My pleasure,” he said as he admired her shapely form walk towards him.

“So Luis,” Sheridan said in a low voice, “What else can we do tonight to celebrate our engagement?” Sheridan wore an enticing smile as she slowly ran her finger down the buttons of his shirt. “You're a little overdressed for what I had in mind.”

“Really?” Luis said with a playful smile. “Do you have any suggestions how we can change that?”
“I have an idea or two,” she said as she very slowly began to unbutton his shirt. She made sure her nail raked over his chest in each new area of his chest she exposed. Luis gulped the remaining champagne in his glass and placed it down. He returned his full attention to Sheridan, who was having quite an effect on him at the moment.

Luis felt a shiver run up his spine each time she managed to open another button. When she had the shirt completely undone, she placed both hands on his chest and caressed it, pulling it off his shoulders in the process. Luis felt his heart beat rapidly at her smooth touch. He felt heat course through his body. He closed his eyes momentarily as he enjoyed the sensation of Sheridan's sensual touch of his upper body.

“You know Sheridan,” Luis said with an impish grin, if you keep this up, you'll be the one overdressed.

“Well, we can't have that now can we?” She asked with a seductive look. She lowered her hands to his waist and circled it with two fingers, letting them rest on the button, which she quickly popped open. Sheridan looked Luis in the eyes and grabbed his hand pulling him to his feet. “I just need to even the playing field first,” she said. She returned her attention to his waist and slowly unzipped his pants. Luis helped her pull his pants off, leaving him in his boxers. “Now we're even,” she grinned.

Luis placed his hands on her shoulders. She caught her breath as his strong hands caressed her neck and shoulders. She looked in Luis' eyes and saw his desire for her, which only fueled her own passion for him. Sheridan laced her hands behind Luis' head and pulled him into a hot kiss. Luis responded hungrily. He longed to deepen their kiss. Sheridan sensed this and parted her lips slightly. Luis didn't waste a second as he urgently intensified the kiss. Sheridan moaned in pleasure. Both were quickly becoming lost in the moment.

Luis slid his hands under the thin straps of her teddy and slowly slid it down her arms. The garment fell to her waist, exposing her upper body to him. Luis let out an excited gasp as he gazed at her firm perfectly formed breasts. Luis smiled in appreciation of her beauty. Sheridan blushed slightly.

“Sheridan, are you blushing?” Luis asked very softly as his eyes found hers. This only caused her cheeks to become pinker still. “Sweetie, there's no reason to blush. “You are absolutely beautiful. You are the most breathtakingly gorgeous woman I've ever seen and you'd better get used to hearing it. I intend to remind my fiancée of that on a regular basis.” Luis reached out and pulled her close to him. Their bare chests pressed against each other causing both of them to catch their breath.

“It's not that Luis, so much as it is that this still feels like a dream. This is all too good to be true,” she said in a halting voice. Luis was trailing kisses down her neck and it was driving her wild.
“This isn't a dream Sheridan,” Luis said as he continued to kiss his way towards her breasts. “This is heaven.” Luis reached his destination and took her breast in his mouth.

Sheridan threw her head back in delight. She wrapped her hands around his head, holding him closer still. “Oh God Luis!” She whispered gutturally as she felt her body respond excitedly to his action. Luis backed up to the bed and sat down pulling Sheridan on top of him until the two fell backwards. Luis didn't miss a beat. As he explored her breasts with his mouth, his hands explored other areas of her body. His hands slid down her sides and he slickly removed her remaining garment, letting it fall to the floor.

Sheridan's body was completely on fire. Luis made her feel like no one had ever made her feel before. She reveled in the sensation. She lowered her head, kissing the top of his. She placed her hands on his face and pulled it back to hers. She placed her mouth on his in a desperate kiss. Luis responded with an unparalleled passion that caused Sheridan to moan loudly. He rolled them both over in a quick move, so he was now on top. Sheridan ran her hands lightly over Luis' back until they reached the waistband of his shorts. She played with it for a minute and then slowly began pulling them down, which only caused the raging inferno within Luis to grow hotter. He pulled back from their kiss and caught her gaze.

“I love you,” he whispered out of breath.

“I love you too Luis,” she smiled, then returned her mouth to his.

Luis and Sheridan continued to make love. They spent a good part of the night learning new ways to please each other and enjoying being pleased. They spent the night in that special place that was just for them.

Sheridan, Luis, Hal, Andrea and Mitch spent most of the next day going over the plans for that night. Martin was there as a spectator. Luis' involvement in the actual sting would end in the hotel restaurant. He and Mitch would switch places. Hal told Luis he had a special project he needed help with once he left the dining room. It was agreed that Sheridan would run off to the Crane mansion in search of Ethan after she witnessed the scene with Mitch and Andrea. Julian had supplied Mitch with a small camera to sneak into the suite. Mitch assured Julian that Luis wouldn't be suspected of bringing in a camera. Alistair wanted to see Sheridan's reaction for himself at the moment it happened. He wanted her crushed.

It was agreed that Sheridan would stay with Ethan until she heard the police sirens approach. Sheridan would call police headquarters from Ethan's room fifteen minutes after she got there. That would give Mitch time to get to the Crane Estate. Julian and hopefully Alistair would be in a meeting with Mitch. Mitch would tell Julian and Alistair he knocked Luis out and after he took Sheridan to her room, he brought his body to the pier and dumped him in. (If they asked, of course.) Sheridan was also to briefly encounter Julian when she arrived at the mansion. She would show him briefly her anguish before looking for Ethan.

Sheridan was becoming very nervous. She kept glancing at Luis, who gave her reassuring looks. “Remember,” he said, “You're in a play. You are all acting.”

“Right,” she smiled anxiously. “A play. But what if something goes wrong Luis? My father wants you dead. I don't think I could bear to lose you. I know I couldn't bear to lose you. It would kill me.”
“If you think you can get rid of me this easily, you're crazy,” Luis replied with a mischievous grin. Look how many times we've been in dangerous situations before, without the watchful eye of the FBI I might add and nothing happened to us. What makes you think something is going to happen this time?”

“Nothing really, it's just that you won't be there with me. This time I'll be on opposite sides from you,” she said sadly.

“It won't be me Sheridan. Remember that. It won't be me. It's an actor who just looks like me. I'll be at the mansion as soon as Hal gives the word. Don't you worry about that. We'll face your family together.” Luis gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead as he continued to try and calm her.

Luis and Sheridan sat at their table in the hotel dining room. It was the first time since staying in the hotel that either of them had been out in public. Sheridan barely touched her food as her nerves were acting up in a big way. The time had come for the switch. Luis gave Sheridan a very passionate kiss before he left for the restroom. “What do you say the next time I see you we think about setting a date?” These were Luis' parting words. He winked at her and turned to leave.
Sheridan's heart leapt. She smiled as she thought about her future as Mrs. Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald. `If only I can get through tonight,' she thought, `My life will be perfect.'

Sheridan was shaken from her reverie when she saw `Luis' return. She felt her body tighten and a sick feeling develop in the pit of her stomach. `Here we go,' she thought. `It's happening.'

“Luis” sat down at the table. He smiled at Sheridan. “I suggest we have dessert,” he said. “We still have some time to kill.”

Sheridan gave him a very weak smile and nodded in agreement. She had several encounters with Mitch this week, but this was her first encounter with him in the Luis mask. As with her previous encounter, this man looked and sounded just like Luis. She had to constantly remind herself it wasn't Luis.

Mitch did what he could to make Sheridan as comfortable as possible. He was actually enjoying himself. The idea of working for the Feds and the Cranes at the same time was very exciting to him, though not quite as profitable. He was very much looking forward to the showdown that would occur later that evening.

When Luis left the restroom, he was planning on returning to his suite. Instead he was whisked away by several men he hoped were FBI. He was brought to a room in the hotel and breathed a sigh of relief when he realized it was his father's room. “You guys had me wondering there for a minute,” he said with a relieved chuckle. “What's going on? Why all the secrecy?”

Hank threw Luis a pile of clothes. Here. Put these on Luis. I told you I had something I needed help with. This is it.”

Luis' curiosity was up and so was his suspicion. He suddenly had the feeling he'd been kept in the dark about a major part of tonight's sting operation. Luis stared after his father and Hal, noticing his father was wearing work clothes. He left for the bathroom to change his clothes. Somehow he had the feeling that there was more to this sting than he knew about.

A few minutes later Luis returned wearing a pair of khaki pants, a tight fitting black t-shirt and a worn brown leather jacket. Hal fought back a grin. Luis looked just as he had when he first met him, minus one thing. He turned around and picked up a hat from the chair. He handed it to Luis. “Here Luis. I think you're missing this.”

Luis took the hat and looked Hal square in the eye. “O.K. What's going on here, really?” Luis asked suspiciously. He plopped the hat on his head and Martin couldn't help but to smile.
“Luis, you finally did it,” Martin said with his killer grin.

“What are you talking about Pop?” Luis asked with a frown. He had a feeling he knew, but he was praying his father wouldn't embarrass him like that.

“When you were a little boy all you ever talked about was growing up to be Indiana Jones. I remember for your tenth birthday everything you got was related to Indiana Jones. You had sheets and a comforter, curtains, a lunchbox...”

“Pop please don't....” His father cut off Luis. His cheeks were becoming redder by the second. `Thank God Sheridan isn't here,' he thought.

“And who could ever forget the official Indiana Jones hat and bullwhip. You should have seen him Hal. He was quite the fan,” Martin looked at Luis and saw how red his face was and was quite amused by it.

Hal just stood there and shook his head. “This explains a lot Luis. You never told me you'd been practicing all those stunts of your since your childhood!”

“Ha! Ha! Ha! Luis retorted in total frustration. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been that embarrassed. He had to smile inwardly. He'd forgotten how his father enjoyed doing that to the kids. As hard as it was to take the ribbing, he was happy, because it meant so much that it was his father doing the kidding.

“So, besides the two of you getting your laugh of the day, why am I dressed like this?” Luis asked seriously.

“A couple of reasons Luis,” Hal said in an official tone. First reason is you need some practical clothes for where you are going. Second reason, we don't want you readily recognized by the Cranes, since you'll be on their property tonight. The hat will help hide your features in case you get spotted by anyone. And thirdly, I have a feeling that Sheridan is going to be greatly disturbed by what she sees. I know she knows it's all an act, but she's been through so much lately, I thought if she saw you dressed like that, it might help her back to reality quicker. She seemed to really respond to you when you were dressed like that, even before you straightened out all your differences.”

Luis was very concerned now about Sheridan. He hadn't liked her reaction yesterday when she realized what she had to witness, but she'd come out of it just fine. He did everything he could think of to convince her he'd be waiting for her when it was all over and it wouldn't be him with Beth. Heck, it wasn't even going to be Beth. He did manage a grin, however, when he pictured Sheridan's reaction to him wearing these clothes. He knew she was turned on when he looked like this and that thought alone made it worth while wearing these clothes.

“”All right Hal. Let's go,” Luis said anxious to get started on whatever he was about to do.

“Aren't you curious about what you'll be doing?” Hal questioned.

“Of course I'm curious,” Luis said with a hint of anger. “I've been trying to get you to tell me since I got here.”

“You are going to break into Sheridan's cottage,” Hal said with his normal stone face
.
“Luis had a strange look on his face. “What kind of a joke is this?” He asked. He personally watched her cottage blow up. Hal was either playing some sort of sick game or had lost his mind.

“No joke Luis,” Hal said. “You and your father are going to break into a secret vault that's buried within the rubble of Sheridan's cottage.”

“And how are we supposed to find this vault?” Luis asked with both curiosity and suspicion. How do you even know there's a vault in there? I spent over a week in that cottage and never saw anything that remotely resembled a vault. Sheridan must not have known about it either or surely she would have told me, especially the night we had to climb up the chimney to escape.”

“There is one person still alive that knows exactly where the vault is. He accidentally saw it being opened one day years ago. Unfortunately the Crane thugs captured him. They shot him and left him for dead in the woods, but he survived. To my knowledge, the Cranes believe he is dead,” Hal said.

“Did he tell you where this vault is?” Luis asked, excitement now in his voice. And what is supposed to be in the vault?”

“If we're right, all of the Crane's skeletons are buried in there, and no, the man refused to tell us,” Hal admitted.

“Have your agents found the vault? Luis asked. Surely they must have found something! From what I hear, the cottage was reduced to rubble.”

“Unfortunately, my agents have found nothing.”

“And you expect my father and I to find it when dozens of trained experts can't?” Luis asked again getting slightly perturbed.

“Because the person who knows the location of the vault has agreed to open it. Only with you and Martin.

“Luis was confused. “Why? Who is this person?”
Just as Luis said this, a figure emerged from the other room.....









                              CHAPTER 23

Luis just stared at the man who appeared in the room. Shock was written all over his face as his eyes nearly popped out of his head and his mouth was on the floor.

“What, no “Hi” for your big brother? I thought you would have been happier than this to see me Luis. It has been awhile.” Antonio Lopez-Fitzgerald stood in front of his younger brother who was still completely shocked. Antonio was a very handsome man in his early 30's with dark hair, dark eyes and very well built. He did indeed look like his brother Luis. Tony's eyes were much darker than Luis' though. He also had several small scars on his face. They surprised Luis because he never remembered them when he was a child.

“Oh my God, Antonio!” Luis exclaimed. He wrapped his arms around his brother in a tight embrace. Antonio backed up a little and smiled at his brother. “Damn, you're taller than I am now. I guess I can't call you “little” brother anymore. “I had a feeling you were going to shoot up Indy.”

Luis rolled his eyes. “Don't you start too Antonio,” Luis scowled. “Pop just embarrassed the living daylights out of me in front of Hal here.” Martin just grinned at Luis. He knew Luis was really enjoying every minute of it. Somewhere along the line Luis had lost his sense of humor and Martin was determined to bring it back.

“Luis, I wasn't trying to start anything. Don't you remember we all used to call you Indy? You went nuts when that movie came out. You had everything, sheets...” Antonio was interrupted.

“Look Tone, we already had the laundry list. Yeah, I do remember.” Luis admitted. “Until recently I seemed to have blocked out most of my memories of my childhood. I didn't remember we lived in the cottage until a few weeks ago. And that was my first memory, so forgive me if I'm a little slow here.”

“I'd love to let you guys get reacquainted, but we have a job to do and we are under a tight time frame. We need to get going now,” Hal told them.

“I understand Luis said. He smiled at his brother letting him know he was indeed pleased to see him. They were all going to have a lot of catching up to do.

Antonio grabbed a hat that looked very similar to the one that Luis was wearing and gave his brother a huge grin. Luis chuckled at Antonio and watched as Martin put on a pair of dark glasses. The four men left the hotel room under heavy FBI escort and headed towards the Crane Estate.

Sheridan and “Luis” entered the command center on their way back from dinner. Sam was there waiting for them along with several other agents. Sheridan noticed there seemed to be many fewer agents present than was normal for this time of night. “Luis” brought Sheridan to the door of her suite.

“Give me 30 minutes,” he said. “Remember the door will be unlocked.”

“Fine,” she said with a small smile. She watched as Sam gave “Luis” last minute instructions and then he disappeared into his suite. “Thank God they're using his suite and not the one Luis and I share,” she muttered under her breath. Sheridan was about to go into her suite and wait when Sam approached her.

“Sheridan are you all right?” Sam asked with concern.

“I'm trying Sam,” she confessed. “I really am.”

“Just remember this is all an act. It's not Luis and it's not Beth.”

“I know Sam. I keep telling myself that.”

“I also know something else Sheridan,” Sam said with a twinkle in his eyes. “Luis loves you very much. I've known it longer than he has and he would never do anything to hurt you. I've never seen a man go to such lengths in order to prevent the woman they love from getting hurt. The love Luis feels for you is very rare Sheridan. I hope you know that.”

Sheridan gave Sam a genuine smile. “Thanks Sam. I know that and I feel the same way about him. It's what I've dreamt about my whole life and I never thought I'd find it. Luis makes me feel like no one else ever could.”

“Well you just remember that tonight then. After this is all over, you and Luis will be free to live the life you deserve. One filled with complete happiness and no interference from your family.”

“I hope so Sam.”

“I know so Sheridan.”

Mitch was organizing his room. He placed the small camera he'd “smuggled” in, in such a position that it would capture the view of him and “Beth” in bed together as well as be able to see Sheridan's reaction at the door. Mitch shook his head at the thought of Alistair Crane wanting to see for himself the reaction of his daughter when she discovered the man she loved in bed with another woman. Not only that, but telling her his plans for killing her and collecting the insurance money. `What a sick bastard,' he thought.

