(I'm about one of the most "spoiled" people around and I love second guessing the writers on the show. When I read a spoiler that said Luis was going to tell Pat's children a fairytale, I couldn't resist writing one of my own!)
************************************
“Come on guys, your mom needs some rest! She's had a very busy day” Luis said with a kind smile as he spoke to Pat's two older children.
“But I want to play with the baby!” whined the spirited little girl with strawberry blonde curls.
“Sweetie, the baby is too little to play with you right now” Luis said gently. He was crouched on his knees so he could be closer to her height. “Besides, you and your brother need to get some sleep. I'm pretty sure it's well past your bedtime.”
“Officer Luis is right Ellie” a very tired Pat called from across the room. “Mommy would really like to see you and Jack go beddy bye.”
“But Mommy!” Jack protested, “We haven't heard a story yet. You always tell us a story before we go to bed.”
Pat was totally wiped out, but she knew the children were right. She ALWAYS told them a bedtime story. “Sheridan” Pat whispered, “Do you think you could hold the baby for a few minutes while I tell my children a quick bedtime story?”
Sheridan looked at Pat and the tiny newborn she held so caringly in her arms, Sheridan had never held a baby, never mind a newborn. She was absolutely petrified. Watching this baby come into the world had probably been the most wonderful event she'd ever seen in her life, but still, she hadn't held him. She watched as Luis delivered him and cleaned him up before presenting him to his mother. She and Luis had exchanged a look at that time that had totally overpowered her. Her mind started to drift back to the moment when Pat's new baby Andrew had been born.
**FLASHBACK**
“It's a boy!” Luis announced excitedly as he held the screaming infant up for his mother to see. Tears of joy were streaming down her face as she saw her new son . Suddenly all the pain she'd been going through for the last few hours was forgotten. Her mind focused on the wrinkled bundle of joy that was learning to use his lungs for the first time.
“Thank you God!” Pat cried happily. “He's perfect!”
“Pat” Luis said soothingly, “I'm going to get him cleaned up a little and tie the cord.”
“Pat he's gorgeous!” Sheridan exclaimed excitedly as she continued to dab the cool washcloth on her face, wiping away the beads of sweat. Witnessing the birth of this child had been absolutely exhilarating. Sheridan couldn't even begin to explain the feeling that came over her. She glanced over at Luis and found him staring at her as he was wrapping the baby in a clean blanket. The look in his eyes at that moment was probably the most beautiful sight she'd ever seen. At that moment she felt every nerve ending in her body come to life. It wasn't a sexual feeling, it was a feeling of overwhelming love. Something she'd been deprived of most of her life. She caught her breath and blushed when Luis' lips turned upward into a smile. He looked at the baby, then back at Sheridan She nearly fainted dead away right there from that one look.
“Sheridan, can you help me here for a minute?” Luis asked in a calm manner.
“Pat, I'll be right back” Sheridan said assuring Pat she wasn't deserting her. “Luis needs me for a minute.” Pat gave her a glowing grin and nodded. Sheridan stood up and slowly walked over to where Luis was kneeling holding the tiny baby.
“What do you need Luis?” Sheridan asked demurely. She felt her heart begin to pound. The close proximity to him at this moment was almost too much for her to handle.
“Remember that string I asked you to get earlier?” he asked. “Get it for me, please.”
Sheridan immediately gathered the string. “Now what?” she asked.
“I want you to tie the string around the umbilical cord. Tie it tight, so that you cut off the blood supply.”
She looked quite uncertain at his request. “Sheridan, it's alright, really” Luis said comforting her. “The baby doesn't need it anymore. Normally it would be clamped off, but since we don't have clamps we're going to tie it off in 2 places and then cut it in the middle.” Luis gave Sheridan a reassuring smile.
