Chapter 8

“All right everyone, I think Sheridan has had enough excitement for one day” Doc said. “Tomorrow morning we can all sit down and talk and I'm sure Luis and Agent Freeman can fill in lots of missing pieces for Sheridan.”

“That would be my pleasure” Luis smiled. Even with the daggers she was throwing him, Luis couldn't tear his eyes off of her. She was the most beautiful sight he'd ever laid eyes on.

“Why does it have to be him that fills in the gaps for me” Sheridan asked, still not understanding why Luis was the one to be there.

“Sheridan, I think he's the best person to tell you what happened since he is your fiancé” Doc said. “I'll see you all in the morning. Good night.” Doc left Sheridan standing there with her mouth wide opened.

“My fiancé?” Sheridan asked in shock.

“I think I'll see if Liz has rooms for us Luis” Freeman offered. His blue eyes sparkled and an amused grin was seen on his lips as he headed for the door. “Good night Miss Crane.”

Sheridan nodded in Hal's direction, but her eyes were on Luis who was now standing only inches from her. “How is it possible we are engaged? My only recollections of you are that you were trying to use me!”

“Sheridan” Luis said taking her hands in his. Sheridan immediately felt a jolt of lightening fly up each arm as he took her hands in his. She glanced down at her arms, shocked at her reaction to this man. “I know you don't remember most of your life at this point, but believe me when I say you and I were very much in love. I've never loved anyone the way I love you and I never will. When I thought you were dead, I wanted to die right there with you. I didn't think I could go on living without you.”

“Wait a minute, you thought I was dead?” Sheridan asked in bewilderment, pulling her hands out of his grasp as her body was reacting in ways she never dreamed possible. “My family thinks I'm dead?”

Luis nodded. “They still do as far as I know.”

“Then how… How is it that you're here if everyone thinks I'm dead?” She asked rubbing her arms.

Luis smiled. It was a smile that unnerved Sheridan, as the depth of it seemed to hit every nerve ending in her body. “I just knew” he said in a deep throaty tone filled with emotion.

“You just knew?” Sheridan asked, uncertain as to the meaning of it.

“I just knew” Luis said again, this time a whisper. “I don't know how to describe it exactly. Just that if you were really gone I'd know it. I never sensed you'd really left me. That's why I had such a hard time accepting your death. Then my gut started acting up and I had the feeling you were in danger.”

Sheridan was deeply touched by what this man was telling her. This man that seemed almost a stranger…a man who most of her memories of him told her to beware. How was it possible he was so connected to her that he could feel her presence? Sheridan refused to let him sense what she was thinking right now. She still didn't know who he was. “Well, as you can see Officer Lopez Fitzgerald, I'm perfectly fine” she said, “so I don't know why you thought I wasn't.”

Luis just shook his head. He knew what she was doing. “Physically, maybe…” Luis then chuckled to himself. “You know, I'd forgotten how much I missed it having you call me Officer Lopez-Fitzgerald” Luis smirked.

“Officer?” Sheridan repeated as if it was the first time she'd heard the word. She knew she'd been calling him that but didn't really think about why. You're a policeman?”

“Yes ma'am” he grinned nodding his head slightly.

Sheridan felt another one of those headaches coming on and began to rub her temples.

“Sheridan, are you all right?” Luis asked, concern in his voice as he reached out instinctively and grabbed her arm.

Sheridan's mind swirled.

“I hope you had a good time buster because there is no way your sorry behind isn't doing jail time for those moves” the angry cop said, moving towards her car, gun drawn.

”All right buster, get your sorry behind out of the car” the angry cop said as he walked over to her car, ticket book in hand. You've broken three traffic laws. I should arrest you right here.”

“My name is not buster, my behind is anything but sorry and you can't arrest me” Sheridan said defiantly holding her license out for him to read.

“You've broken at least ten laws in the last ten minutes. Give me one reason I shouldn't arrest you?  The cop asked.

“Because my last name is Crane.” Sheridan said, watching the look of shock on the officer's face as he glanced at her license.

“Excuse me?” he asked.

“C-R-A-N-E. Crane as in Alistair Crane and Julian Crane and Crane Industries…”

“You arrested me!” Sheridan said finally, looking up at Luis, shock on her face.