Mitch knew he wasn't exactly the most upstanding citizen in the world, but he would never do to someone he “loved” what Alistair Crane planned to do to his daughter. `What kind of a man would do that to his own daughter?' he thought. From everything he'd learned about the Crane family in the last few days, he was very glad he was working for the FBI now. He hadn't realized before how evil they really were. `Just as well I didn't know before,' he thought.

Mitch laid his clothes out so he would be able to put them on quickly when he needed. He would have to follow Sheridan closely to the Crane mansion. He had to make it look as if he were following her to explain things to her. `Things will definitely be interesting tonight,' he thought laughing to himself.
Mitch looked at his watch and realized there were only five minutes till show time. “Oh “Beth”! It's time to get ready,” he called.
“Beth” emerged from the bathroom wearing a black-laced short nightgown. She smiled at “Luis.”

The car arrived at the cottage and Hal parked it in a predetermined spot, out of the view from any cameras hidden in the brush. The foursome emerged form the car and Hal signaled another agent he could begin. Martin and Antonio watched with interest and finally Hal was given the go ahead.


“What was that all about?” Martin asked curiously.
“Speed Papa, The need for speed.” Luis said grinning at his father.

Martin gave Luis a confused look. Luis laughed. “I'll explain it later.”

“We've tapped into the Cranes security cameras. We've inserted a tape to play, so anyone who happens to be monitoring the cameras won't see us here.” Hal explained.

“Ingenious,” Martin said impressed.

“Come on guys,” Antonio shouted over his shoulder as he made his way to the location of the cottage. “Get the lead out.”

Luis and Martin followed Antonio as he walked through the rubble that was once a beautiful 19th century cottage. Hal brought up the rear. Luis felt an air of excitement as he was about to find the Cranes deepest kept secrets hidden somewhere within Sheridan's cottage. Not only was he excited about what this quest would reveal, but also here he was with his brother and father. `My brother and father,' he thought smiling. Luis still felt as if it were all a dream. Sure some of the revelations of the last few days had been heartbreaking, but he now had his family back. The two people his mother had lit candles for since the day they disappeared were finally home. He couldn't wait to see his mother blow those candles out for the last time. He couldn't wait to see the reaction on his mother's face when she saw her husband and oldest child walk through the door. He felt his eyes mist as he imagined what it would be like.

“Hey Indy, you all right back there?” Antonio asked with a knowing look.

“Fine Tone,” Luis responded. “Just take us to the vault will you?” Luis pulled his hat down slightly. Even though it was pretty dark outside, he was afraid someone might see his face right now and he had no intention of giving them anything else to kid him about.

Luis continued to follow and his thoughts one again returned to the events of the last few days. This time his focus was on Sheridan. He smiled to himself as he remembered their night of passionate lovemaking. He felt a warm sensation fill his body just thinking about it. `Man that woman does something to me I never dreamed possible,' he thought. `I'll never get enough of her.' His thoughts drifted to what was going to happen tonight. He really wished he could be there for her, but understood why he couldn't. Sam had promised to look out for her. `It will all be over soon Sheridan,' he thought. `Remember I love you.' Luis was shaken from his reverie when Antonio stopped in front of the huge stone fireplace that was once in the living room of Sheridan's cottage. Now it was the only thing within the house that still stood.

“Hal, we're going to need some shovels to start with,” Antonio requested.

Hal motioned for someone to get them some shovels. “Antonio, we've already checked out this fireplace,” Hal said with a quizzical look.

“Have you now?” Antonio asked with a friendly smile.

“Let's get this debris out of the hearth for starters,” Antonio directed his family as they were handed the shovels. The three of them removed the remaining debris from the hearth as Hal watched with interest. It didn't take long at all with the three of them working as a team. Hal was silently pleased as he watched the father and sons working side by side for a common goal. He knew this was something Martin had dreamed of for many years.

“Now what?” Luis asked when the hearth was emptied.

“I'll be right back,” Antonio said with a childish grin. Antonio stuck his head in the chimney. Luis could tell he was reaching for something. Luis got a look on his face and it suddenly dawned on him exactly what his brother was looking for. He had noticed it the night he and Sheridan had climbed up the chimney.

“Damn,” he said quietly. “I should have figured that out.”

“Figured what out?” Martin asked.

Luis didn't have time to answer. A trap door began to slide open at the base of the hearth. Hal, Martin and Luis stood their with their eyes wide open as they watched the floor of the fireplace disappear and a huge hole in the ground underneath. Antonio pulled himself down, careful not to fall since there was no bottom anymore.

“Voila!” He said with a familial smile.

“I'll be damned,” Hal said shaking his head.

“Who goes first?” Antonio asked. “Since I found it I think it should be ME!”

“By all means,” Hal said gesturing for him to go.

“Any lights Hal?” He asked. It's hard to see down there.”

Hal retrieved several flashlights. Antonio took one of the flashlights and aimed it into the darkened entrance revealing a narrow staircase.

Julian Crane walked around his office with a Cheshire grin on his face. He opened a cabinet on the wall revealing a big screen TV. He poured himself a large glass of brandy and walked over to the couch to sit down. On the small coffee table in front of him was a huge bowl of popcorn and Julian grabbed a handful and began munching. He grabbed the remote control from the table and turned the TV on.

Julian leaned back to watch the show. On the screen in front of him were “Luis” and “Beth” in bed in a very compromising situation. “ Julian smiled as he shoved more popcorn in his mouth and washed it down with a large gulp of brandy.

“JULIAN!” a voice bellowed behind him causing Julian to spill some popcorn in his lap. “What the hell do you think you're doing?” Julian with a shocked face turned around to face his father.
“Father!” Julian exclaimed with a nervous laugh. “I'm surprised to see you here. I thought you'd be watching this... wherever it is you watch these things.”

“Well you thought wrong Julian,” Alistair sneered. “Tonight is too important to the future of the Crane Empire for me to be elsewhere. This isn't a peep show Julian. The only reason I wanted this viewed is to make sure your sister is crushed! She MUST believe this is real. As of right now she is convinced this man is an impostor. I want to see with my own eyes that she believes it's real. If not we're in trouble.”

“Yes Father,” Julian acknowledged. He took another large drink of his brandy.

“And put that damned glass down. I need you sober tonight. This mansion will be crawling with police when Sheridan gets here.”

Julian obediently placed the glass down. “Yes Father he said glumly. Julian continued to stare at his glass of brandy wondering how he could sneak a sip without his father knowing.

“This is it Julian. The door is opening...”

Sheridan knew it was show time. She rubbed her palms together to try to hide her nervousness. “This isn't real. This isn't real,” she mumbled to herself. Slowly she opened the door, making sure Mitch and Beth heard it. She walked inside and froze as she watched “Luis kissing “Beth.” She closed her eyes and told herself `This isn't real.' She opened them and their faces were apart. She then listened intently as “Luis” began his confession to “Beth“...





CHAPTER 24

Sheridan stood completely still. Beth lay wrapped in Luis` arms as she kissed his bare chest. “Oh Luis, do you know how long I've waited for this night?” Beth said dreamily.

“It was only a matter of time Beth,” Luis said. “You're the only one I ever loved. It just took me a little longer to realize it. I'm so glad you understand about Sheridan.”

“You really had me going there for awhile,” she said massaging his torso. “I almost gave up any hope of ever getting you back.”

Luis gave Beth a passionate kiss. “It was all an act Beth. I needed for my family and friends to believe it. Otherwise it would never have worked. As it is, after Sheridan overheard me talking on the wharf that night, it took me months to get her to a point where she trusted me again.”
“Luis, forgive me for asking this, but do you have any feelings for Sheridan?” She asked.

“Feelings for a Sheridan? Feelings for a Crane?” Luis laughed almost evilly. “Beth, I thought you knew me better than that? You were there when my father disappeared, remember? You know as well as I do, those bastards are responsible for his disappearance. Remember the hell my mother went through? Remember the sadness that totally took over her being that night when Papa didn't come home from work? Well I haven't forgotten. I'll never forget it.”

“But you said Sheridan was different.”

“Beth, look. I had some fun with her for awhile, but I never lost sight of my goal. My goal was and still is to make sure the Cranes suffer the way they made my family suffer. And spending these last months with her has been anything but fun. Let me tell you, her true Crane nature came through. I never really had anything against her personally until she had me arrested. She picked the wrong person to play her high and mighty games with, Beth. I now plan on making her suffer. She thought men used her in the past? Ha! She hasn't seen anything yet.”

Sheridan looked on, tears streaming down her face. She couldn't believe what she was watching. Luis telling Beth... `Sheridan get a hold of yourself. This isn't real. This isn't real. It's just an act. She kept telling herself this, but it didn't stop the tears from streaming down her face, not did it remove the look of inexplicit able horror on her face.

Julian sat on the couch with a pleased grin on his face. Alistair watched as he stood behind the couch with his arms folded in front of him.

“Father, this is simply delicious,” Julian said practically squealing with delight. Do you see the look on Sheridan's face? She is absolutely devastated.

Alistair nodded his head in agreement. “Yes Julian. I must concur with you assessment of the situation. Sheridan does seem to be gravely disturbed by what she's watching.”

“Well why shouldn't she be?” Julian asked in amusement. “After all her comic book hero has fallen. This will be the last adventure of her Super Cop Luis. Poor Sheridan. Watch my dear. Watch your hero as he confesses everything to Beth.” Julian laughed as he watched his sister's expression.

“Julian, you'd better get over your good mood before your sister gets here. She's going to need all the support we can give her. And keep your mouth shut for once. Don't give it away that we know what's happened. I don't want anything to ruin this plan. Now be quiet so I can watch the rest of it.

“Yes Father,” Julian agreed as he wiped the smile from his face. He turned his attention back to the big screen TV.

Who goes first?” Antonio asked. “Since I found it I think it should be ME!”

“By all means,” Hal said gesturing for him to go.

“Any lights Hal?” He asked. It's hard to see down there.”

Hal retrieved several flashlights. Antonio took one of the flashlights and aimed it into the darkened entrance revealing a narrow staircase.

Antonio carefully climbed down the staircase that led into a steel vault beneath the Crane cottage. It was completely dark in there except for the small ray of light that came from Antonio's flashlight. Though it appeared the vault had remained sealed for several years, everything in it appeared neat and orderly.

Luis followed closely, then Martin and Hal. Each of them with a flashlight in hand, Antonio saw a switch on the wall and decided to try it. Immediately the room filled with fluorescent lighting. “I'll be damned,” Hal exclaimed.

The foursome scanned the room for a moment. There were rows and rows of bookcases that reminded him of a library. There was also a large desk with several folders on top of it and a doorway to another room. Luis walked over to examine the bookcases more thoroughly, while Martin walked over to the desk. Antonio and Hal both went towards the door.

“These aren't books Luis said, they're videotapes,” he announced excitedly. He ran his hand along one of the tapes and read the title. Snow White Does the Seven Dwarfs. Now there's a title for you.” The three men glanced at Luis and rolled their eyes. They were thinking the same thing. What a pervert Alistair Crane was.

Martin sat behind the desk and read through the folders. He then opened the desk drawer only to find more files inside. He pulled out several and glanced through them. The excitement in his eyes was apparent as he read the files.

Surprisingly the door was unlocked. Antonio flashed his light into the dark room and he and Hal gasped at the same time. “Luis! Pop! Over here!” Antonio yelled. Luis and Martin hurried to the other room and the four of them looked wide eyes at what they saw.

“What are you planning Luis?” She asked.

“I don't think I should tell you Beth. I don't want to make you an accomplice.”

“Accomplice? What are you planning Luis?”

“An eye for an eye Beth. The Cranes took my father from me and I'm going to take Sheridan from them. And make a profit in the process. It will make up for everything my family has had to endure in these past years.”

“Luis this doesn't sound like you. What's happened to you?”

“What's happened to me Beth? You really want to know?”

“Yes Luis, I do want to know.”

“That family. The Cranes. They have consistently ruined the lives of most of the good people in Harmony. I've had to give up everything I've ever wanted in my life because of them. Everything Beth. I wanted to be with you so much back then, but I couldn't do it. I had to be the one to take care of the family. Antonio ran off. He couldn't handle it.”

“But Luis, you always said it never bothered you to give that up? You were more focused on your family than anything else.”

“Well I lied Beth,” Luis said angrily. “Yes, I felt responsible for taking care of my family, but that doesn't mean I liked it. As a matter of fact the resentment in me has been building for 10 years. Beth, I gave up three different scholarships. Full rides! For what? The Cranes are responsible for my father's disappearance and in the process of that ruined my life. And Sheridan? Ha! She's the worst of the lot. I've got big plans for her. Big plans.”

“Like what?” Beth asked.

“I'm going to ask her to marry me Beth,” Luis laughed. “And unfortunately it will be a very short marriage. “You see, those drug dealers will get to her. I've seen to it myself. And when she's dead, I'll be rich. I have a huge insurance policy I'll be taking out on her as soon as we're married. Once it's in effect, I make one little phone call and it will be all over for the spoiled princess. My life will be rid of her for good and I'll have enough money, Mama will never have to work for that family again.”

Sheridan couldn't take anymore. Tears were flooding down her face and she let out a slight gasp. She covered her mouth quickly and stayed in the doorway long enough for “Luis” to turn his head and watch her. She quickly ran from the door.

“Sheridan!” He shouted after her. He jumped out of bed and threw on his clothes to follow.

“Bravo! Bravo!” Julian shouted. His clapping was deafening. “Oh father, this man is good! Did you see the look on Sheridan's face when she heard him? That poor girl will be scarred for years!”

“Yes, he did seem very convincing” Alistair nodded his head in approval. “Too bad for Sheridan. She never listens, that girl. I wonder about her sometimes. Why she insists on making me do things the hard way, I'll never know. Now Julian, you know what we have to do now?”

“Of course Father,” Julian said arrogantly. “I can handle my poor dear sister.”

“That'll be a first.”

“Really father, Sheridan's emotions are her downfall. She'll be putty in our hands.”

“I agree Julian. She will be quite emotional over this. She'll believe that she's been taken in again by the same man. I'm not quite sure how she will react. She's never gone back to a man that's used her before.”

Julian snuck a drink of his brandy while his father was contemplating Sheridan's situation. “Julian get this mess cleaned up. We don't want your sister to suspect anything. And get rid of that glass!”

“Father, if I get rid of the glass Sheridan will be suspicious,” Julian pointed out.

“Yes, I suppose you're right,” Alistair reluctantly agreed. “Just don't drink it then.”

“Of course not Father,” Julian said trying to hide his smile.

Julian closed the wall back up hiding the television and called for a servant to take away the popcorn.

“Oh my!” Martin exclaimed. “This is the last place I would have expected to find a casket. But then again, knowing the Cranes I'm not surprised.”

“Who do you suppose it is?” Luis asked.

“If I had to wager a guess, I'd say it's Stan. I guess the only way to find out for sure would be through dental records,” Martin replied.

“We'll find out soon enough,” Hal said. “Martin did you find anything in those folders?”

“I'll say I did Hal,” Martin said excitedly. “The desk drawer is filled with folders on all the girls. Resumes if you will. Photos, personal history as well as films they've starred in and handwritten note as to disposition etc.”

Antonio looked on with a smug smile on his face. He propped himself against the wall and listened happily to his father and Hal. From what he could see they now had what they needed to bring down Alistair Crane. “So when do we take them down?” He asked with a superior grin.

“Patience Antonio,” Martin said. “Patience.”

Luis surveyed the small room they were in and had a nagging feeling there was something more to it than met the eye. The room was completely empty except for the casket and several light switches on the wall. “Why are there two light switches on the wall over there?” Luis asked pointing them out. No one had bothered to turn a light on in the room, they viewed the coffin with flashlights only.

“Good question Luis,” Martin answered. “Only one way to find out.” Martin flipped one of the switches and another light flicked into existence. He went to flip on the other switch and it didn't move. Try as he might, the lever didn't budge. “Hmm. Seems to be a dummy switch. That's rather odd.”

“Do you think maybe it's some sort of silent alarm system or something?” Antonio asked with concern.

“I doubt it,” Hal answered. “If this place were alarmed, we would have been found out long before now. I doubt the Cranes even thought they needed an alarm system down here.”

“You're right Hal,” Martin agreed as he rested his hand on the wall. “I'm sure they figured this place was well protected right where it is. No need for alarms down here. Martin lowered his hand to the switch one last time and attempted to jiggle it. Shaking his head in frustration, he just leaned into the wall and asked “What next?”

As Martin leaned against the switch, he felt his hand move and he nearly lost his balance. He looked at the switch and realized the whole panel had depressed into the wall and a narrow passageway appeared next to his hand.

“Well well,” Luis smirked. “What have we here?”

Martin grinned at Luis remembering the time when Luis was a child that he and Hank had found the secret passage in his own basement. “Since you're so fascinated with secret passages Indy, I suggest you go first,” Martin said with a sly smile.