Luis pointed to the two places he wanted tied and Sheridan did a perfect job. She then grabbed the scissors they'd sterilized as best they could and cut the cord with precision. A proud smile appeared when she accomplished this task and Luis gave her an approving grin. “And you said you didn't know anything about babies? You did great Sheridan!” He whispered in her ear. Luis stood up with the semi cleaned newborn in his arms and brought him over to meet his mother. Sheridan was still trying to catch her breath from Luis' words and warm breath in her ear as she watched Pat and Andrew begin the bonding process.
`Bonding' she thought to herself. `That's the word.' That is what she felt just happen with Luis. The thought of this only caused her heart to race faster and her breathing to become more shallow...
**END FLASHBACK**
“Sheridan? Sheridan?” Pat called finally breaking Sheridan from her daydream.
“I'm sorry Pat” Sheridan said. “I was just thinking about something.”
“Would you mind holding Andrew for a few minutes and I'll read Jack and Ellie a story?”
Luis was watching this scene and saw the look of fear come across Sheridan's face. “Pat?” Luis asked, “I'll tell the kids a story if you like.”
“Luis, really you've done so much already” Pat said. “I wouldn't dream of...”
“I don't mind at all” he grinned. “I used to tell my younger brother and sister bedtime stories all the time. In fact I rather miss it.”
“Yay!!!” Two little voices cheered. “We want Officer Luis to tell us a story” Jack shouted happily.
“I want a story about a princess!” Ellie yelled jumping up and down.
“No! I want a story with bad guys in it! Officer Luis, tell a story about bad guys you shoot and put in jail” Jack insisted as he tugged on Luis' shirt.
Luis grinned at the five year old twins. As tired as they were, they didn't show it. All the excitement of the evening had them wound tighter than an eight day clock.
“O.K. guys, I know the perfect story to tell you” Luis said with a very playful grin. “Let's go into the other room and give your mom some peace.”
“Yay!” Jack said clapping his hands.
“Goodie!” Ellie cried as she hopped up and down. Both children gave their mom a kiss on the cheek and then followed Luis into the other room for their story.
Pat smiled lovingly at her children as they marched off behind Luis for their story. “Luis is very good with children” Pat remarked as she cuddled her new baby. “He'll make a great father someday.” Pat watched Sheridan's expression as she broke her gaze away from the trio that just disappeared into the other room.
“He sure will” Sheridan smiled without thinking. “He'll be a great father.” Her voice trailed off as she imagined Luis telling a story to their own children. Suddenly she realized what was going through her mind and shook the thought from her head. She silently chastised herself for having such a thought, but couldn't help it. There was nothing she could do anymore to stop these dreams and daydreams of a future with Luis. In her head she knew it could never happen, but her heart.... Her heart told her an entirely different story.
“You'll make a great mother too Sheridan” Pat told her happily.
“Me?” Sheridan laughed in surprise. “I don't know anything about babies. I've never even held one.” Sheridan didn't mean to let that slip, but it was too late to do anything about that. She'd said it.
“Come on? You're kidding right?”
“No, I wish I were” Sheridan admitted sadly.
“Well we're going to fix that right now” Pat said with a sparkle in her eyes. She saw the look of fear come across Sheridan's face and found it endearing. “Sit here by me Sheridan” Pat encouraged patting the side of the bed..
“Pat, no really, I couldn`t” Sheridan said anxiously. “I might drop him.”
“You won't drop him Sheridan, trust me” Pat smiled. Sheridan smiled weakly in return and sat down beside Pat. Pat carefully placed a now sleeping baby Andrew into Sheridan's arms. “The thing you have to be the most careful about is supporting the neck. As long as you do that you'll be fine.” Pat showed Sheridan how to protect the baby's head and neck and then leaned back and watched as Sheridan held her first baby.