“Why?” Luis asked, hoping she'd remembered more than the fact he'd arrested her.

Sheridan thought for a moment. “I was speeding and crashed into your police car” she found herself saying automatically as if she'd said it a thousand times before. “I tried to use my last name to get out of the ticket and you threw me in jail.” She found herself outraged this man had thrown her in jail, but something told her that wasn't all of it. The cocky grin on Luis' face right now made her sure she was right.

“That's right,” he agreed. “Do you remember anything else?”

Sheridan closed her eyes and tried to envision the scene again. She was angry when she crashed into his car… that much she knew, but why? Had she done it on purpose? She remembered watching him as he approached her with his ticket book in hand. She couldn't help marvel at his rugged good looks and his gorgeous eyes… eyes she'd never seen before.

“That was the first time we met” she said, looking at Luis for confirmation.

He nodded his head, a small smile on his lips. “A meeting neither of us would forget for sometime” he said.

“Ahem” A man's voice could be heard clearing his throat trying to get Sheridan and Luis' attention.

“Hal” Luis said looking up, slightly disappointed for the interruption.

“I got us two rooms Luis” Hal told him.

“Good” Luis answered. “I'll be right out.”

Hal nodded and left, leaving the door opened. Luis turned once more to Sheridan.

“Well, it's been a busy day for all of us” he said quietly, “so I'm going to leave you alone now.”

“Finally” Sheridan said, trying to sound relieved, but her tone lacked conviction. She knew it and could tell Luis knew it as well.

Luis took Sheridan's hands in his own. He smiled at the familiar feeling he got when he held her hands in his own. The connection they shared was still there and it warmed his heart. “Sheridan” he began in a loving voice, “I know you've been through a lot in the last weeks.  It must be horrendous not being able to remember your life before this. I wish I could say I understand what you are going through, but I don't. I can only tell you that I'll be there for you… if you want me.”

Sheridan looked like she was about to say something, but Luis didn't give her time to say anything.

“Right now you only seem to remember the bad times we went through together, Sheridan” Luis continued, “but I have to tell you, things changed between us last year. We got past all the anger and distrust. We fell in love Sheridan. Madly, passionately in love. I have never before in my life felt about another woman the way I feel about you. I love you Sheridan Crane and I always will.”

Luis wanted more than anything to take Sheridan in his arms and kiss her with everything he possessed. He missed her more than words could express. He wanted to show her how much he missed her, but he didn't. He knew she wasn't ready for that and was willing to wait. He'd wait for as long as it took.

Sheridan was left speechless. She wanted to pull away from him, from this man that she was sure hurt her deeply, but found herself being inexplicitly drawn to him. She wasn't sure if it was the way he looked at her or the mesmerizing tone of his voice or the fact that the feeling of her hands in his gave her a sense of love and security that she hadn't known since she woke up on the island. Sheridan found herself becoming lost in his gaze. This man had the most incredibly gorgeous brown eyes she'd ever seen.

“I can't remember” she said in a voice barely above a whisper.

“I know” he smiled. “We can get past this Sheridan. I know we can.”

Sheridan didn't know what to say or do. She just stood there, her body inches from his. She could feel the heat radiating from him. She sensed raw power and found herself feeling excited and terrified at the same time. What if her memories were right? What if he was using her and this was all part of his game?

“I don't know” she said, very much aware of the fact that his eyes seemed to darken right before her own eyes. Suddenly Sheridan felt one of his strong hands move its way up her arm and caress her cheek. Her whole body seemed to come alive.

“I remember another time when you were willing to take a chance, Sheridan” Luis smiled. “A time when you allowed yourself to follow your heart and not your head.” Luis paused for a moment and stared into her deep blue eyes. “You didn't regret it mi amor. Neither of us did.”

Sheridan felt another headache coming on, but tried to ignore it as she was completely captivated with this man in front of her.

“Good night Sheridan” Luis smiled as he slowly withdrew his hand and backed away.

“Good night” Sheridan said. Her head told her she was glad he was leaving. It was pounding and she needed to lie down, but her hear was mourning the loss of the closeness she'd just experienced with this man who was practically a stranger to her. This man who she could only remember using her. But how was it possible for her to feel… to feel like she did around a man she thought she hated?