“No problem!” Luis said happily. He flashed his light down the dark tunnel and began his trek with the others following.

Sam Bennett who had left the hotel right before Sheridan walked into Mitch's room sat in his office as he heard Mitch yell Sheridan's name. He too had a listening device planted in the room so he would know exactly when to act. Sam shook his head as he digested all the information he knew Sheridan had overheard Mitch tell Andrea and knew Sheridan would be very upset.

Impostor or not, those words must have hurt badly and he sympathized with her. He also felt for Luis who was not going to be in for an easy time of it. He prayed Sheridan would be strong enough to get over this fast, As hard as it was, she had to realize it wasn't Luis saying those things, nor was what Mitch had said any doing of Luis. It was a script orchestrated by the FBI to fit in all the pieces Alistair and Julian Crane wanted Sheridan to know.

Sam organized his men, readying them for their trip shortly to the Crane mansion. He told them nothing yet, just placed them alert. Sam knew that back at the hotel the FBI agents were doing the same thing. They too had listened to everything and knew the timeframe they were dealing with. The time was getting closer.

Tears were still streaming down Sheridan's face when she loudly swung open the door of the Crane mansion. She started ascending the large staircase when she heard a familiar voice. “Sheridan dear, how good it is to see you,” Alistair said in a hypnotizing voice.

Sheridan whipped her head around to see her father and Julian standing there. She was taken off guard slightly as she couldn't remember the last time she's actually seen her father. It had been several years at least. “Not now,” she shouted as she continued up the stairs.

“Sheridan my sweet sister, what appears to be wrong? Aren't you supposed to be guarded by that low life cop right now?” Julian asked sarcastically.

“Shut up Julian,” she shouted. “I'm looking for Ethan.”

“So sorry. He's in his room I believe,” Julian acknowledged with mocked concern. “Please let us know if we can be of assistance to you.”

“You'll be the first to know when the police arrive,” she shouted as she stormed up the stairs out of sight.

Alistair smiled for the first time. “Make your phone call Julian,” Alistair ordered. “Do it
Now.”

“Chief Bennett” Sam answered the phone.

“Ah, Chief Bennett. Just the man I wanted to talk to. This is Julian Crane. I need you and several officers to come her right away.”

Sam frowned. “What's this all about Julian?”

“I need you to come and arrest Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald for plotting to kill my sister Sheridan.”

“What?” Sam shouted in disbelief. “Luis is guarding her for the FBI at the Harmony Hotel.”

“Not so Chief. Sheridan just came rushing through here. I dare say she was frightfully upset. Who wouldn't be though given the circumstances?”

Sam didn't like what he was hearing. This isn't the way it was supposed to happen. “What proof do you have Julian?” Sam asked trying to stall a little.

”You'll have your proof Chief. Just get here and do it now.” Julian slammed the receiver in Sam's ear.

“Damn.” Sam was about to assemble his men when he had another call. “Chief Bennett here.”

“Chief Bennett, it's Ethan Crane. Sheridan asked me to call you. She's too upset right now to say anything. She just told me to tell you to get over here right away.”

“Did she say why?” Sam asked.

“No, she just said she needed you here. Something about Luis trying to kill her. It makes no sense, really.”

“On my way.” Sam heaved a sigh of relief and headed towards the Crane mansion. In the car he pulled out his cell phone and made a call.

Luis followed the long, dark, narrow passageway. The tunnel was quite old and it made Luis slightly uneasy. This tunnel was nothing like the one that led from the cemetery to his house. This one made him feel as though it would collapse at any moment. “I'm surprised the Cranes would build a tunnel this flimsy” Luis said.

“Luis, I think this tunnel is left over form the days of the Underground Railroad. Harmony was a stopping point for many of the runaway slaves.” Martin told him.

“Really?” Luis said. “I didn't realize that.”

“The Cranes stole most of the land around here from different people. The area the mansion was built on I believe was owned by TC Russell's family at one time” Martin explained.

“You're quite the historian Papa.” Luis was impressed.

“I've done a lot of research in these last 15 years. I probably know more about Harmony than most people right now.”

Luis smiled and nearly walked into the wall in front of him. He suddenly came to a dead stop. “Whoa! It's a stone wall here.”

“There must be some kind of lever or something to open a door” Antonio said. They all aimed their flashlights at the dirt walls on either side of them. There was nothing except what looked like a tree branch sticking out of one of the walls. Luis gently held the branch in his hands, realizing it was made of metal.

“This is metal,” he said excitedly. “This must be it.” Luis gently moved the branch in different directions, until he felt a pop. The stone wall in front of them slid to the side and they saw a dim light ahead of them. Luis led the way out of the passageway into a much larger space.

“Where are we?” Antonio asked.

“The basement of the Crane mansion,” Luis answered. Everyone looked at him with wondering eyes. Luis felt it. “I was down here with Sheridan once” he explained.

“Great place to take your dates Luis,” Martin said with a mischievous grin.

Luis glared at his father and shook his head, but said nothing. Hal's cell phone rang.

“Agent Freeman here.”

“Hal, it's Sam. Julian called demanding I come over and arrest Luis.”

“What?” Hal asked in surprise.

“Ethan called a few minutes later and said Sheridan asked him to call me. It seems as if she is hysterical. All he said was Sheridan wanted you here and something about Luis trying to kill her.”

“This isn't going exactly as I'd planned, but it will still work. Make sure Sheridan and Mitch are in the room with Julian. When they are let me know and we'll be there in less than a minute.”

Sam was surprised. “Where are you now?”

“I'll tell you later. Just make sure everyone is armed.” Hal hung up the phone. He looked at the men in his group. “This is it. Next ring of this phone and we move in. Luis do you know how to get to the study from here?”

“Yeah Hal. I can find it.”

“Now we wait.” Hal inhaled a sharp breath, as did the rest. This was the moment that he and Martin had been waiting for, for over 15 years.

Mitch arrived at the front door of the Crane mansion. He was led immediately to Julian's study when he came face to face with Julian and he assumed Alistair Crane. Alistair walked up to him and extended his hand. Mitch suspiciously accepted it and shook Alistair's hand.

“Well done son,” Alistair said with a faint smile.

“Thanks.” Mitch said.

“Poor Sheridan,” Julian laughed. “She's certainly a mess over what she saw.”

“I did catch a quick glance of her face,” Mitch agreed.

Alistair stared at Mitch. “The likeness is uncanny. You're very good at what you do Mitch.”

“Thanks. That Beth girl seemed to buy it too,” he laughed.

“I loved that!” Julian roared. “It just made Sheridan that much more vulnerable. How on earth did you get her to agree to it?”

“Like I said, the girl was a push over. She never got over me after we broke up. Now if you don't mind I'd like to get paid so I can get out of here before Sheridan calms down enough to call the police.”

“Of course Luis,” Julian said with a superior grin. Julian walked over to his desk slowly and sat down. He reached down and pulled a briefcase up onto his desk. Just then they heard Ethan and Sheridan yelling in the foyer. Before anyone knew it, Sam Ethan and Sheridan had descended upon the three men in Julian's office. Sheridan eyed Luis with daggers. Her face was red and tear stained.

“What the hell is going on here?” Mitch demanded to know as several other officers entered the office.

Sam carefully pushed a button on the cell phone in his pocket. He hoped no one had heard the beep.

Hal's cell phone rang once. Everyone jumped. “It's show time people!” Luis led the other three men up the staircase into the Crane mansion. In a few seconds the past that haunted so many would catch up with the present.






                              CHAPTER 25


Sheridan stared angrily at Luis  “You bastard!  You were going to kill me!  Get the drug cartel to do it for you?  One thing I never picked you for was a coward!  But I guess you are.”  Luis just stared blankly at Sheridan.  He said nothing,

“Is this true Sheridan?” Alistair asked in his hypnotizing voice.  Sheridan glared at her father but refused to answer him.  

“Sheridan, what's going on here?” Sam asked.

“HIM!” Sheridan shouted.  “He was planning on killing me.”  Sheridan pointed at Luis with hatred in her eyes.  So much hatred it was almost scary.

“See what I mean Sam, she's making no sense,” Ethan explained in total confusion.  “Surely Luis would never try to kill her.

“Chief Bennett, I demand you arrest this man right now” Julian said indignantly.  He plotted to kill my sister and he has not only used her, but he's also used the good people in Harmony as well as the Federal Government.”

“What are you talking about  Julian?”  Mitch asked in anger.

“Is there a problem here?”  Hal asked as he stepped into the room.

Julian momentarily froze as he saw the FBI agent enter but soon regained his arrogance.  “There certainly is Agent Freeman,” Julian said pompously.  “This man you think so highly of was plotting to kill my sister.  He had no intention of protecting her.  He planned to kill her.”

“Is this true?” Hal asked.  He starred at Alistair Crane whose face wore no expression. `He's a shrewd one ` Hal thought to himself.

“I heard that man telling Beth Wallace he planned to kill me” Sheridan seethed.

“I demand Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald be arrested immediately!” Julian bellowed as he pointed to Luis.

Mitch realized now that Julian never planned on paying him anything.  He was being set up as the fall guy.  “Now wait just a minute Crane” he sneered staring right at Julian.   He then shifted his gaze to Sam and Hal who were standing next to Sheridan and Ethan.  “Look, I'm not Luis.”

“Likely story,” Julian laughed.

“I'm telling you, I'm not Luis,” Mitch insisted.  

“I over heard that man right there say he planned on killing me” Sheridan screamed.  “Don't listen to him.”

“Hold on a second,” Hal interjected.  “What the hell is going on here?”

“Luis was playing me for a fool this whole time.  He made all those rescue attempts just to get me to trust him again.  I saw him.  In bed with Beth,  Beth of all people, telling her how he was going to get even with the Cranes.  An eye for an eye he said.”  The tears began streaming down Sheridan's face again.  

“You see?” Julian smirked.  “Now arrest him.”

“I'm not Luis I tell you,” Mitch insisted angrily.  “I can prove it too.”

“Well if you're not Luis then where is he?”  Hal asked curiously.  He gaze left Mitch and went to Julian and Alistair.  Julian wore a knowing smile, while Alistair's face remained expressionless.

A dark figure entered the room.  His head was covered with a Stetson, he wore a pair of khakis, black T-shirt and worn brown leather jacket.  His face was undetected as he has his gaze towards the ground.  “Luis is right here,” he said looking up for all to see his face.

Alistair's expression never changed.  Ethan looked on in complete confusion.  Sam and Hal watched Julian and his father.  Mitch looked relieved.  Luis scanned the room and then settled his gaze on Sheridan.

Sheridan looked like someone had just slapped her back into reality.  Standing just inches from her was Luis.  The Luis she knew and loved.  `It was all just an act, she reminded herself.  She looked at Mitch, then at Luis who looked hotter at that moment than he'd ever looked in his life.  She threw her hands to her mouth.  “Oh my God!  Luis!”

“What the hell is going on here?” Julian fumed.  “He's supposed to be dead!”  Julian glared at Mitch and then he realized what he'd said.  His face turned pale and then all eyes turned to Julian.  

Everyone knew what Julian meant.  Everyone that is except Ethan.  “Father, what did you mean he's supposed to be dead?”  Ethan looked at his father in horror.  

“I... I... Uh...”  Julian was stammering and couldn't come up with anything.

“I'll tell you exactly what he meant,” Mitch announced.  Mitch reached up to his face and ripped the mask off, revealing his own features.  “Julian hired me to impersonate Luis and then kill him.  He wanted Sheridan to believe that Luis was still using her and planning on killing her.  I was supposed to kill him and then take off.  Luis' body would never be recovered and Sheridan would be heartbroken.”

Ethan was in total shock.  He knew his father's business dealings weren't always above board, but he never realized he's stoop this low.   “Oh my God!  Sheridan!  I bet he was the man you saw talking on the phone that night on the wharf.  It wasn't Luis after all!”

“No Ethan, it wasn't Luis,” Sheridan answered Ethan but never took her eyes from Luis.   “I'm so sorry,” she whispered to Luis.

Ethan's shock had worn off and now he was angry.  “Father!  Why?  Why would you do such a thing?”

“I'll tell you why Ethan,” Sheridan said bitterly.  “He was afraid Luis and I would talk.  He was afraid I'd tell Luis about my nightmare.”

“Sheridan, that's ridiculous,” Ethan said tentatively.  “Why would Father care if you told Luis about your nightmare.  That's all it was.  Or was it?”

“Of course it was a nightmare,” Alistair said sternly.  It was the first time Alistair had opened his mouth.  Hal and Sam watched Alistair's expression with interest.  “Your father was just concerned about your sister's involvement with someone outside of her social class.  I must admit, I am very disappointed in Julian for going to such lengths.  This is deplorable.”

“But Father!” Julian protested angrily.  “You...”

“Shut up Julian,” Alistair bellowed.  “Haven't you caused enough trouble for one night?  Sheridan dear , I am truly sorry for the trouble and heartache your brother has caused you.  I would have much preferred you'd picked a man from the country club, but if your heart is set on Officer Lopez-Fitzgerald, then you have my blessing.”  Alistair's tone had returned to the hypnotizing tone he so often used when talking with Sheridan.

“Thank you Father,” Sheridan said sarcastically.  “It is.  As a matter of fact Luis and I are engaged.”  She smiled wickedly at her father.

“Engaged?” Alistair said weakly, trying not to choke on the words.  “Isn't this rather sudden dear?  No matter.  Congratulations to you both.”  Alistair put on his biggest smile for all to see.

Sheridan and Luis both feigned a smile in return.  Sam motioned to Quinlan who walked up to Julian.  He held a small notepad in one hand and pulled a pair of handcuffs off his belt with the other.  

“Mr. Julian Crane, you are herby arrested for conspiracy to commit the murder of Harmony Police Officer Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald.  Other charges will follow pending a further investigation.”  Quinlan grabbed Julian by one wrist and snapped a cuff on it.

“This is preposterous!  I demand you release me at once!” Julian bellowed indignantly.
Quinlan glanced at his notepad and continued.  “You have the right to remain silent.   Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”  He grabbed Julian's other wrist, pulled the two arms behind his back and again snapped the cuff.

“Father, are you going to stand for this?” Julian pleaded.  Panic was now setting in as beads of sweat appeared on his patrician brow.

“I'm sorry Julian.  There is nothing I can do for you.  You have gone too far this time.”  Alistair shook his head sadly as he loaded at his pathetic son.

You have the right to be speak to an attorney, and to have an attorney present during any questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you at government expense.”  Quinlan finished.  “Do you have any questions concerning these rights Mr. Crane?”

Julian was practically oblivious to what Officer Quinlan was saying.  He turned his attention to Sheridan.  “Sheridan, sweet Sheridan” he appealed, “I never wanted to hurt anyone.  You must believe me.  Surely you don't believe the word of this, this impostor over the word of your own brother!”

“Then how do you explain the mask Julian?”  Sheridan asked in a calm, very cold voice.  “Do you really expect me to believe that this man took it upon himself to impersonate Luis for no reason?  Get real!  You and Father hated the idea that I would go out with Luis.  You two did everything you could think of short of murder to keep us apart.   Now it appears you even tried to resort to that.”

Sheridan was livid.  all of her hurt, anger and frustration was now unleashing itself.  “And as for you Father, how could you do this to your own daughter?”

“Sheridan, I have no idea what you're talking about dear” Alistair proclaimed innocently.  

Sheridan laughed gutturally.  “Oh Father, you are good.  All these years.  all these years that I did everything I could think of to earn your love.  That's all I ever wanted from you, but I never had a chance.  I was nothing to you.  Just another possession to be manipulated.”

Sheridan, that's not true!” Alistair said with hurt in his voice.

“That's why you couldn't let me be happy, isn't it?  You never interfered in one of my relationships until I met Luis.  Jean-Luc was a drug dealer for crying out loud and you never said a word.  I was almost killed, numerous times and you never asked how I was.  all you did was berate me for my poor choices in men.  When I finally found the right man, that's when you tried to stop it.”

“I did no such thing Sheridan,” Alistair insisted.  

“The hell you didn't!” she yelled.  “I sat here and almost let you convince me not to go out with Luis when we had our first date.”

“Sheridan darling, I just didn't want to see you get hurt again.  I blamed myself for not interceding in all your other relationships before you were hurt and I was trying to prevent you any further pain.”  Alistair's voice was again hypnotizing.

“You were afraid Father,” Sheridan said, the quality of his voice no longer affecting her.  “You were afraid of Luis because he's a cop.  You were afraid of Luis because you knew he wanted answers to what happened to his father.  You didn't care one bit about me.  It was all about you.”