Sheridan was totally amazed at the feel of holding a baby. He was light as a feather and looked like a little angel sleeping peacefully in her arms. Sheridan touched his silky smooth skin and was astounded at how soft it felt. Pat smiled at Sheridan. She watched her eyes light up and was moved when she actually saw a tear appear on her cheek. Holding a baby was one of life's pleasures that Pat had always taken for granted. She'd grown up in a large family and held many babies before she had her own. Watching Sheridan right now was similar to watching one of her children experience something for the first time. It was the look of wide eyed innocence and pure pleasure.
******************************
Luis seated himself in the rocking chair in the childrens' room. Jack and Ellie each climbed up one of his legs and they both seated themselves in Luis' lap.
“Officer Luis” Ellie pleaded, please tell us a story about a princess? One as pretty as Sheridan.”
“Sheridan's not a princess!” Jack scoffed at his sister. “I don't want to hear a story about any dumb princess anyway. I want to hear a story about Officer Luis catching the bad guys.”
“Sheridan is too a princess!” Ellie insisted. “She lives in that big house on the hill. The one as big as a castle. Mommy told me so. So there! Hmph!”
Luis grinned listening to the two fighting. It reminded him of Miguel and Theresa when they were that age. “I have an idea. Why don't I tell you a story about a princess who gets rescued from bad guys?”
“Will she be o.k?” Ellie asked with concern.
“Are the bad guys really bad? Is there a cop to arrest them?” Jack asked.
“Well, there isn't a cop, but there is a knight who comes to the princess' rescue and takes care of the bad guys” Luis answered.
“O.K.” they answered in unison.
Luis smiled and then began his tale.
“Once upon a time there was a beautiful young princess. She lived in a huge castle with her father, brother and nephew” Luis began.
“What's the princess' name?” Ellie asked as she leaned her head on Luis' chest and looked up at him with her big blue eyes.
“Why don't you pick a name for her” Luis offered.
A huge grin broke out over Ellie's face. “I want to call her Sheridan. I think Sheridan is so pretty she could be a princess.”
Luis smiled back. “Sheridan it is then. Well Sheridan was very unhappy because her father and brother were mean to her.”
“Where was her mother?” Ellie asked.
“Her mother died when she was a little girl” Luis explained.
“That's so sad. Why were her father and brother mean to her?” Jack wanted to know.
“That's just the kind of people they were Jack. They weren't nice. Anyway, Princess Sheridan was very sad. She wanted very much to find someone that would love her and take her away from her mean family, but every time she thought she'd found a prince that would love her, it turned out they only liked her because they wanted to live with her father the king.”
“One day princess Sheridan met a knight. He was a very nice man and he knew how evil her family was and wanted nothing to do with them. He didn't like Sheridan at first because he thought she was as mean as the rest of her family.”
What was the knight's name?” Jack asked.
“Well, your sister named the princess, so you can name the knight Jack” Luis said with a grin.
“Officer Luis!” Jack said giddily.
“Yeah!” Ellie agreed happily. “I like that.”
Luis giggled slightly at their suggestion. “How about we just call him Sir Luis since he's a knight, not a police officer.”
“O.K. Sir Luis then” Jack grinned.
Luis continued with his story. He was pleasantly amused at the names the children had chosen, considering the subject matter of his story. Little did they know! “Well Princess Sheridan and Sir Luis fought for a long time. Finally Sir Luis realized that Princess Sheridan was very different from her mean family and they became very good friends. Princess Sheridan had a habit of getting into trouble and Sir Luis was always there to save her.”
“What kind of trouble?” Ellie asked.
“Well, the princess was caught in a mudslide and almost drowned. Sir Luis jumped into the water and pulled her to safety. Then she was sick afterwards and he stayed with her until she got better.”
“Wow! What else did he do?”
“Well, one day a very bad man kidnapped Princess Sheridan. Sir Luis chased the bad man onto the top of a castle. He was holding a gun to her head and was going to kill her. Sir Luis had his own gun pointed at the bad man.”
“What happened!!!” Jack asked with his eyes as big as saucers.