She watched every move he made until he finally closed the door behind him. Her heart fluttered when he smiled at her and then whispered “I'll always love you” right before he closed the door.

Chapter 9

“Well Liz” Brian smiled swinging his duffle bag over his shoulder, “I guess this is it for awhile.”

“Are you sure you want to do this Brian?” Liz asked.

“I can't believe you're complaining about me wanting to make some money” Brian smirked. “That's not like you Liz.”

“And it's not like you to run away from a challenge” Liz replied with a raised brow. “Why are you really going Brian? I can tell you don't really want to leave Sheridan.”

“I told you Liz” Brian said defensively. “Her fiancé is here. She's going to remember their life together and I'll be out in the cold. Why should I prolong the agony?” Brian wistfully looked down the hall towards the door that was Sheridan's room.

Liz shook her head. “If it were anyone else telling me this I might believe them, but I know you Brian O'Leary. There's something you're not telling me.”

Brian took a deep breath. “I gotta go,” he said, not looking at Liz. “I'll call you when I have an idea how long we'll be out. Goodbye Liz.” Brian turned to leave and almost ran right into Agent Freeman.

“Sorry about that” Brian said, laughing slightly. “I wasn't looking where I was going.”

“No problem” Hal smiled. “Looks like you're ready to set out to sea.”

“Yeah” Brian replied. “I'm due at the dock in ten minutes.”

“Well then, I'll walk with you” Hal said, his smile ever present on his face making Brian just a tad nervous. “I'm going to Bermuda this morning to talk to the army captain and the resort doctor. I need to find out how it's possible that Miss Crane was identified as dead when in fact she is very much alive.”

“Ah, so that's what you're doing up so early” Liz commented, noting Brian's nervousness.

“Would you mind telling Officer Lopez Fitzgerald where I went and I'll be back sometime later?” Hal asked Liz.

“Of course” Liz answered pleasantly. She couldn't help but notice Brian tense at the mention of Luis' name. Somehow she knew there was something Brian wasn't telling her.

“Later Liz” Brian said, waving as he began walking. Hal smiled and followed Brian to the dock. He noticed as did Liz that Brian was nervous for some reason. He made a mental note to talk to Liz later.
**********************

Sheridan opened her eyes slowly, shielding them from the bright sunlight streaming through her bedroom window. She pushed back her covers and walked over to the window to admire the peaceful view of the island, yawning, as she was still tired from her sleepless night. Sheridan had hoped she'd get a good night's sleep and could put all of this new information she'd received the night before into perspective, but it wasn't to happen. Instead she'd had countless dreams, most involving Luis, which left her even more confused that she'd been earlier.

Images flashed through her mind, images she was sure she'd dreamed about last night. Images of another time and place. Dancing… a tango, wrapped tightly in the arms of a man; watching a fight with a beer bottle in her hand; hitting a man over the head with it… standing in front of a rosebush, the same man at her side… arguing with him… running from him… running to him…slapping him… kissing him…hitting him… loving him… all these images flying by her minds eyes at record speed…

Sheridan rubbed her head furiously. “Why can't I just remember? Why won't it just come to me?” She wondered out loud. Despite her first reaction to the memory of Luis, that he was someone not to trust and despite the way she remembered feeling the night before when a simple touch of his hand on hers sent shockwaves coursing through her body, she could still not remember him completely. She still could not remember anyone else in her life. So far it was as if they were dreams of someone else's life.

“It's like a dream,” she repeated to herself. That was the only thing she could relate it to and it was frustrating her completely.

More than ever, Sheridan now wanted to remember her life. Who she was and where the very handsome cop from Harmony fit into it. As she showered to get ready for the day, Sheridan couldn't stop thinking about the way Luis affected her. She could still feel his hands holding hers and the excitement it caused her. She tried to brush it off, acting as if it were nothing, but failed miserably. Instead of the shower helping her forget, it made her  remember a very arousing episode spent with Luis in another shower. She quickly turned the handle from hot to cold. She needed to cool her overheated body down and quickly.  Was it possible? Was Luis right? For some inexplicit reason, Sheridan wanted to see Luis and see him now.