“Sheridan, I told you more than once, I know nothing about the disappearance of Martin Fitzgerald.  Why would I, Alistair Crane be afraid of a middle class cop?  Neither I nor anyone in this family had anything to do with his father's disappearance.”  

“I'm sorry Mr. Crane, but I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one” a voice form the hall could be heard saying.  

For the first time Alistair Crane showed emotion other than indifference or patronizing.  His face showed fear.  Even without seeing the man he knew who it was.  Julian's face was contorted into a grim smile as he watched his father's reaction.  Ethan looked at Alistair with a puzzled expression.  All eyes focused on the man as he walked into the room.  

“You really didn't think I'd stay away forever did you Alistair?” Martin asked with a sly smile.  “Didn't you realize that someday, somehow I would find a way back to my family?”

Alistair was now pale.  For a moment he was speechless.  He never expected to see Martin Fitzgerald again, never mind today.  For the first time in his life Alistair Crane had been completely blind sided.  

“It took me more than 15 years Crane, but I'm here now and I'm here to stay.  Nothing you can say or do can stop that now,” Martin smiled.

“I demand this man be arrested for embezzling Crane money.  He disappeared all those years ago to prevent going to jail,” Alistair said in a desperate attempt.

Ethan looked at the man with wide-eyed innocence.  “Is this man Martin Fitzgerald?”

“Yes Ethan,” Martin said.  “I'm Martin Fitzgerald and I never stole a nickel of Crane money.”

“Mr. Crane I'm sorry to tell you this but the statute of limitations on embezzling ran out years ago.  Even if Martin embezzled money from Crane Industries, there's nothing that can be done about it now” Sam said trying to hide his grin.

“What about murder then?  Surely there isn't a statute of limitation on murder?” Alistair asked sarcastically.

“No, murder is a very serious crime Mr. Crane,” Sam agreed.  

“Well, I didn't want to cause Sheridan any more heartache, but I see I have no choice,” Alistair said bitterly as he stared with hatred at Martin.  “Sheridan dear, that nightmare you had all those years ago wasn't a nightmare after all.  It was real.  You were a witness to a heinous crime.  Martin Fitzgerald murdered a man right here in this house.”

“Not a nightmare Father?”  Sheridan asked curiously.  “All these years I've insisted it was real and you insisted it was nothing but a nightmare.  Now you expect me to believe it was real?”

“Yes Sheridan,” Alistair said with authority.  “That's exactly what I expect you to believe.  Julian was there that night.  He saw the whole thing happen.  He's a witness to Martin murdering a man.”

“Forgive me Father, but my memory seems to be failing me.  Maybe it's these handcuffs on my wrists, but I don't recall a thing!”  Julian shot his father a knowing smile which only caused Alistair to see red.

Sheridan smiled at her father.  She grabbed Luis' arm for comfort.  “Father, I have a confession to make.”

Alistair stared at Sheridan with cold hard eyes.  He knew what she was about to say.  His mind was thinking as fast as it could.  There had to be a way out of this predicament.

“Father, just in case you're wondering, I remember everything that happened that night.  I know it wasn't a nightmare and I know Martin didn't kill that man.  Martin did everything he could to protect me from being assaulted by that filthy man.  We thought he was dead, but he wasn't and when he stood up to fight again, you came in and shot him in the head.  You killed him Father, not Martin.”  Sheridan was trembling when she was finished.  It was the first time she'd ever really stood up to her father.  The man whom she strove to please, but had nothing but contempt for her.  Luis gently rubbed her arm to comfort her.  

“Sheridan, I hardly believe your memory could be intact after all the years of therapy you went through in Europe.  The doctors told me you were a very disturbed young woman and were in serious need of help.  They recommended life long institutionalization, but I couldn't allow that for my little princess.”

Luis was really getting hot listening to Alistair try to manipulate Sheridan.  He knew Alistair was an evil man, but had never seen how easily playing mind games with people was for him.  He protectively wrapped an arm around her waist.

“You don't scare me anymore Father,” Sheridan seethed.  I know what happened that night.  Martin's story and mine are the same.  We both know what happened.  The real question Father,”  Sheridan asked with a superior grin. is who was that man?  And why did you force Martin to leave Harmony and his family?”

“I did nothing of the sort,” Alistair insisted as he shifted his weight nervously.

“Yes Father, do tell us please,” Julian implored with an evil grin.

“None of you know what you're talking about,” Alistair said as he surveyed the room in anticipation of the need to find an escape route.  He saw none.  There were uniformed officers littering the room, all poised with their hands on their guns.  Alistair was beginning to feel like a caged lion.  He was trapped for the first time.  He was in the same position he had placed so many poor unfortunates over the years.  He didn't like it.  Not one bit.  Even his children were turning against him.

“I think I can explain everything” Martin offered.  “It seems that Alistair made much of his fortune in the porn business.  Not just porn, but kiddie porn.  Minor girls forced to perform sex acts for the viewing pleasure of perverted men like himself.  I accidentally stumbled on it when I was going over the books.  The man that was killed ran that business for him.  He was attempting to seduce Sheridan when I was coming out of Alistair's office.  I ended up fighting with the man to protect her.  He was stabbed with a letter opener a few times and was down.  When he got back up to attack again, Alistair shot him.  He shot him, not to protect Sheridan, but to set me up for murder.  He used that and the threat of hurting my family to force me to leave Harmony.  He threatened to have my daughters become porn stars if I didn't do what he asked.”

“The truth hurts, doesn't it Father?” Julian sneered.  Ethan looked on in horror.  The horror of everything.  What Sheridan must have gone through, the pain the Lopez-Fitzgerald's endured,  Martin being kept from his family for all those years.  He then thought about Theresa.  The thought that his Grandfather would threaten such a beautiful young woman as a child made his sick.  He couldn't believe this was all happening.

Suddenly Alistair Crane began laughing.  His laugh caused chills it was filled with such hatred and vindictiveness.  “It's a nice story Fitzgerald, but you'll never prove it.  There isn't a man alive that can back up your story.  No one can ever prove one word of it.”

“There is one man that can prove it Mr. Crane.”  Another figure emerged form the hallway.  “Bet you never expected to see me again?”  Antonio Lopez-Fitzgerald now came through the door wearing that smile that was so easily recognized.  Ethan knew instantly it was Luis' brother.  He was almost the spitting image of Luis.

“Oh joy!” Julian grinned.  “Another Fitzgerald appears from the dead!  Oh happy day!”

Sheridan, Luis, Martin, Hal, Sam, Antonio and Alistair all turned to him and  said in unison “SHUT UP JULIAN!”  Julian looked back with an innocent stare.

“You know, it was perfect timing that I managed to show up again just in time to let my father and Hal here know where your secret hiding place was.  Another week or so and no one would have ever found it.  It would have been plowed under for all eternity,”  Antonio grinned broadly.  “I must admit, even I was surprised to find the casket down there.  I would have thought you a smart enough man to get rid of a body better than that.  Then again, I'm here aren't I?”

Sam turned to another officer and nodded.  Officer Silvano walked up to Alistair Crane.  “Alistair Crane you are under arrest for murder, conspiracy to commit murder, obstruction of justice, sexual exploitation of minors, child abuse,  importation and transportation of obscene matters and engaging in the business of selling obscene matters. Other charges will be filed at a later time.  Silvano placed a cuff on Alistair's wrist.  
You have the right to remain silent,” Silvano recited as he clasped Alistair's other wrist in the cuff behind his back.   “ Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to be speak to an attorney, and to have an attorney present during any questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you at government expense.  Do you understand these rights Mr. Crane?”

“Yes, I understand them”  Alistair said coldly.  “You don't have a prayer of making any charges stick.  I'll be out before breakfast.”  Alistair glared at the group before him.  

Sam looked around the room.  “O'Brien, please help escort these gentlemen out of here.  I wouldn't want to see anything happen to them en route.”

Silvano, Quinlan and O'Brien led Julian and Alistair Crane towards the door.   Sheridan stared long and hard at her father as he went past her.  Luis held her tightly.  Alistair looked at Sheridan with nothing but contempt.  “I knew you'd be the ruin of this family Sheridan.  I should have let Stan take you.”

“Rot in hell Alistair,” she said.  “You and your son can both rot in hell.”  Sheridan turned her face away from him as the police led Julian and Alistair away.  Sheridan's entire body shook as they walked past.  Luis literally had to hold her up she was shaking so badly.  

No one spoke for a moment.  Everyone was still reeling from what had just happened.  Hal was the first one to speak.  “If I may have everyone's attention” he announced.  “First of all I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your cooperation in this matter.   I realize how difficult this was for all of you considering how emotionally charged these events are to each of you.”

“Sheridan Crane, you are now released from FBI custody.  Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, you are now released from your duties as bodyguard to Miss Crane.  Martin Fitzgerald and Antonio Lopez-Fitzgerald, you are both free to resume your lives as you see fit.  All of you will be required to testify at any trials that may occur relating to these events.”

Mitch Smith, you will enter the FBI witness protection program and you also will be required to testify at the appropriate time.  Except for Mitch you are all free to go.  Be warned the press will be contacting you at some point I am sure. None of you are at liberty to discuss any of the events that happened here tonight, or led up to the events of tonight.  Luis and Sheridan, you are permitted to relay any information you wish in regards to the drug cartel.  That case is closed as far as the FBI and Interpol are concerned.  I will be issuing a statement to the press that may be aired on the eleven o'clock news.  That's all for now.  I'll be in touch.”

With that Hal smiled at the group and walked out of the room to make a phone call.  Before anyone had a chance to move or say anything Ivy Crane walked into her husband's study.  “What on earth is going on here?” she asked.  “I just saw Julian and Alistair being dragged off by the police.  She scanned the large group assembled and as she eyed the group saw Martin Fitzgerald  among them.  “Oh my God!” Ivy clasped her hands to her mouth and  fainted.   Sam who was standing closest grabbed her before she hit the ground.  Ethan ran to his mother's side and the two men carried her to the couch.




                              CHAPTER 26

“Mother!  Mother, are you all right?” Ethan asked with concern as Ivy started coming to.

“What?  How?”  Ivy started to sit up.  Her mind fuzzy, she started remembering what happened.  “Did I see Martin Fitzgerald in here?”

“Yes Mrs. Crane,” Martin smiled as he came forward.

Ivy stared at the man she hadn't seen in years.  She suddenly felt a tear come to her eyes.  “Pilar was right.  She said you'd come back to her one day and she never gave up hope.  Not once since the day you left.”

Martin grinned broadly at the mention of his beloved wife.  `Speaking of Pilar, I haven't seen her yet and I can't wait any longer.  Ladies and Gentlemen, if you'll excuse me I really want to go home.

Sheridan held Luis tightly as she envisioned Pilar's reaction to seeing her husband and son again.  Then it dawned on her.  “Luis, you didn't introduce me to your brother!” She said with mocked hurt in her voice.  She gently nudged his ribs with her elbow.

“Sweetie, I'm sorry Luis said as if coming out of a daze.”  Luis turned to his brother.  “Tone, I'd like you to meet the love of my life Sheridan Crane.  Sheridan, this is my older brother Antonio” Luis introduced the two.

“Sheridan,” Antonio smiled as he gently took her hand and placed a kiss on it, “It's a pleasure to meet you.  I'm impressed that my brother managed to find himself the most beautiful girl on the East Coast.  I guess I didn't come home soon enough, eh Luis.”  Antonio winked at Luis and Luis shot his brother a satisfied grin.

“It's very nice meeting you Antonio and thank you very much” Sheridan said with a huge smile in return.  “I can see that charm does run in the family.  I'm so happy that Luis has his family back.  I know it's the most important thing in the world to him.”

“Speaking of family, don't you think it's about time to see yours again?” Luis asked with a sparkle in his eye.

“Yes.  It's definitely time,” Antonio agreed.

Pilar Lopez-Fitzgerald finished drying the last dish in her kitchen.  She absent-mindedly wiped down the counter as she stared at the lit candles in her kitchen window, saying her nightly prayer that someday her husband and son Antonio would return to her.  

The worst day of Pilar's life had not been the day Martin disappeared, but instead the day she thought he'd died.  Deep in her heart she knew the man who fell through the skylight New Year's Eve wasn't her Martin, but for a brief moment, the pain she experienced was far worse than the pain she'd felt when he or Antonio had left.  Not because he was dead, but because he was no longer an honorable man.  The thought that Martin had turned into a man she could no longer respect was more than she could bear.  That is why she'd insisted Luis get DNA testing done.  That testing proved she'd been right all along and that man wasn't Martin Fitzgerald.

Pilar walked into the living room and wearily plopped herself on the couch to watch the evening news before retiring.  Miguel and Theresa weren't home yet and Luis was acting as Sheridan's bodyguard, so she had the house to herself.  Pilar had become accustomed in the last few months to seeing less and less of her children, but it didn't make it any easier.  She missed having her family around all the time.  

Pilar was barely paying attention to the newscaster when she heard the words “special report” and “Crane” in the same sentence.  She then turned the volume of her TV up and listened intently.

“I'm standing here live in front of the Harmony Police Station where very shortly, sources have informed us that Alistair Crane, the head of the wealthiest and most influential family in Harmony and his son Julian will be arriving in custody.  Sources tell us that each man has been arrested on various charges, but our sources would not disclose that information at this time.”

Pilar sat frozen in her seat.  She couldn't believe what she was hearing.  “Dios Mio!”  Pilar sat in shock barely hearing what was being said.  She saw a cruiser pulling up to the station as a crowd of reporters swarmed it.

“The police car has arrived with Alistair and Julian Crane,” the reporter said breathlessly.  She was struggling to report her story as other reporters and cameramen fought for space.

Pilar watched as Alistair and Julian were taken from the car with handcuffs on their wrists behind their backs.  Neither man looked at anyone.  They walked with police, their heads down trying to avoid cameras in their faces. Despite the poor angle, there was NO mistake.  It was definitely Alistair and Julian and neither looked happy.  “Ivy!”  Pilar said worriedly.  Pilar jumped up and headed for the back door.  She decided that Ivy would need as much moral support as she could get at this point.  Pilar grabbed her purse and keys and left for the Crane mansion.  

Pilar wasn't sure exactly what she would do when she reached the mansion, but decided she needed to be there in case Ivy needed something.  She quickened her pace as she walked towards the house on the hill.

Luis, Sheridan and Antonio left the mansion and returned to the Harmony Hotel.  Sheridan and Luis needed to collect their belongings now that Sheridan was out of danger and neither was under the watchful eye of the FBI.  Sheridan had planned on taking another room at the Hotel, but Luis insisted she stay at his house.  Sheridan tried to argue with him, but to no avail.  There was always room at the Lopez-Fitzgerald home for one more.  Especially Sheridan.  Martin had taken Antonio's car to get home as soon as possible.  He'd dreamed of the day he could hold his precious wife in his arms again and that moment was almost here.

The drive from the Crane Estate to his home seemed to take an eternity.  Martin was so intent on getting home he almost missed her.  Missed his wonderful, sweet wife who was walking quickly in the opposite direction.  He slammed on the brakes and backed the car up, rolling down the windows at the same time.  Martin's heart raced as he saw his wife's profile for the first time in years.  “She hasn't changed a bit,” he said softly as a huge grin spread across his face.

Pilar was deep in thought and didn't pay any attention to the car that was backing up to meet her.

“Hey, Houlihan!”  Martin said playfully.  “Need a ride?”

Pilar stopped dead in her tracks.  “My ears must be playing tricks on me,” she said softly afraid to turn her head.  

“Come on Houlihan, it looks like you could use a ride,” he said again with an impish grin.  

As Pilar started to turn her head slowly, Martin jumped out of the car and walked toward his wife.  He stopped a few feet from her.  Martin's heart was pounding, his lips turned upward into his flashy grin.  “How about it Houlihan?” He asked softly.

Tears began streaming down Pilar's face.  “Martin!  Oh Martin!” She yelled through tears of joy.  Pilar rushed into Martin's waiting arms.  They wrapped their arms around each other so tightly neither one could breathe.

“Oh Pilar,” Martin said as tears welled up in his own eyes, “I've missed you so much.  God how I've missed you!  I've waited for this day for so long now.  This day that I could finally be back in the loving arms of my precious wife.”  Martin pulled back slightly to look into Pilar's deep brown eyes.  He saw her tears.  Tears of joy.  He was so relieved she was happy.  Part of him was afraid she'd be so angry with him for leaving she'd never take him back.  This was the reception he's dreamed for.

Pilar clung to Martin as tightly as she'd ever clung to anything in her life.  She inhaled deeply as she buried her head in his neck.  He still wore the same cologne, Grey Flannel.  She'd noticed others wear it, but none wore it the way Martin did.  On Martin, it made her lose her senses.  Pilar felt a sense of warmth and comfort she hadn't known since the day he left.  Her insides were bursting with joy as she held her loving husband in her arms.