“Well, the bad man kept walking backwards away from Sir Luis. What he didn't know was he was walking right to the edge. He took one more step and it was right off the castle. Sir Luis grabbed Princess Sheridan's hand and pulled her to safety, while the bad man fell all the way to the ground!”
“Wow! Serves him right for messing with Sir Luis!” Jack yelled.
“I'm glad he saved Princess Sheridan” Ellie said. “I wouldn't have wanted her to fall off the castle with him.”
“You're right Ellie” Luis said. “Sir Luis didn't want her to fall either.”
“What else did he do?” Jack asked again...
**********************************
Sheridan handed the baby back to Pat. Her smile was radiant and her glow filled the room. “Thank you” she said.
“I told you there was nothing to it” Pat said with a smirk. “You're a natural Sheridan. You'll make a great mother some day.”
“I don't know about that” Sheridan said shyly. “Can I get you a drink Pat?” Sheridan asked changing the subject.
“That would be great” Pat agreed. She hadn't had anything to drink in hours and was very thirsty.
“I'll be right back” Sheridan said with a smile.
“Take a peek in on Luis and the twins. Make sure he's not telling them anything scary or they won't sleep for a week” she said with a laugh.
“Sure thing Pat” Sheridan agreed. Sheridan disappeared and retrieved Pat a glass of cold water. On her way back, she stopped by the children's room. She peeked in and saw the twins in his lap totally enthralled in a story. Sheridan found the whole scene to be quite enchanting. She was then shocked by what she heard next.
“Why was Princess Sheridan mad at Sir Luis? Why did she leave and go to another kingdom?” Ellie asked sadly.
“He didn't know why Ellie” Luis told her. “But he was very sad when she left.”
“Did he ever see her again?” Ellie asked hopefully.
“He sure did. The next day, Sir Luis woke up with a very bad feeling. He knew Princess Sheridan was in trouble again. Big trouble.”
Sheridan stood quietly at the door. `It's a good thing Luis has his back to the door' Sheridan thought. She didn't want to get caught eavesdropping, but couldn't tear herself from the scene.
“Uh oh!” Jack said. “Another bad man like the one that kidnapped her?”
“Exactly, but this time there were two bad men. You see Princess Sheridan didn't realize it, but she saw these two bad men commit a crime and she could get them into a lot of trouble. They decided she had to die so they wouldn't get into trouble. Sir Luis didn't know this at the time either, but he knew she was in some kind of trouble so he set off on a his horse and went to find her.
“Did he find her?” they both asked in unison.
“He found her in the woods running from the bad guys. He brought her back to her castle and the bad men followed.”
“Oh no!” Ellie exclaimed.
“The bad men broke down the door to her castle and Sir Luis took Princess Sheridan and the two of them climbed out onto the ledge through the window. The bad men still followed them. Sir Luis threw a rope to the castle next door and it hooked on to the top. He then grabbed Princess Sheridan and the two of them swung on the rope through the air into the window of the next castle.
“Wow!” Jack yelled. Just like Tarzan!”
“Yeah” Luis laughed, “Just like Tarzan. Well, the bad guys weren't going to give up. They still wanted to kill princess Sheridan. So Sir Luis insisted she come back to their kingdom.”
“Good” Ellie said. “I don't want to see the bad guys get Princess Sheridan.”
“Well, Princess Sheridan was still mad at Sir Luis and didn't want to go with him.”
“How could she still be mad at him when he saved her from those bad men?” Ellie asked in confusion.
“I'm not sure Ellie” Luis answered honestly. “But it didn't matter. Sir Luis made sure Princess Sheridan was safe. One night when she was sleeping he took her back to her kingdom. She was very, very mad at him when she woke up and found out she was home.”
“Was she safe from the bad men?” Jack asked.
“Nope” Luis answered. “The bad men sent another man to finish her off at home.”
“Did Sir Luis save her again?” Ellie asked.