Martin pulled back slightly to look at her beautiful face.  As he stared deep into her glistening brown eyes and saw the smile on her mouth, he found himself filled with more emotion than he'd ever felt in his life.  Seeing her standing there looking lovingly into his eyes caused the tears in his eyes begin to fall down his cheeks.  Martin took his hand and gently caressed her face.  It felt so soft, like silk.  God how he missed the feel of her skin.  He then lowered his head and captured her mouth in a very passionate kiss.  The love and passion he felt for her at that moment far exceeded the love he'd felt the day he married her.  He never would have believed he could love that woman more than the day they married, but each time he looked at her it happened.  Now after fifteen years of forced separation, his love for her had grown tenfold.

A police cruiser was slowly driving by and when they saw a car parked in the middle of the road and a couple kissing on the side of the road, it slowed down.  The officer driving spied them and was surprised to say the least. “Look at those two!” The officer chuckled.  They're acting like teenagers.”

“Get this car moving and get it moving now!” Sam ordered.”

“But Chief!  Ordinance...”

“I don't give a damn about any ordinances.  All I asked you to do was take me home, no stops.  That couple happens to be Martin Fitzgerald and his wife Pilar.  They haven't seen each other in over fifteen years and I'll be damned if one of my officers is going to interrupt them.”

The officer blushed.  “Sorry Chief,” he said shyly.  “I didn't realize.”  The officer grinned as they rode past and shook his head.  

“What are you grinning at?” Sam asked.

“Nothing, really.  I was just thinking now I know where Luis gets it from.  And to think all this time I thought it was his Latin blood, not his Irish.”

Sam laughed.  “Just take me home will you?”

After several minutes of their most passionate kiss ever, Martin and Pilar finally broke apart for air.  Both were completely breathless.  “I see Houlihan, you haven't lost your stuff!” Martin said sweetly as he continued reigning kisses on her face.  “Those lips of yours are hotter than I remember.”

Pilar laughed.  “Martin, I never liked it when you called me Houlihan, do you remember that?”

“I'm sorry Pilar,” Martin said.  “I won't....”

Pilar placed a finger over his lips.  “I never liked it before when you called me Houlihan Martin.  And I really disliked it when you called me `Hot Lips.'  But hearing those names tonight are music to my ears.  You can call me that anytime you want.  In Public, in private.  I do not care who knows about it.  Just so long as it is you that is doing the calling.  Just so long as I hear your voice.  See your face and touch your lips.”

Martin kissed her sweet lips once again.  He couldn't seem to get enough of her, nor her him.  This kiss was briefer than the last, as they both realized they couldn't stay in the middle of the road forever.  “What do you say we go home Hot Lips?  We have a lot of talking to do, among other things.”  Martin winked at her suggestively which caused Pilar to blush.

“I've been waiting to hear those words for so long Martin,” she said happily.  “Let's go home.”

Sheridan, Luis and Antonio decided to stop by the Book Cafe on their way home.  They wanted to give Martin and Pilar some time alone before shocking her again.  Luis and Antonio seemed happier than they ever had in their lives.  Sheridan, who was still reeling from everything, that happened did her best to join in the happiness that her fiancé was feeling.  She truly was happy despite everything that had happened.  She felt as if she were starting a new life tonight.  A life with the man she loved.  The one man who loved her the way she needed to be loved.  As the three of them sat down, Antonio looked around admiring the place.  “Boy they certainly have made changes in here.  I'm impressed.”

“Yeah, Beth's done a great job with the place,” Luis agreed with a small smile.  

“God, Beth!  How is she Luis?”  Antonio asked with a huge grin.  “You guys had just started dating when I left, but you seemed pretty serious to me.”

Sheridan stiffened at the mention of Beth and Luis in the same sentence.  She'd had a hard enough time dealing with the impostors, never mind the real ones.  “I'm sorry,” Antonio said as he saw Sheridan's reaction.  “Did I say something I shouldn't have?”

Luis wrapped his arm around Sheridan and kissed her cheek.  “Don't worry about it Tony, Sheridan knows she's the only girl for me,” Luis said.  His remark was said to Antonio, but it was really meant for Sheridan.  Luis began nibbling at her earlobe playfully.  A huge grin broke out on Sheridan's face and she momentarily forgot what was just said.

“I hate to break this to you little brother, but I don't think Beth knows that” Antonio said with a smirk as he nodded towards the counter.  Beth was standing there trying not to look in their direction, but from the look on her face it was apparent she'd seen how cozy Luis and Sheridan were.

Luis had a look of dread on his face.  “You're right Tony.  She doesn't know.  To tell you the truth, there aren't many people that do know.”

“Are you serious Luis?”  Antonio asked in surprise.  “You guys look so much in love I can't believe no one knows about it.”

Luis and Sheridan looked at each other and laughed.

“What?” Antonio asked.  

“You have no idea Tony,” Luis said still laughing.  

“Care to fill me in?”  Antonio asked curiously.  “We have some time to kill so Mama and Pop can get ahem... reacquainted.”  Antonio grinned devilishly.

“Antonio!” Luis exclaimed.  

“What's the matter Luis?  Just because they're our parents doesn't mean they can't have fun too you know.”

“I know Tony, I just don't want a mental image of it if you don't mind.”

“OK,” Antonio relented.  “Now back to you and Sheridan.  I want to hear all about your sordid past.”

Luis and Sheridan started to tell Antonio about their relationship.  They were so engrossed in their conversation they didn't see Miguel walk in with Reese.  

Miguel and Reese walked up to the counter and ordered their drinks.  They noticed the frown on Beth's face.

“Hey Beth,” Miguel smiled.

“Hey Beth,” Reese said as he pushed his glassed up on his nose.

“Hi Miguel, Reese,” she said doing her best to smile.

“What's wrong Beth?” Miguel asked.  “You look like you lost your best friend?”

“Oh nothing Miguel,” Beth said trying to hide her feelings.  She again glanced over at the table where Luis sat and caught him giving her another peck on the cheek.  Her smile quickly disappeared.  Miguel noticed Beth staring at a table and turned to see who it was.

Miguel immediately saw Luis and Sheridan together.  He noticed how close the two were and immediately surmised they'd patched up their differences.  Miguel turned to Beth.  “Beth I'm sorry.  I know how much you care for my brother.”

“Thanks Miguel,” Beth said.

“Will you be all right?” He asked.

“I'll be fine,” she said trying to smile.  “In my heart I knew he was in love with her.  He would never admit it of course, but I knew.  I just hope she makes him happy.”

Miguel gave Beth an understanding look.  “I'm sure she will, Beth.”

“Hey Miguel,” Reese said, who's that guy with your brother and Sheridan?  He looks just like Luis!”

Miguel and Beth both looked at the other man sitting at the table.  Beth had a stunned look on her face.  Miguel stood there and stared.  “Yeah, he does look a lot like Luis.”

Miguel continued to stare at the man sitting with Sheridan and Luis.  Antonio finally turned his head and saw Miguel standing there staring at him.  Luis and Sheridan saw Antonio looking at Miguel.  

“Time to meet your baby brother Antonio,” Luis said with a huge grin.

“Miguel!” Luis called.


Miguel looked at Luis for a moment and saw him grinning as he waved him over towards him.  “No, it can't be,” Miguel said under his breath as he walked closer to the table.  

“Luis, is that Miguel?” Antonio asked in surprise.

“It sure is,” Luis said quietly as Miguel approached.

“Miguel,” Luis said when he's reached the table.  “I have someone that would like to meet you.  He hasn't seen you since you were a baby.”

A smile slowly crept across Miguel's face as reality set in.  It had to be.  It couldn't be but at the same time, it could be no one else.  “Antonio?” Miguel asked.  “This isn't possible, but you look just like... Antonio, is it really you?”

“Hello little brother” Antonio smiled as he stood up.  “Yeah, it's really me.  I'm home.  For good I might add.”

Miguel threw an arm around Antonio and pulled him in for an embrace.  “I can't believe this!” Miguel said.  “I never thought...”

“You never thought you'd see me is that it Miguel?” Antonio finished.

“I'm sorry Antonio,” Miguel said with a nervous smile.  “I didn't mean it like that.”

“I know you didn't kid,” Antonio smiled.  “I was beginning to wonder about that myself for awhile.”

“So what happened?  Why did you leave?  Why did it take you so long to come back?   Have you seen Mama yet?  Do you know anything about Papa?”  Miguel was becoming quite excited.

“Whoa, whoa Miguel!  Slow down buddy!”  Antonio laughed.  “No I haven't seen Mama yet, yes I know about Papa and I'm only going to explain myself once so I'll do that when we're all together.”

Miguel's eyes lit up.  “You know about Papa?”  Miguel saw the smile on Antonio's face and then he looked at Luis.  Luis was wearing a grin from ear to ear.

“Papa's home Miguel,” Luis said as his eyes watered slightly.  “He's home.”

Pilar and Martin walked up the steps to the house.  The house that they bought together with dreams of a future.  A future filled with dreams, the laughter of children and grandchildren, and growing old together.  A future that was cut short so many years ago, which now would be renewed.  Martin took the keys from Pilar and opened the door.  Pilar moved to step inside, but Martin stopped her.  

“Not so fast Houlihan,” he grinned impishly.  Before she could say a word, Martin swept her into his arms and carried her over the threshold.  

“Martin, what are you doing?” Pilar said with a surprised look.  Her surprise soon turned to pleasure as she wrapped her arms around her husband's neck.

“I just wanted to carry my beautiful wife over the threshold of our home.  Is their anything wrong with that?” He asked with a soft smile.

“No Martin.  Nothing wrong with that at all,” Pilar said quietly.  She tightened her grasp around Martin's neck and placed her head on his shoulder.  “I've missed you so much Martin.  I always knew in my heart you'd come back to me.  Come back to your family.”

“I've thought about nothing else for the past fifteen years Pilar. Everything I did, everywhere I went was for the sole purpose of finding a way to come home.  I never wanted to leave you Pilar.  I hope you understand that.”  Martin's eyes held a sadness that tugged at Pilar's very essence.  She always knew he didn't leave because he wanted too and the look in his eyes confirmed it.  Suddenly a thought occurred to her.

“Martin, does your coming home have anything to do with Alistair and Julian Crane being arrested tonight?”  

Martin looked his wife in the eyes.  “Yes Pilar.  It has everything to do with it.”  Martin walked into the living room and sat down on the couch, never letting go of Pilar.  He saw the frown appear on her face and pulled her into a tight embrace.  “I'm sorry Pilar, but Alistair Crane is the one responsible for everything.  He has destroyed more lives than I care to think about.  I'm just grateful I'm home now and he will get what he deserves.”

“Luis was right all this time,” Pilar said sadly.  “He blamed the Cranes for your disappearance.  He hated the fact that I worked for them.”

“Luis has a good head on his shoulders Pilar.  You've done a wonderful job raising him.”

Pilar's eyes lit up.  “You've seen him?  You've seen Luis?”

“Yes.  And Sheridan.  I never imagined one of our children would get involved with a Crane, but those two are so in love!  I've never seen any two people more in love than those two.  Except us of course.”  Martin gave Pilar a suggestive look and Pilar kissed him sweetly on the lips.

Their kiss heated up quickly.  Both were almost afraid of the myriad of emotions they were experiencing.  Though neither one spoke the words, they both knew the other had remained faithful to their love all this time.  The love they'd shared was so special, neither could ever imagine being with another person. In a way they were both nervous as well.  It had after all been fifteen years since they'd been together.

Pilar hadn't felt this kind of pleasure in so long, she's almost forgotten how good it felt.  Try as she might to break away from their kiss, she couldn't.  She knew Theresa and Miguel would be home anytime and despite the fact that Martin was their father, she still didn't want to get “caught” by their children.   Martin who sensed what Pilar was feeling, slowly broke their kiss.

“Martin,” Pilar said softly.  She raised her hand to gently caress his face.  Martin kissed her hand before she placed it on his cheek.  They both smiled.  Martin leaned in for another kiss.  Just as their kiss stated to build the door swung open from the kitchen.

“Mama I'm ho...”  Theresa stopped dead in her tracks as she saw her mother sitting on the couch “making out” with a man.  Pilar smiled broadly and her cheeks became crimson at the look of shock on Theresa's face.

Theresa regained a little composure.  She threw her hands up in the air and laughed nervously.  “Mama I am so sorry, I just never expected... What I mean is I've never seen you... I mean this is the first... I'll just leave now.”  She giggled nervously as she started backing out of the room.  Theresa was curious who the man was, but could only see the back of her head.  This was the first time in her life she'd ever seen her mother even remotely show an interest in another man.

“Theresita please wait,” Pilar begged.  

“Really Mama, it's O.K.  I understand,” Theresa said shyly.

“No Theresa, I don't think you do,” Martin said as he turned around to face his daughter.  Martin smiled as he laid eyes on the beautiful young woman standing before him.  Theresa wasn't quite three when Martin  left.  He was impressed at how beautiful she was now as a young lady.  “Oh Pilar, she's breathtaking.  I always knew that feisty brown eyed doll would turn into the most beautiful young lady in Harmony.”

Theresa now stood there with her mouth wide open.  She could hear in the back of her mind her father calling her that as a child.  She hadn't even remembered it until this very minute.  She saw his smile, his eyes.  She knew.  Her mother had been right all these years.  Papa would come home one day.  Today was that day.

“Papa!  Theresa yelled as she ran across the room, tears streaming down her face.  Martin stood up and held his arms out as Theresa jumped into them.  Martin picked her up, much the way he'd done when she was little and swung her around the room.  Pilar looked on, tears now pouring from her eyes as well.  

“Oh my God Papa!  You're home!  You're really home!” She cried.   “Theresa felt a feeling she hadn't felt in eons.  The feeling of being in her fathers protective arms.  

“Theresa,” Martin whispered happily as he held her in a bear hug.  “I've missed you so much.  Look at you!” He said as he pulled back to look at her.  There was sadness in his eyes.  “You're all grown up.  You're a beautiful woman, not my little girl anymore.”

“Oh Papa, I may be grown now, but I'll always be your little girl,” Theresa said through her tears of happiness.  She wrapped her arms tightly around her father's waist.  She laid her head on his chest and Martin ran his hands down her long hair.  He faced his wife and smiled.  So far this homecoming was better than he'd ever dreamed.

“Papa, what happened?  Where have you been?”  Theresa asked.

“As soon as everyone is here, I'll explain everything Theresa.  Just remember that much of what is said in this house goes no further.  You'll understand why later.”  Martin knew beyond a doubt he didn't even have to tell Pilar that.  He knew his wife was the most trusted person on earth when it came to secrets.

“Papa's home too?”  Miguel asked with excitement.  “Are you serious Luis?”

“Miguel, when have you ever known me to lie, especially about something like this?” Luis said slightly hurt.

“I'm sorry Luis,” Miguel said sensing his brother's feelings.  “I didn't mean anything by it, it's just so hard to believe.  Especially after everything that happened last New Year's Eve.”

“I understand Miguel,” Luis said in an apologetic tone.  “But yes.  In one night we get our father and brother back.  This is the answer to all our prayers' especially Mama.  She never lost hope.  She never lost faith.  She kept us believing when we lost our faith.”

“Can we go Luis?  Can we go see Papa?”

“We were trying to give them some alone time,” Antonio said.  “To get reacquainted.”

“That's a great idea, but I was just with Theresa and she's home by now.  I'm willing to bet their “alone” time has already been interrupted.”  Miguel said with a pleading look.

Luis and Antonio looked at each other and then looked at the pleading look from their brother.  “Let's go home boys and girl!”  Antonio said with a huge grin.  Antonio wrapped his arm loosely around Miguel's shoulder.  Miguel did the same to him.  Luis left with Sheridan held tightly to him.  The two smiled at each other, happy to be together, happy Luis' family would soon be reunited. Sheridan also felt a warm feeling as she`d been included when Antonio said `Let`s go home`.  Both had a feeling no one would be getting any sleep tonight.

                            CHAPTER 27

Pilar, Martin and Theresa had moved into the kitchen.  Martin and Theresa were seated at the table right next to each other, while Pilar happily brewed a pot of coffee and prepared a late night snack.  Martin sat with his arm around his daughter as she told him of the important days in her life.  Martin was happy to listen to Theresa as she excitedly relayed the events to him, but also felt pangs of sadness as he realized how much he really had missed in his children's' lives.  First communions, graduations, state playoffs, high school plays, proms-- These were all things he'd wanted to share with his children and thanks to Alistair Crane was denied that joy.  He tried to shake the feeling of self-pity and concentrate on the present.  He was in fact home now and nothing was going to change that.  No one would ever force him to leave his family again.

The back door to the Lopez-Fitzgerald home slowly opened and Miguel stood in the doorway and stared at his father.  Martin slowly turned to see who was at the door and saw a handsome teen that could only be one person.  Tears filled Martin's eyes as he saw his youngest child standing before him.  “Miguel!” he said in a choked whisper.

“Papa!” Miguel yelled as he ran into his father's outstretched arms.  “Papa you finally came home!  I knew you'd come home,” he said as he hugged his father with all his might.  Pilar turned from what she was doing as did Theresa.  Both had tears in their eyes as they watched father and son reunite.   

Pilar held her hands to her face as she cherished this moment.  Her husband was finally home and had seen his children.  Her children had their father back and she had her loving husband.  “Thank you God,” she whispered looking towards the heavens from the kitchen window.  She then noticed the two candles she had still burning in the window.  She picked up one of the candles.  “God has seen fit for me to blow this candle out tonight,” she said for all to hear.

“Pilar wait until Luis gets here,” Martin requested.  “I think he'd like to watch you blow that candle out.”

“Of course,” Pilar smiled.  “He would indeed.”

“Papa, Luis and Sheridan are on their way in right now and..”   

Martin gave Miguel a cautious look.  “I think Luis has a surprise for you Pilar.”

“A surprise?” Pilar said laughing through her tears.  “What could he possible have that would top this?”

“Actually I think he has two surprises”  Martin said with a mysterious grin.

Pilar smiled at her husband in curiosity.  She then saw Luis as he entered the house.  Sheridan was fastened to him like glue.  Luis had a huge grin on his face that just wouldn't leave his face.  He caught his father's gaze and felt his smile grow wider.  Martin just winked at Luis.  There was something about seeing his father standing in the kitchen of his home that stirred his emotions all over again.  Papa was home.  It was real.  Luis fought back the tears as he greeted his mother with a huge hug.

“Mijo!” Pilar exclaimed happily.  “Your father is finally home!”

“I know Mama,” Luis whispered.  “I know.”

Pilar walked over to Sheridan and gave her a huge hug as well.  “Sheridan I'm so glad you could be here with us tonight.”

“I'm so happy for you Pilar!” Sheridan said with tears in her eyes.  “No one deserves this happiness more than you Pilar.”

“Mama, I have a few surprises for you,” Luis said with a devilish grin.

“Oh you do, do you?” Pilar laughed.  “I don't imagine you can top the one I've already had tonight.”

“I may come close Mama,” Luis said with a sly grin.  

Pilar looked at Luis with a puzzled expression.  Luis and Sheridan just stared at each other and smiled.

“Your son's getting married Pilar!”  Martin announced.

“Papa!” Luis said in disbelief.

“Luis, come on now,” his father said with a glint in his eye, “Every time the two of you look at each other like that, it's going to take hours to get any information out of you.”

“Is that so!”  Luis retorted.  Luis tried to sound serious, but he was feeling so happy and carefree tonight, he just ended up with a silly grin on his face.

“Oh my God!”  Theresa yelled as she jumped up excitedly. “That's fantastic!  I always knew you two would get together!”  Theresa was happy for them, but was also happy for another reason.

“Hey, congratulations you two!” Miguel chimed in.


“Oh Luis, Sheridan!  I am so happy for the two of you!” Pilar said with her eyes sparkling.  “This is wonderful news.”  

“Thanks Mama.”

“Thank you Pilar.”  Pilar again gave them both a hug.


“Sheridan, I want you to know that I've always felt a special bond with you.  I love you as if you were one of my own children and now you will be.”

“Thank you Pilar,” Sheridan choked out.  “I've always thought of you as a second mother to me.  You have been the only person in my life that has consistently been there for me when I needed someone.  I don't know what I would have done without you Pilar.”

“You needn't worry about that now Sheridan,” Pilar smiled at her.  “I will always be there for you.  Just as I am for my own children.  I love you Sheridan.”

“I love you too Pilar,” Sheridan whispered.  Sheridan wiped away the new tears that had formed.

“Luis, I'm just going to tell you that if I could have hand picked a wife for you, I couldn't possibly have done a better job.  You and Sheridan will have a long and happy life.”

“Thank you Mama,” Luis said beaming.  He hugged his mother, then pulled pack and grinned mischievously.     “Now Mama, We have one more surprise for you.”

Pilar laughed and shook her head.  She couldn't imagine what could make her happier than she already was.  That is until she saw him standing in the doorway.

“Hi Mama,” Antonio said from the doorway.  He smiled nervously as he watched the expression on his mother's face.  He felt the tears come to his eyes.

“Antonio!!” she screamed as she ran to her son.  “Gracias a Dios!”  Pilar said with tears running down her face.  She hugged her son.  Antonio could feel his own tears falling from his eyes.  

“Oh Mama!”  Antonio wept.  “Mama, I've missed you so much.”

There wasn't a dry eye in the Lopez-Fitzgerald house at that moment.  Theresa walked over to the two of them.  “Antonio?” she said softly.

“Theresa!” he whispered as he pulled her into the embrace as well.  “You were just a little girl when I left!  You're all grown up now!  And Mama, you haven't changed a bit since the day I left!”

Luis held onto Sheridan.  Though they tried to prepare themselves for an emotional reunion, neither could have ever prepared themselves for this.  They held each other tightly.  Martin stood with his hands on Miguel's shoulders.  Everyone was laughing and crying. It was a day that had been dreamed about, wished of and prayed for on a daily basis.  The day when their family would be all accounted for.  The day when Martin and Antonio would return.  

After what seemed like an eternity in one sense and a split second in another, the group all seemed to seek out one thing.  Kleenex!  Pilar retrieved several boxes of Kleenex for everyone to share.  She returned to getting the coffee and pastry when again she saw the candles glowing in the window.  She started laughing as she took a candle in each hand and turned around to face her family.

No one said a word, they just watched as Pilar blew out the flames that had been burning for so long.  Luis flashed back to the only other time his mother had blown one out, remembering the pain he felt that night. The night the Martin impostor had did.  The night he thought he'd been responsible for his own father's death. Now watching her extinguish the flames brought joy to his heart.  The pain gone.  Everyone smiled as they watched the flames go out.  For the last time.  The candles would glow no longer.  The prayers had been answered. Martin and Antonio were home.  Home to stay.

The chatter around the table that evening was endless.  Endless stories of what the two men had missed in their absence.  Sheridan sat on Luis' lap with her arms wrapped around his neck resting her head on his shoulder.  Luis held her by the waist.  Sheridan listened to every story.  She smiled and laughed as she listened to and watched the joy and love this family held.  This is what Sheridan had always dreamed of.  A loving happy family that was always there for each other.  A family that cared about each other.  A family that laughed and enjoyed each other.  She thought for a brief moment of how much she'd missed in her life, but quickly dismissed the thought when she realized that soon she would be part of this family.  She tightened her hold on Luis as she thought about becoming his wife.  God how she loved that man!  Not only was she getting the most handsome, exciting, sexy, loving man in the world as her husband, but also as an extra bonus, she was marrying into a family that was rich in something her own family lacked.  Love.  

Martin finally took control of the conversations.  “I think it's time for myself and Antonio to explain a few things.  Luis and Sheridan are going to help with this, since it is thanks to them and Hal Freeman that Antonio and I are here tonight.”

Everyone became silent and all heads turned towards Martin as he began to talk.  Antonio was seated in between his brother and sister, Theresa hanging onto Antonio's arm and Pilar was seated next to her husband.  Martin held her hand, unwilling to let go.

“What any of us say in this room will remain in this room for the time being,” Martin began seriously.  “If anyone asks any questions of you, just inform them you aren't at liberty to sat at this time.  It will all come out eventually, but not from this family.  I also want to let everyone know I didn't leave because I wanted to and neither did Antonio.  

Martin began his story and with the help of Sheridan and Luis explaining their part, including the FBI sting operation and Sheridan's hypnosis session, the story of Martin's disappearance was relayed to the whole family.   Miguel, Theresa and Pilar were in shock as they listened to the horrendous details involved with the whole ordeal.   Miguel and Theresa were totally dumbfounded as their youth prevented them from having heard such a horrible tale.  Pilar was in shock, because as bad as she knew Alistair Crane to be, she never thought him to be that reprehensible.  

Tears filled everyone's eyes as the story unfolded.  Mixed with it was the plot by Julian and Alistair to kill Luis and again make Sheridan believe Luis was the “bad” guy.  Their hearts went out to Sheridan that she had to live her life with such uncaring malicious people.  Pilar now fully understanding why she sent Paloma to live with Aunt Maria, grateful she allowed her to stay.  

“Antonio's story is a little different from mine,” Martin announced.  “I'm going to let him tell you what happened.

Antonio took a deep breath.  He saw Pilar smile at him with those loving brown eyes he'd missed for so long.  He smiled back and began his story.

“After Papa left, I knew in my heart that the Cranes had something to do with his disappearance.  Luis and I thought a lot alike, but since I was older I decided to do something about it.  I overheard that phone call Papa got the night before he left.  I knew it wasn't normal business and then Papa never came home?  No, something wasn't right.  Papa called here and told me he was leaving.  He refused to say why, only that he had no choice and to make sure I got Paloma out of the house.  He never said the Cranes were involved, but I knew they were.  

Luis nodded his head in agreement with his brother.  He was glad he wasn't the only one that connected that phone call to his father's disappearance.

“I knew Mama wouldn't approve of it, but I had to find out for myself why Papa disappeared.  Once I made sure Paloma was safe, I decided to keep my eye on the Cranes and see what they were up to.  There was a lot of activity going on at the cottage, so I decided to concentrate there.  One night I snuck up to the window and peeked in.  I couldn't believe what I saw.  They were making a porn movie right there!  Let me tell you I was shocked to say the least.  I mean we used to live in that cottage and now they were using it for that!  And the girls were so young!  I was sick.”  Antonio shook his head and grimaced as he recalled the memory.

“Papa didn't need to tell me why he wanted Paloma out of town.  When I saw that, I knew why.  I also knew that his disappearance had something to do with what was going on in the cottage.  So even though I didn't want to watch what was going on, I forced myself to stay there.”

“I didn't see much except I did see one guy go into the fireplace when the shoot was over.  Then I saw him disappear.  I saw another man do the same thing and decided that whatever was down there would lead me to Papa.  I was just about to leave and get the police when I blacked out.  It was two weeks later when I woke up.  It seems that someone caught me there, shot me in the back and dropped me off in the woods either to die or thinking I was already dead.”

“Oh my God Antonio,” Luis exclaimed.  “What happened?  How did you survive?”

“Well, that's the ironic part,” Antonio replied with a funny look.  “Somebody found me and brought me to a hospital out of town.  “They then called Hal and left a message where I could be found.  They also told him that if I ever showed up in Harmony again, I'd be killed for sure.  So Hal and Papa came and when I was well enough took me home with them.  I've been living with Papa all this time.”

Everyone was stunned by this news.  No one could believe Antonio had been shot never mind found by a stranger who contacted Hal.

Luis' face wore a frown.  “Wait a minute.  Something's not right here.  Who knew Papa contacted Hal?  This doesn't make any sense.  Papa did you tell anyone where you were going?”

“No.  The only 2 people I talked to after I left Alistair were Maria and Antonio.  I never told either of them about Hal.”

“Then who knew?” Luis asked.  “Unless you were followed.”

“That's a good bet Luis,”  Martin said.

“Why would Alistair care about Antonio?  He showed absolutely no regard for anyone else's life.  Why would he pull Antonio out of the woods to save him?”   Luis asked suspiciously.

“Why did it have to be Alistair who followed Papa?”  Antonio asked.

“I just assumed...” Luis started to say but didn't finish.

Sheridan suddenly had a strange look come over her face.  “Julian.  It was Julian.”

“Julian?”   Luis asked.  “He's the one who hired Mitch to kill me.”

“Under the direction of Alistair,” Martin reminded him.

“But Julian has done nothing but...”

“Julian has done nothing but exactly what his father told him to do,” Martin explained.  “Luis I told you Julian was a bad apple, but he didn't have the killer instinct that his father did.  Julian in his own way was abused just as much as Sheridan.  Julian spent his whole life trying to please his father.  He was never good enough and Alistair kept asking him for more.  Julian only does what Alistair wanted.”

“Luis,” Sheridan said softly, “I know you hate Julian.  I know what he's done to you, to us, but I also know that deep down he has a heart.  I'm not condoning anything he's done, but if he spared your brother's life, I'd say that says something.”

“Yeah, I guess it would,” Luis agreed reluctantly.  “Are you sure it was Julian?   Maybe it was a hunter or something?”

“No, we're not sure Luis,” Martin said.  “But we will find out.  Remember our talk that we might have to let Julian off light?  In order to get him to testify against his father?”

“Yeah, I remember,” Luis said.

“We fully expect Julian to tell us he saved Antonio's life.  We want Alistair Crane.  He's the truly evil one.  The Crane Empire will be no longer.  Julian won't get off Scott free, but I don't think he should be punished for being manipulated for years by his father.   With Julian's help, we can bury Alistair for good.”

Pilar suddenly stood up and smiled.  “You know what?  I do not want to hear any more about this tonight.  Tonight we need to celebrate the safe return of Martin and Antonio.  I am greatly saddened by all of the events that have happened, but right now I just want to celebrate the happiest day of my life.  The day my husband and son returned home.”

“I agree” Martin said with a huge grin.  “I've been waiting for this day for a long time.”  He wrapped his arms around his beautiful wife.

“Let us not forget Luis and Sheridan's engagement,” Theresa said with a sly smile.  “Mama I always told you true love would win.  It was fate that brought them together.”

Pilar rolled her eyes and shot Theresa a warning look.  Her glance softened and she smiled.  “You are right Therisita.  I too believe they were meant to be.”

Luis held a sleepy Sheridan tightly in his arms and the two smiled at each other.  “Fate, huh?”  Sheridan questioned.  “Do you believe in fate Indy?”

Luis grinned.  “Whatever it is Sheridan I thank God for it.”

Theresa smiled knowingly at her mother and Martin looked on curiously.  He would find out later what that was all about.  But for right now, he planned on enjoying his first night home with his family.

“Oh Sheridan!”  Martin said with an impish smile.  “We have something to tell you about Luis.”

“Oh right,” Antonio laughed.  “She does need to know that Papa.”  Antonio looked at his brother staring at his hat and laughed loudly.

Luis instinctively knew what his father and brother were up to.  He waved his hand as if warding them off.  “No really, there's no need to tell her that.”

“Tell me what?”  Sheridan asked with a curious smile.

“It's nothing really Sheridan.  They just want to embarrass me that's all.”

“Come on now, Indiana Jones doesn't get embarrassed,” his brother kidded.

“Sheridan, did Luis ever tell you what his favorite movie was as a kid?”  Martin asked with a twinkle in his eyes.

Pilar who had been confused until now suddenly laughed.  She'd forgotten but it all made sense now.  Luis gave his mother a pleading look.  “Sorry Luis, but I agree with your father and Antonio on this one.”

Sheridan was now dying of curiosity.  Miguel and Theresa as well.  They were too young to remember and were quite fascinated with Luis' reaction.  They'd never seen him act this way and it was a side to him that pleased them.

“No Martin,” Sheridan said.  “Luis never told me, but I'd love to find out.”  Sheridan gazed at Luis with a twinkle in her eye.   Luis' face was crimson at this point.  She smiled broadly and shook her head at his reaction.  His head was turned avoiding her gaze.

Martin and Antonio proceeded to tell Sheridan about Luis infatuation with Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark.    They told her about every piece of paraphernalia he owned down to his lunchbox and sheet set.  Sheridan listened intently and stole glances at a mortified Luis.  She was quite pleased actually, as she enjoyed calling him Indy and now she knew it would be a permanent nickname.

The stories continued throughout the night.  Theresa Miguel and Sheridan soaked in all the stories Luis and Antonio reminisced about with Martin and Pilar.  Martin and Antonio listened to all the stories the rest shared from the years they'd missed.  No one even realized how late it was becoming until they saw the sun begin to peer through the window.  Exhaustion was setting in, but no one wanted this night to end.  Finally Pilar decided it was time for everyone to sleep.  She knew no one would get much sleep, but they all needed some.  

“Antonio, I trust you won't mind sleeping in Miguel's room?”  Pilar asked.

“Of course not Mama,” Antonio smiled.

“Good,” Pilar smiled.  “Sheridan I believe you'd feel more comfortable staying in Luis' room.”       

Luis looked at his mother in shock.  His mouth practically hanging open.  Theresa was also looking at her mother in shock.  Miguel and Antonio just watched in interest.