“Wait! Jack yelled. “I have to go potty. Don't answer that until I come back.”
Luis grinned. “O.K. Jack. I'll wait” Luis assured him.
Sheridan quickly darted off before Jack climbed out of Luis' lap. She quickly found her way back to Pat's room and handed her the cold glass of water.
“Thank you so much Sheridan” Pat smiled.
“You're welcome Pat” Sheridan returned.
“What kind of a story is Luis telling the twins?” she asked.
Sheridan blushed. “He was telling them a story about a princess and a knight, actually.”
“Really?” Pat asked curiously. “What story is that?”
“I think it's the story of our lives” she said with a small laugh.
“Ooh, that sounds good!” Pat said with a jovial laugh. “So?”
“So... What?” Sheridan asked.
“So why aren't you back there listening to the rest of it? Don't you want to know what Luis is saying about you?” she asked with a grin.
“You don't mind?” Sheridan asked hopefully.
“Are you kidding?” Pat said, “If I overheard Rob telling the kids or anyone else a story about our lives, don't think for a minute I wouldn't be hanging on every word” she laughed. “Let me know if it's really juicy.”
“Sure thing” she smiled and took off quietly for the children's room. Once again Sheridan positioned herself so she could see them and hopefully they couldn't see her.
“So did Sir Luis save her again?” Ellie asked again now that Jack was back from the bathroom.
“Yes he did” Luis smiled. “And still Princess Sheridan was mad at him.”
“Why?” Jack asked. “Does she stay mad at him forever?”
“Sir Luis still didn't know why she was mad at him, but he still kept her safe. After along time, Princess Sheridan started being nice to Sir Luis again. He was surprised but very glad. They started to become friends again. Princess Sheridan even saved the knight's life one time.”
“Yay!” Ellie shouted. “She must like him again if she saved his life. Did Sir Luis kiss her when she started being nice to him again?”
Luis blushed. “He might have kissed her once I think.”
“Eeww! Kissing!” Jack made a sour looking face.
“I bet she really liked him after he kissed her!” Ellie said with a dreamy smile.
“Well, she did for awhile, but then something happened to make her remember why she was mad at him in the first place. It made Sir Luis very sad.”
“Why was she mad at him?” Ellie asked sadly.
“Well” Luis said, “Princess Sheridan thought Sir Luis said some very mean things about her.”
“Why would he do that?” Ellie asked. “I thought Sir Luis liked her.”
“That's right. Sir Luis liked her very much. He never said anything mean about her, but she said she saw him say them.”
`Why is he telling them the same story? Why does he keep insisting he didn't say he was using me when I know he was?' Sheridan thought to herself. She inched her ear closer not wanting to miss a word.
“Maybe it was one of those bad men dressed up to look like Sir Luis” Jack said. “Maybe they did it so the princess wouldn't let him save her anymore and they could kill her.”
Luis looked at Jack in amazement. “You may be right Jack. Maybe something like that did happen.”
“Could it be?” Sheridan asked out loud in barely a whisper. “Is it possible someone was dressed up to look like Luis?” She studies Luis' reaction closely. He looked as surprised and interested in Jack's comment as she was.
“Did Princess Sheridan ever believe Sir Luis?” Ellie asked.
“No she didn't” Luis said sadly. “They were both very sad about it too. They both really liked each other.”
“What happened?” Ellie wanted to know.
“What about the bad guys? Did Sir Luis ever catch them?” Jack asked.
“No, the bad guys were still out there. Sir Luis hasn't seen them in awhile though.”
“Will Sir Luis still protect the Princess even though she doesn't like him anymore?”
“Sir Luis will do anything it takes to keep her safe from these bad guys or anyone else who tries to hurt her” Luis said softly. “He'd give up his own life if that's what it took to keep her safe.”
“I heard my Daddy say once that he'd die if he had to to keep Mommy and us safe from harm because he loves us so much” Ellie said with a huge yawn. “Does that mean that Sir Luis loves Princess Sheridan?”