“Luis, I wasn't born yesterday.  I know.  I also know you two are in love and engaged to be married. I cannot stop you from doing anything.  I just pray that the two of you will be discrete.”  Pilar turned to Theresa.  “Mija, don't you start getting any ideas, do you understand me?  Your brother is in love and engaged to be married.  Sheridan also has been through a very terrifying experience these last few weeks and if staying with Luis places her at ease, then I will not interfere.”

“Of course Mama,” Theresa said innocently.  

Pilar started gathering the dishes from the table. “Mama, why don't you and Papa go to bed.  Miguel and I will finish cleaning up here.  Everyone else has had a really long day and we don't mind do we Miguel?”  Theresa gave Miguel a pleading look.  Miguel knew Theresa wanted to talk to him.

“Of course,” Miguel answered as he stood up taking the dishes from his mother.

“Thank you both,” Pilar said with a weary smile.  

Everyone got up and said their goodnights or good mornings as the case was.  A smile was plastered to each sleepy face as they headed off to bed.  Martin and Pilar were arm in arm as were Luis and Sheridan.  Antonio was just happy to be home with his family as he carried his stuff up to Miguel's room.  Another chorus of goodnights echoed through the hallway reminiscent of the Waltons, but no one seemed to mind.  In fact when Miguel and Theresa heard what was going on they poked their heads out from the kitchen door and added their two cents.  By the time everything quieted down, the sun was nearly completely up.

Miguel and Theresa finished cleaning the dishes in the kitchen.  “Miguel,” Theresa whispered excitedly,” I have a great idea.”

“What's that Theresa?” Miguel asked as he dried the dish Theresa handed him.

“Let's throw a party for tonight.”

“A party?”

“Yes!  A party!  A Welcome Home party for Papa and Antonio and a Congratulation on your engagement party for Luis and Sheridan.  Oh Miguel, think about it.” Theresa pleaded happily.    It will be so much fun.  The looks on everyone's faces when the see Papa and Antonio again.  The shock, the joy!  It will be wonderful Miguel!”

Miguel thought about it for a minute, trying to imagine the expression on different people's faces.  “You're right Theresa.  It will be fun.  Let's ask Chief Bennett to help us.  He already knows about all of this.”

“Perfect!”  Theresa agreed.  “Let's go talk to him now.”  Theresa grabbed Miguel's hand and started leading him out the door.”

“Now?”  Miguel asked looking at the clock on the wall that indicated it was only seven o'clock.

“No time like the present Miguel!”  Theresa pulled Miguel with her through the kitchen door and the two of them went to the Bennett house.

“Sam, there's someone knocking at the door,” Grace Bennett said as she looked up from her oven that was already in use.  

Sam looked up from his morning paper and cup of coffee.  “It's pretty early.  I wonder who it could possibly be at this hour?”

Grace retreated to the living room to answer the door.  She was rather surprised to see an excited Theresa and Miguel standing there.  They both looked like they were about to burst with news.

“Good morning you guys,” Grace said cheerfully.  “What are you two doing out and about so early?  The kids are all still asleep.”  Grace eyed Miguel carefully.  “Miguel aren't those the same clothes you were wearing when you left here last night?”

Miguel laughed slightly.  “Yes Mrs. Bennett, they are.  We haven't been to bed yet.”

     Grace was about to say something when Theresa stepped in first.  “We need to see Chief Bennett if he's up please.  It's really very important.”  Theresa was practically bouncing in place.  Grace was quite intrigued with the exuberance that shone on their faces.

“Sam's awake.  Come on in,” Grace invited.  She led the happy couple to the kitchen where Sam again looked up from his paper to see the shining faces of the youngest members of the Lopez-Fitzgerald's.  A huge grin flashed across Sam's face.  

“I bet you two haven't been to bed yet,” Sam said with a grin.

“You're right Chief Bennett.  We haven't,” Miguel answered.

“Did you tell Mrs. Bennett?” Theresa asked with a pleading look.

“Not yet Theresa,” Sam answered.  “Grace was asleep when I came home last night.”

“Tell me what?”

Theresa was about to blurt it out and then looked at Miguel and stopped.  “You tell her Miguel.”

Miguel looked at a curious Grace and couldn't keep the smile off his face.  “Papa and Antonio came home last night.”

Sam watched in amazement.  Grace was floored by the news.  “That's wonderful news!  Miguel!  Theresa!  I am so happy for you,” she said giving them each a hug.  “Pilar was be beside herself with joy.”

“Oh she is Mrs. Bennett,” Miguel said happily.

“I've never seen Mama this happy!”  Theresa said with a gleam in her eyes.  “It's like a part of her that died when Papa left has been reborn.  There is new life in her.  I've never seen her like this.”

Sam chuckled at Theresa's description.  “No one deserves that kind of happiness more than your mother,” he said.

“That's kind of why we're here,” Theresa announced.  “We want to throw a huge party for them tonight.”

“A party?” Grace said excitedly.  “That's a wonderful idea!”

“We want all of Mama and Papa's friends and their children there.  We want everyone to know Papa and Antonio are back.”  Miguel was almost as excited about all of this as Theresa was.

“Oh Miguel,” Theresa reminded, “we can't forget about Luis and Sheridan.”

“What about them?” Sam asked curiously.

“They're getting married!  Isn't that great?”  Theresa announced with enthusiasm.

“No kidding?” Sam said surprised.  “I thought they were just saying that to...” Sam's voice trailed off.  He smiled sadly to himself.  He was indeed happy for both of them, yet at the same time a little envious of Luis.  He again looked up at Theresa and Miguel.  “That is good news.  I'm happy for both of them.”

“Luis and Sheridan are getting married?”  Grace was shocked.  “Last I heard they hated each other's guts!  What could possibly have happened?”

“Grace, I'll explain everything to you later.  Just know if two people were meant to be together, it's those two.”

Grace smiled at Sam then returned to Theresa and Miguel.  “I'll tell you what?  Why don't you guys go home and get some sleep.  I'll work on getting this party organized and when you get up you can come over and help.  How does that sound?”

“That's great Mrs. Bennett,” Miguel said.

“Yes, thank you so so much,” Theresa agreed.

“Now off with you both!  You don't want to miss this party do you?”  Grace warned with a smile.

“No way!”  Theresa and Miguel both said.  

They said their good byes and left for home.  Neither quite sure how they were going to sleep after all the excitement.  It wasn't difficult though.  Once their heads hit the pillow they were both out.  Everyone in the Lopez-Fitzgerald house slept better than they had in years.  There was a feeling of love, happiness, safety and security that had been missing for fifteen years.  Those feelings were now back.




                             CHAPTER 28

Sheridan's eyes fluttered open.  She wasn't sure where she was at first, until she felt Luis' warm breath on her neck.  She felt him tighten his hold as he stirred, not quite waking up.  She smiled happily as she remembered where she was and whom she was with.  None of it had been a dream, It was all real, The bad and the good.  As horrendous as the bad was, she'd take it and more in order to continue to live with the good.  She was where she'd always wanted to be.  In the arms of the one man in the world that could truly make her happy.  Luis was the one man who loved her unconditionally.  Sheridan felt as if this was the first morning of the rest of her life.  The sun was shining, Luis was holding her lovingly and all was right with the world.  Life couldn't get better than this.  She would cherish this moment forever.

Sheridan turned in Luis grasp to face him.  He was still sleeping, but she just wanted to look at him.  She wanted to touch him.  He looked like a little boy to her right now, young and innocent.  She smiled as she ran her fingers across the brim of his hat, which he'd worn to bed at her request.  She then traced the outline of his face very gently not wanting to wake him.  He began stirring and she quickly pulled her hand away and watched as a smile crept across his face.

“Morning sweetie,” he said without opening his eyes.  

“I'm sorry Indy,” she said with a playful seriousness. “I didn't mean to wake you.  I just couldn't keep my hands to myself.”

Luis' grin now took over his entire face.  He pulled Sheridan close to him and caressed her face.  “How well I know that feeling!”  

Sheridan leaned in and kissed him gently on the lips.  Their lips lingered for awhile in a series of short tender kisses.

“I love you Sheridan” Luis said finally.  He sighed happily and his eyes sparkled as he lost himself in Sheridan's glowing face.

“I never tire from hearing you say that Luis” she grinned.  “I still don't know what I did to deserve you.  I keep expecting to wake up and find this has all been a dream.”

“It's not a dream Sheridan,” Luis said with an assuring smile.  “The only thing you'll wake up to from now is the embrace of a man who loves you more than he can ever tell you.”

“Oh I like the sound of that” she grinned happily.  Sheridan snuggled against Luis' chest.  “I love you too Indy.”  She pulled the brim of his hat down and covered his eyes with it.  They both burst out laughing.

“Had I known what this hat would do to you, I would have gotten myself one of these months ago,” Luis said as he removed the hat from his eyes.  He raised his brow and gave Sheridan a knowing smile.

Sheridan returned his look and then gave him an impish grin.  “You know, I like you without the hat sometimes too.”  Sheridan removed the hat from his head and tossed it onto the nightstand beside the bed.  “This way I get to run my hands through your hair.”  Sheridan gently ran her fingers through Luis unruly head.   Luis closed his eyes as he enjoyed the feel of her fingers raking through his hair.

Luis opened his eyes again and smiled.  “You know, we have a few things to do today,”

“We do?” Sheridan asked.  She remembered what Luis had told her last evening and the night before that, but figured he was only trying to make her feel better about the “sting.”  She felt the excitement building within her waiting for him to continue.

“We need to find our way to a jewelry store today and if you want we can start discussing possible dates for our wedding.”  Luis wore his killer grin as he watched Sheridan's face light up like a Christmas tree.

“Do you mean it?” She asked.  “Luis you know I told you I didn't need a ring.  Having you love me and want to marry me is all I really need.”

“I know that Sheridan,” Luis said.  “That's one of the things I love about you, but I want you to have a ring.  I want us to go pick out a ring you will love.”

“I can't wait Luis!” Sheridan said excitedly.  “When can we go?”

Luis laughed as he checked his watch and saw it was 11:00.  “We can go right now if you like?”  He stared at her with a twinkle in his eye as he watched her reaction.

“What are we waiting for?” She answered as she jumped out of bed.  

“I thought you said you didn't care if you had a ring or not?” Luis teased.

“I did say that” Sheridan said, “but as long as you insist I get one we might as well get it now!”  Sheridan smiled at him and Luis just chuckled.  “Would you like to shower first or shall I?”

Sheridan suddenly got a devilish look on her face.  “Is anyone else awake?”

Luis knew what she had in mind.  “I'll go check,” he said with a sexy smile.

Luis left the room and returned a few minutes later.  “Everyone is sound asleep,” he said with a slight laugh.  “I can hear Papa snoring.  I almost forgot!”   Luis felt a wave of happiness engulf him at the sound of his father's snoring.  “I used to find it somewhat annoying.  Now it's music to my ears!”

Sheridan walked over to Luis and hugged him tightly.  “Luis I am so happy you finally have your family back.  I know how important your family has always been to you.”

“I am happy Sheridan, but having my father and brother back is only part of the reason for my happiness.  It is something I have dreamed about for a long time.  But having you in my life, having agreed to spend the rest of your life as my wife, my friend, my lover is more than I could ever have asked for.  I have to be the luckiest man on earth right now.”

Luis pulled Sheridan in for a short, but very passionate kiss.  He pulled back and looked at her with a sultry grin.  “Now let's shower and go get your ring.”

Grace Bennett was very busy.  She'd enlisted her husband to help by inviting the guests and she would take care of everything else.  Sam had called all the people he knew the Lopez-Fitzgerald's were friendly with and invited them all to a homecoming party for Martin and Antonio.  There was no reason to keep it a secret that Martin and Antonio were home, as the news was plastered all over the front page of the paper as well as the television.  Details were still sketchy, but it was made known that their reappearance and Alistair and Julian's arrest were connected.  

Sam thought about inviting Ivy and Ethan to the party.  He thought hard about it and decided against it.  Although they had nothing to do with any of this, the fact remained they were still Cranes.  He was a little nervous for Sheridan as it was.  After all she was also a Crane, though she had been as much a victim in this whole mess as the Lopez-Fitzgerald's.  Sam was going to do his best to protect her.  He knew Luis was not about to let anyone hurt Sheridan, but he wanted to do what he could to help.  

Eve and T.C. Russell were ecstatic at the news.  They were the first people Sam called and both wanted to help in any way possible.  As soon as they  heard, Eve and T.C. announced they would drop everything to come over and help.

“I can't believe Julian Crane is in jail,” T.C. said with an evil grin.  “I've been waiting years for something like this to happen.”

T.C. and Sam were setting up tables in the back yard.  “I know T.C.” Sam said as they opened the legs to the next folding table.  “It's been a long time coming, but I think we may finally have seen an end to the Crane reign of terror.”

“I just hope he rots there for the rest of his unnatural life,” T.C. said bitterly.  

“I know you blame Julian for ending your tennis career T.C., “Sam said, “but Alistair is the one who pulled all the strings.  He's the one we want to nail to the wall.”

“Sammy, I know Alistair is one evil man, but I still want to see Julian pay.  He has caused nothing but pain and heartache for my family.”

“Don't worry T.C.” Sam soothed.  “He won't get off too easy.  He'll be a broken man by the time this is over with.”

“I hope so.  What the hell happened anyway Sammy?  I know Martin worked for Alistair and Luis blamed the Cranes for his disappearance, but WHAT happened?”

“I can't tell you that right now T.C.  I wish I could.  It will all come out soon enough.  Just know that Martin did not leave because he wanted to.  Neither did Antonio.”

“O.K.  Then can you tell me how Luis managed to fall in love with a member of the family he hates?”

Sam laughed.  “T.C. you said yourself not to long ago that Sheridan is nothing like the rest of her family.”

“Well that's true, but...”

“T.C. I probably shouldn't say anything yet, so keep this to yourself.  Sheridan has been just as much a victim of her father as the rest of us.  More so than just about everyone except maybe Martin and Antonio.  What he did to her was unthinkable.  Just keep in mind that Pilar has always thought of Sheridan more as a daughter than anything.  From what I now know Martin feels pretty much the same way and I am sure they will embrace her with open arms into their family.  If they can do that, then we all need to do the same.”

“You're right Sammy,”  T.C. consented.  “I have nothing against her personally and if Luis wants to marry her and his family is happy about it, I'll treat her as I would as any non Crane.”

Sam laughed loudly at T.C.'s remark.   “Good.  Now lets get these tables together.  I have a feeling this is going to be one hell of a party.  Hey, do you think Chad would be willing to do some music for us?  I'm sure I can get the equipment the Youth Center uses.”

“I'm sure he'd love to,” T.C. agreed.  “He's very good at it too.”

“He certainly is,” Sam smiled.

T.C. and Sam finished setting up the tables and then returned to the kitchen to see what chore grace had next for them.  They walked into a group of excited teens.  Miguel and Theresa had arrived and had just told Kay, Charity, Reese, Simone and Whitney the good news.  Their parents had refused to tell them what was going on.  They wanted to let Theresa and Miguel break the news, so the TV and newspaper had been forbidden this morning.  Now that Miguel and Theresa were here it was time to put everyone to work.  Grace pulled out her neatly typed “to do” list and gave everyone a job.  T.C., Sam and Eve smiled as they watched the kids scatter happily.  This was going to be SOME party.

Luis and Sheridan were still giggling as they walked down Main Street on their way to the Jewelry store.  Their hands were glued together as if one and their spirits never higher.

“Luis that was close earlier” Sheridan announced through fits of laughter.

“I know.  We're going to have to be more careful.  Mama did say we needed to be discrete.  It's kind of hard in a house full of people though.  It`s a good thing Antonio was half-asleep when he came into the bathroom.”  Luis shot Sheridan a sexy smile and wriggled his brow as he remembered their shower together. “Next time we'll have to remember to lock the door.”

“Maybe we should behave for awhile?” Sheridan asked more as a question than as a statement.  

“Oh Sheridan, I don't think that's going to be possible,” Luis said in a low voice.  “Every minute I spend with you just causes me to fall deeper in love with you.  And the deeper in love with you I am the more I want to show you.”  Luis pulled her closer to him and brazenly began laying sensual kisses down her neck.  

Sheridan giggled as she felt her body begin to respond to his touch.  All Luis had to do was look at her these days and she felt heat surge through her.  “I know what you mean Indy.  I can't seem to concentrate on anything when you and I are in the same room.”

“I hope you can concentrate on one thing at least” Luis said suggestively.

“Oh honey, it's on my mind 24/7” she answered with a devilish smile.

“Well then” Luis said.  “We will just have to get creative.”

“Oh, I like the sound of that!”  Sheridan answered happily.

Luis leaned down and whispered in Sheridan's ear, “We'll just have to do it quietly for the time being.”  He then began kissing her ear.  The feel of his warm breath and his erotic kisses were driving Sheridan mad.

Sheridan was about to respond to him when she saw the Jewelry store in front of them.  “We're here,” she announced.  “Don't worry Indy, I'll get you later.”

“That's a promise I hope,” Luis said with a grin.  Sheridan just shot him a very sultry look and walked into the store.  Luis laughed to himself and followed her inside.

Once inside a friendly lady who obviously worked there greeted Luis and Sheridan.  "Hello" she said with a knowing smile.  I'll bet you two are here for an engagement ring."

Luis and Sheridan looked at each other in surprise.  "How did you know that?" Luis asked curiously.

The sales lady smiled.  "That's easy.  I don't think I've ever seen a couple more in love.  I also noticed the young lady's finger and there's no ring on it."

"Luis I think she'd make a good detective," Sheridan grinned mischievously.  "Maybe you should talk to Sam about her."

"You're Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald!" The saleslady exclaimed.  "I read all about you in the paper.  You must be very happy to have your father and brother back after all these years."

Luis was embarrassed.  He knew his family would be the talk of the town but he hadn't quite figured it would happen so soon.   “Yes I am,” was all he said.  “So can we look at some rings?”  Luis asked politely changing the subject.

“Of course” she answered.  “Won't you please follow me?”  Luis and Sheridan followed the saleslady over to a counter.  They watched as she brought a tray of rings out from behind the counter and placed it in view.  They were both amazed by the luminous diamonds before them.  They both glanced at the rings before them, but their eyes both settled on the same ring.  It was as if the ring was standing alone.  The saleslady noticed their look and pulled that ring from the tray and handed it to Luis.

“Why don't you try this on your fiancée's finger?  See how it looks?” She suggested.
Luis saw an excited smile creep across Sheridan's face.  He took the ring from the saleslady and then took Sheridan's left hand in his.  He gently placed the ring on her third finger.  “Wow!” Luis exclaimed.  “It fits perfectly Sheridan.  It looks like it was made just for you.”

Sheridan couldn't take her eyes off the ring, which now adorned her finger.  She felt something as Luis gingerly slipped the ring in place.  She couldn't explain the feeling, but it was as if it were meant to be.  She looked up at Luis and her eyes were sparkling as brilliantly as the ring.  “Luis it's absolutely gorgeous!” She said in barely a whisper.  “It's the most beautiful ring I've ever seen.”  Sheridan again glanced back at the single carat marquis diamond.  The flawless stone was encased in a platinum setting surrounded by a dozen tiny diamonds intertwined on the band.  

“We'll take it,” Luis said to the saleslady, but his eyes never left Sheridan.  She looked up at him into his penetrating hazel eyes and smiled.  “It's perfect.”

“I agree,” he returned.

“I take it you won't need it wrapped?”  The woman asked knowing the answer.

“No way,” Luis answered with a sly grin.

“No way is right,” Sheridan replied.  “You're really stuck with me now Indy.”  Her tone was mischievous, but her eyes were dancing.

“I want nothing more Sheridan” he said with a heartfelt look.  “Nothing more.”

It was nearly 2:00 p.m. when Pilar opened her eyes.  She nearly panicked for a quick second when she felt a warm body next to hers, but the memory of last night came flooding back.  'Oh my God' she thought happily to herself.  'It's real.  My Martin and Antonio are home.'  She slowly turned herself in his arms so she could look at his sleeping face.  Pilar instantly broke out into a huge smile as the reality once again set in.  Here after all this time, all these years, her husband was home.  She was lying in the arms of the man she adored and had missed terribly for so long.  Pilar snuggled closely to her husband, inhaling the scent that had haunted her memory for so long.  It was fresh and new now.  No longer a painful thought from the past, but a reminder of the future.  

Martin smiled as he felt Pilar in his arms.  He tightened his hold of the wife he loved so dearly and missed so terribly.  He'd envisioned holding her in his arms so many times, but his fantasies never even came close to what he was feeling at this very moment.  Martin opened his eyes to see Pilar watching him adoringly.  A huge grin spread across his face.  “Morning Houlihan,” he said.

“Good Morning yourself,” Pilar responded shyly.  The look on Martin's face at this moment made her blush.  Suddenly Pilar felt like a schoolgirl.  Feelings and emotions that had been buried within her for years were beginning to resurface.  It was wonderful and
nerve wracking all at the same time.

“I've waited so long to be able to do this Houlihan” Martin said with a contented smile.

“Do what?” Pilar asked nervously.

“Wake up in your arms Pilar.  Just feel you close to me again.”

“Oh Martin,” Pilar said dreamily, “I too have dreamed of this moment for a very long time.  I have missed you so much.”

“As have I Pilar,” he said kissing her forehead.  They both closed their eyes and relished in each other.  “We're going to have a lot of lost time to make up in these next few weeks.”

“You mean the rest of our lives Martin don't you?” Pilar asked.

“Don't you worry Pilar,” he grinned.  “I am NEVER leaving again.  You I am afraid, are stuck with me.”

“Martin, I want nothing more in this world than to be “stuck” with you, till Death do us part, Pilar said with a genuine smile.  So Martin, what would you like to do today?  Your first day home with your family.”

Martin looked at Pilar in surprise.  “Houlihan, I'm surprised at you!”  Martin raised his brow and gave her a sultry look.  “Right now all I want to do is get reacquainted with my wife.”

Pilar took a deep inhale of breath.  She smiled lovingly at her husband and silently chastised herself for her nervousness.  After all this was the man she had five children with.  Why was she nervous?

Martin noticed Pilar's nervous demeanor.  “Pilar, if you're not ready for this, I understand.  I'll wait forever for you.  I love you more than I can ever tell you and I want you to want this as much as I do.”  He caressed her face and lost himself in her captivating gaze.

Pilar kissed him sweetly on the lips.  “Martin I do love you and want nothing more than to show you how much.”

Martin grinned at her with the famous Fitzgerald smile.  He and Pilar spent the next few hours getting to know each other again.  Neither one was ever happier in their lives.

Luis and Sheridan returned home to find Antonio sitting in the kitchen looking through photo albums.       He looked up when he saw Luis and Sheridan enter the kitchen.  “Hey little brother, Sheridan,” he grinned.  “And where did you go so early this morning?  Don't think you fooled me for a minute.  I know you were both in there.”  Antonio gave Luis a sly look.

Luis and Sheridan instantly blushed.  They were sure he'd been too sleepy to realize they were both in there.  “Listen, Antonio...” Luis began.

“Don't worry “Indy”  I won't tell Mama or Papa.”  Antonio was quite amused at his brother's reaction.  Here he was a grown man and still could be so easily embarrassed.  Luis heaved a sigh of relief.

“What won't you tell us?” Martin asked as he and Pilar walked into the kitchen.

“Papa,” Luis said in surprise.  

“It was nothing Pop,” Antonio said with a grin.  “You know how I always loved to tease “Indy” here.  “I've found out he hasn't changed a bit since I left.  I'm just having fun with him that's all.”

Martin frowned at Antonio but decided to let it go.  “So where did you two lovebirds go this morning?” Martin asked noticing that Luis and Sheridan had just come in.

“Take a guess?” Luis said with his killer smile.  He took Sheridan's hand in his and extended it so her ring would be visible for all to see.  Sheridan's smile was brighter than anyone remembered.

“Sheridan, it's beautiful!” Pilar said as she stared at the ring on her finger.  “I'm so happy for you both.”  She walked over to Sheridan and examined the ring closer.  “One of you has absolutely exquisite taste.”  She smiled at them both.

“Actually we picked it out together,” Sheridan said proudly.  “The saleslady brought out a tray of rings and we both kept staring at the same ring.  It was almost as if this ring was meant for me,”  Sheridan felt foolish with her last statement, but that was exactly how she felt.

“Pilar sensed Sheridan's discomfort.  “I understand Sheridan,” she said with an encouraging look.  “You and Luis have a love that is very rare.  It is perfectly normal for the two of you to be so in synch with each other.  If ever there were two people that deserved that kind of love and happiness it's you.”

“So little brother, I guess this makes it official then?” Antonio smirked.  “So when are you going to make an honest woman out of her?”

“Antonio!” Pilar gasped in horror.  Martin turned his head to keep from laughing and Sheridan and Luis turned several shades of red.

“Sorry Mama,” Antonio said sheepishly.

“So Luis, have you set a date yet?”  Antonio asked again.  He looked from Luis to his mother who was watching him carefully.

“Not yet,” Luis answered.  “Sheridan and I haven't discussed it yet, but the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned.”  He shot Sheridan a foxy grin.  

“I'm all for that Luis,”  Sheridan said with a sparkle in her eyes.  Luis felt his heart skip a beat at her answer.  

“Sheridan, I don't want to impose, since it will be your wedding, but if I can help you in anyway, please just ask.  I'd love nothing more than to help plan your wedding.”  Pilar smiled at Sheridan.

Sheridan was thrilled.  “I'd like nothing more Pilar.  I'd be honored if you would help us plan our wedding.”

Pilar smiled at Luis and Sheridan. They both noticed how happy Pilar was and it suited her.  Seeing his mother so happy was a dream come true.  For the first time in his life, everything seemed to be going in a positive direction

“Hey Papa, it looks like you'll get one of your wishes!” Antonio said with a smile.

“Which wish is that Antonio?” Martin asked curiously.

“You said you wanted to make it home before any grandchildren were born.  It looks as though you just made it.”  He winked at Luis.

Martin grinned and he saw the look of embarrassment on Luis and Sheridan's face.  “It certainly looks that way.”

Theresa and Miguel came bursting into the kitchen.  They were both laughing excitedly.  “Where have you two been?” Pilar asked with a quizzical brow.

“We've been at the Bennett's Mama.” Miguel said.  “We've been instructed to invite you to dinner and not take no for an answer.”

“Oh Miguel, I don't know,” Pilar began.

“Mama, Mrs. Bennett already is cooking dinner.  She has everything planned.  She's invited all of us over.  The whole family.  I told her I wouldn't take no for an answer.”

Pilar looked at her husband who was smiling.  “Well Pilar, I guess it's time to make an appearance”  Martin said.

“I guess so Martin” Pilar returned with a faint smile.  I guess we'd better get ready then.”

“I'm looking forward to it,” Antonio said.  “Hey Luis is Hank still around here?  I'd love to see him again.  He was always such a little weasel!”  Antonio wore a devilish smile.

Luis gave Sheridan a knowing glance.  “He was gone for awhile Tony but he came back to town about a year ago.”  He hoped his brother wouldn't question him any further.

“Are you two still best buds?  You guys were inseparable as kids.  And so competitive!  Sheridan you should have seen those two!  Competed for everything!  Especially the girls!  You should have seen them!”  Antonio obviously had no idea what he was saying.  He was surprised at the awkward looks he was receiving.

“Hank and I are still friends Antonio,” Luis said unconvincingly.  He then glanced over and saw the look on Sheridan's face.  Luis quickly changed the subject.  “Sheridan and I are going to get changed.  We'll be down shortly.”  Luis grabbed Sheridan's hand and the two made their exit.

As the Lopez-Fitzgerald's entered the Bennett home they were greeted by dozens of their friends welcoming home Martin and Antonio.  There was a huge banner across the living room that read Cead Mile Failte.  It was an old Gaelic greeting which meant a hundred thousand welcomes.  As soon as they were all in the door, Chad cranked up the tunes and the melody of “Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey” was heard through the room.  Everyone in the room began to sing the song with slightly different words.

Glad you came home old Marty,
Glad you came home.
And brought your son home too.

It's been a long time Marty.
We've missed you lots.
I bet your family's thrilled!

And what of you young Tony?
What's going on?
We've been a worried group!

We shed our tears for you both
We knelt and prayed
Pilar, she gave up hope.

We're just so glad you're here,
You've made this special year,
Oh Marty we're just so glad,
Tony we're just so glad,
Boys we're all so glad you're home!


Martin and Antonio were in fits of laughter.  They fought back tears from the overwhelming welcome home they'd just received from all their friends.  Pilar was in tears, as was Sheridan.  Theresa and Miguel had been singing along with the group and Luis was grinning like there was no tomorrow.  

The next few minutes were crazy, as everyone wanted to be the first to welcome Martin and Antonio home.  Theresa and Miguel managed to slip away and find Whitney and Charity, while Luis and Sheridan found their way over to Sam.  

“Sam this was really nice of you,” Luis told Sam once he and Sheridan had wormed their way through the crowd.

“I'd like to take credit for it buddy, but it was Miguel and Theresa's idea” Sam said.

“I should have known,” Luis laughed.  “Those two looked like they were up to something earlier.”  

     Sheridan smiled as she watched the close knit Lopez-Fitzgerald family. She could never have imagined someone in her family throwing a party like this.  Anytime the Cranes had a party there was always a reason, it was never for fun.  Even parties at Christmas were used to impress people, or work a new business deal.  It was never about celebrating the holiday.  She scanned the room and saw dozens of people laughing, joking and carrying on.  The love and warmth in the room was overwhelming.

Grace walked over to the group.  She immediately spied Sheridan's ring.  “Sheridan is that an engagement ring on your finger?” She asked in amazement.

“Yes it is,” Sheridan answered with a huge grin.  “Luis and I picked it out this afternoon.”

“It's absolutely stunning!” She said as she held Sheridan's hand up for a better view.  “Sheridan, I'm so happy for both of you, but I must admit I was a bit surprised when Sam told me.”

Sheridan laughed.  “You won't be the only one surprised I'm sure, but believe me, I've never been happier in my life.”

Grace saw the look of love, happiness and contentment in Sheridan's eyes.  “I can see that” she smiled.  “I wish you all the best for a long and happy life with Luis.”

“Thank you,” Sheridan said shyly.

Grace and Sam headed the partiers outside.  There was a buffet spread out with every type of food imaginable.  Chad began playing the music and two by two people began dancing.  As one point , Martin walked over to Chad and spoke softly to him.  Luis watched his father with interest as he spoke to Chad.  A few minutes later, the music stopped and Martin began to speak.

“I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell each and every one of you how happy I am to be home.  I'm sure I speak for Antonio as well when I say thank you for this most warm welcome.  It means a lot to know a man still has friends like this after all these years.  

“My biggest regret in being gone all these years was not being able to see my family grow up.  I missed them terribly and it was such a shock coming home finding my babies all grown up.  I am fortunate for one thing though.  I am home now and I'm home in time for a very special event.  He's going to kill me for saying this but I just can't help myself!”  Martin glanced proudly at Luis.

Luis turned several different shades of red.  He knew what was coming next.  He held onto Sheridan tightly waiting for the impact.

“I want everyone her to know how happy and proud I am to say that my son Luis is engaged to be married.  Despite everything that has happened, he and Sheridan have overcome it all and will soon be joined in Holy Matrimony.  I know I've told you this before son, but I am very happy for you.  Sheridan is a wonderful person and I'm very pleased she is the one who captured your heart.  I can't think of anyone I would rather have as my daughter in law.  Sheridan, welcome to the family!”  Martin announced happily.   

A cheer went up in the crowd.  Sheridan and Luis stared at each other, embarrassed, happy and very much in love.  People began walking over to the happy couple offering their heartfelt congratulations.

Martin was still standing there and again spoke.  “I've heard that you two do a pretty mean tango!  What do you say you show old Marty what you've got!”

Luis grinned as the familiar music began to play.  It was the same tango music that had played at his mother's birthday party last summer.  Chants came from the crowd.  “Tango!  Tango!  Tango!!”  They were left little choice.  As Luis led Sheridan to the make shift dance floor he suddenly got an idea.  “Hey Papa, if we have to show you our stuff, then I want you and Mama to do the same.”

Martin was thrilled as he grabbed his wife's hand and followed Luis to the dance floor.  Soon the back yard was heated up with two of the sexiest tangos ever danced.  When the dance was over, Luis made one more request of Chad.  He saw his parents about to leave the dance floor.  “Oh no!  Not yet,” Luis said with a smirk.  “I have one more request.”  The music began playing.  Pilar looked at Luis.  Tears in her eyes.  Luis and Sheridan walked back into the shadows to watch.  They watched as Martin and Pilar danced the Paso Doble.  Luis could hardly contain his happiness.   He thought back on all the painful memories of his past.  They were all beginning to disappear. Those memories were fading as new memories were taking the place of the old.

Luis and Sheridan held each other in a loving embrace as they watched Martin and Pilar dance what they thought was the most passionate dance they'd ever seen.  “Luis, do you think we'll still be that much in love when we're their age?” Sheridan asked.

“Oh sweetie, you can count on it!” Luis said softly.

“I love you, Luis.”

“I love you too Sheridan.”