Sheridan's ears perked up when she heard the question. She leaned in closer still to listen for the answer. She only wished she could see Luis' face.
Luis was caught by surprise at the question from the small child. He found his cheeks getting slightly red, but this was a fairy tale he was telling, wasn't it?”
“I would say that Sir Luis loves Princess Sheridan very much” Luis said with a wistful smile.
Sheridan took a in a deep breath when she heard the answer. `Does he mean it?' she thought to herself. `Or is he just trying to make it a happy ending?'
“That's so sad” Ellie commented. “He loves her and she doesn't even like him anymore.”
“Yeah, well Sir Luis will find the bad guy that said those things!” Jack said. “He's a knight, remember Ellie?”
“I know” Ellie said. She then looked at Luis with a mischievous grin. “Officer Luis?” she asked, “Do you love Sheridan the way Sir Luis loves Princess Sheridan?”
Sheridan froze in place. Her heart started pounding and she was finding it difficult to breathe. “I should never have come back here” she scolded herself. “He's using me. He couldn't possibly love me.” Sheridan's brain told her to leave now before she heard the answer. She tried to move but couldn't. Her heart was keeping her from leaving before she heard the answer. Sheridan peered her head a little more around the corner of the door frame. She looked directly at Luis. She now had a pretty good look at his profile. She had to concentrate hard on listening to the answer. Her heart was pounding so loudly she was afraid the noise would drown out Luis' voice. She held her breath waiting his response.
Now Luis really was embarrassed. “Why would you ask me that?” Luis wondered.
“Come on Ellie” Jack said smartly, “Of course he loves Sheridan. He looks at her the same way Daddy looks at Mommy.”
Sheridan's hear skipped a beat. `Is it possible? Could it be?' she thought.
“Do you Officer Luis?” Ellie again asked.
“Promise not to tell?” Luis asked Ellie quietly.
“Um Hum!” Ellie said nodding her head furiously hanging on his every word.
“Yes, I do” Luis answered the little girl's question.
Sheridan exhaled the breath she'd been holding and sucked in another one quickly. “Luis loves me?” she said in disbelief. Sheridan started breathing heavily. Luis had just admitted he loved her. So many emotions were going through her right now she was at a loss. She just stood there in total shock.
“Yuck!” Jack said emphatically.
“Just you wait till you're older Jack!” Luis grinned as he rubbed Jack's hair good naturedly.
“Do you lover her as much as Sir Luis loves Princess Sheridan?” Ellie asked ignoring her brother.
“At least that much. Maybe more.” He said with a huge grin.
Another wave of total joy and excitement coursed through her body. Her breathing still heavy. What was she going to do now?
“Does Sheridan love you too?” Ellie continued her inquisition.
Luis glanced at his watch. “Oh wow!” he exclaimed. “Look at the time! You guys need to get into bed and get some sleep.” Luis picked up the children placing them on their feet and stood up.
Sheridan pulled her head back quickly. “I have to get out of here” she said quietly. “I can't let Luis see me.” Sheridan backed up slowly and retreated to the kitchen to compose herself.
“Aw!! I don't want to go to sleep!” They chanted together.
“It's time to go to sleep guys” Luis insisted. They knew he was serious and grumpily climbed into their beds.
“Will you tell us when Sir Luis catches the bad guys?” Jack asked.
“Yeah, I don't want to see Princess Sheridan get hurt” Ellie commented.
“You will be the first to know” Luis assured them. He tucked each child in, gave them a kiss on the forehead and bid them goodnight.
The sleepy children said goodnight and were asleep almost instantly. Luis shut the light off and closed the door halfway. He shook his head and grinned as he made his way back to Pat's room.
Luis walked into Pat's room and found her dozing with a sleeping baby. He smiled to himself and gently took the baby from her and placed him in the cradle next to the bed. Pat's eyes fluttered open when she felt Andrew being taken from her. “Kids asleep?” she asked in a sleepy voice.
“Yeah” Luis laughed. “Your children certainly ask a lot of questions.”
Pat chuckled. “They sure do.”
“Where's Sheridan?” Luis asked curiously.
“She went to get me a glass of water and I asked her to make sure you weren't telling them a scary story” Pat answered. She watched Luis' reaction carefully.
Luis swallowed hard. “Sheridan was listening to the story I told the kids?” he asked as the bottom fell out of his stomach.
“She sure was” Pat grinned. “She came back here and reported the story was about the two of you and I told her she had to go back and listen to the rest of it. You didn't say anything you didn't want her to hear did you?”
“I, uh, I... no... I... It's just...” Luis didn't know what to say.
“Didn't you see her on your way back from the kids room?” Pat asked trying to keep the grin off her face.
“No I didn't” Luis said still in shock.
“Try the kitchen” Pat suggested. She might be in there.”
“Thanks” Luis smiled weakly. He slowly walked to the kitchen. His heart was racing. His mind cluttered with questions. Had she heard him tell the children he loved her? What was she thinking? Did she think he was lying to them? Would she believe it? He figured the look on her face would tell him if she heard him or not. After that it was anyone's guess. One thing he knew. If she asked him if he meant it he wouldn't lie.
Luis entered the kitchen and found Sheridan with her hands on the counter leaning over the kitchen sink. From the looks of her she was in the middle of an anxiety attack.
“There you are” Luis said not wanting to sneak up on her. Sheridan jumped anyway at the sound of his voice. Knowing she was about to come face to face with Luis caused her heart begin to pound even faster.
Sheridan spun around. “Luis!” she laughed nervously. “Did you get the kids to sleep?”
“Out like a light” he answered staring deeply into her eyes.
“Good!” she said lightly. His intense stare was more than she could handle. She fought hard to keep her breathing under control. She glanced away, unable to meet his stare any longer. Luis knew she'd heard him. Now he needed to find out what she thought about what she heard. He walked over towards her. Sheridan was fully aware of his presence. She had an idea by his demeanor she'd been caught.
Luis reached out and gently turned her face towards his so their eyes would meet. “Sheridan I think we need to talk” he said in a very soft tone.
“We do?” she asked in a trembling voice.
“Yes we do” he answered never breaking their gaze.
“Luis, look, I didn't mean to...”
“Yes you did” He grinned.
“But I never expected to hear you say what you did” she answered nervously. His deep stare was causing her to lose all sense of reality.
“What is it you think you heard?” Luis asked softly.
Sheridan paused for a moment, not knowing what to say or do. this was surreal to her right now. Finally she answered him in a tone barely audible. “That you love me.” Sheridan cast her eyes downward, unable to bear it if he denied it at this point.
“I see” Luis said with a nervous sigh. “If you want me to deny it Sheridan I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you. I've told you before I won't lie to you and I'm not going to start now. I do love you Sheridan. With all my heart.”
Sheridan looked up at Luis. Her face was one of happiness and surprise. Tears started welling up in her eyes. Soon they began falling down her cheeks. Luis gently brushed them away. Sheridan searched his face. He now donned a smile. The way he looked at her right now made her feel like her heart was about to explode. She'd never felt so happy to hear those words in her life. Somehow at that moment, she knew he meant them. She knew he'd never tried to use her. This was the Luis she knew. This was the man she was so totally in love with she couldn't see straight. A huge grin appeared on her face. She choked back her tears of happiness so she could speak.
“I believe you Luis” she finally said. “And I love you too.”
Luis' smile turned into a Cheshire grin. Sheridan too was grinning from ear to ear. Luis pulled her into a warm embrace which she gladly welcomed. Luis had finally said the three words she'd waited to hear her entire life. Finally, the right man loved her and she loved him back.
The End