“What am I thinking?” She asked herself once she was finished dressing and looked at herself in the mirror. She brought to mind the scene, which she'd replayed more than once of him standing with his back towards her talking into his cell phone. Sheridan shuddered as she heard his evil laugh telling whomever he was speaking with about his plan to use the very rich Miss Sheridan Crane.

Sheridan stopped in her tracks. “Why would he come here to find me if he knows I know about him?” She asked herself. Well, there was only one way to find out. Sheridan walked up to Liz who was busy sorting the morning mail.

“Morning Liz” Sheridan smiled brightly.

“Good morning Diana… I'm sorry, Sheridan. It's going to take me a little time to get used to your new name” Liz smiled sheepishly.

“Don't worry about it” Sheridan smiled. “This is all taking some getting used to for me as well. I still don't remember much about my past.”

“You will Sheridan” Liz grinned. “And if you don't mind my saying so, that fiancé of yours is a real cutie.”

“He is handsome” Sheridan admitted, a small smile playing on her lips.

Liz cocked her head to the side and watched Sheridan carefully. Something had changed since she last saw Sheridan last night. She no longer held him in complete contempt. “Only handsome?”  Liz laughed. “That man is as sexy as they come. And I have never seen anyone look at a woman with such love and devotion as that man does when looking at you.”

“Do you really think so Liz?” Sheridan asked. “You don't think that's just part of his act?” Sheridan posed the question but it was obvious even to herself that she wasn't really believing it anymore. There was something about him, something about the way he affected her that made her believe her memories were wrong or at the very least not complete.

“No Sheridan” Liz smiled. “That man is head over heels in love with you. I don't know what happened in your past, but judging by the way he stares at you with those puppy dog eyes, I'd have to say you forgave him a long time ago.”

“Maybe” Sheridan said contemplatively. “I just wish I could remember more. This is so frustrating.”

“I'm sure it is” Liz agreed, “But you've started to have memories now and I'll bet you anything you'll continue to have more. You need to spend some time with Luis. I bet given a little while with him, all will come back to you.”

“That's what I was thinking too, Liz” Sheridan smiled. “I think I'll go see what Officer Lopez Fitzgerald is doing right now. Would you mind telling me what room he is in?”

“Sure thing. He is in room 9” Liz answered.

“Thank you” Sheridan smiled sweetly at Liz. She turned and headed down the hallway towards Luis' room.

“Why don't you invite him to breakfast Sheridan” Liz called after her. Sheridan waved her hand at Liz in response and continued on her way. She was determined to once and for all find out if this man truly did love her or if he was using her as her memories eluded. Sheridan hoped it was the former, because there was something about this man that got to her in a way she hadn't imagined was possible.
****************

“That must have been quite the shock for you when you found Sheridan in your fishing net” Hal remarked as he and Brian walked together towards the ocean.

“Yeah, it was” Brian chuckled, remembering vividly fishing Sheridan out of the sea. “She was barely alive and if my captain had anything to say about it she wouldn't be today.” His voice was filled with disdain as he brought to mind his fights with the captain over bringing Sheridan to shore.

“Is that the same captain of the boat you're going out on now?” Hal asked curiously.

“Nah” Brian said dismissively. “I won't go back out with that scum. Not after what he did.” Brian couldn't help but hold the man in contempt.

“Why are you going back out right now?” Hal asked. “It's obvious you have strong feelings for Miss Crane.”

“She has a fiancé” Brian said flatly. “I wanted to give her some space. Hopefully she'll regain her memory.” Brian was hoping Hal would just leave it at that.

“Some space” Hal said carefully. “Somehow I can't see Officer Lopez Fitzgerald ever leaving Miss Crane to give her some space. He's determined she will remember what they had together. He'll never give up on her.”

“Well I'm not Luis” Brian said quickly, anger in his voice.

Hal glanced at him curiously. He didn't expect such a heated reaction from this young man.

Hal and Brian were already at the dock and Brian was grateful. “Look, I gotta go. Good luck to you” he said extending his hand to Hal.

“Thanks” Hal answered. “I hope the fishing goes well.”

Brian nodded and turned, running down the dock towards the vessel he would be joining. Hal stood there watching him with an eagle's eye until he boarded the ship. “He's definitely hiding something.” Hal mumbled. He then headed off in the other direction so he could catch the ferry to Bermuda.
****************************

Luis walked into the hallway to retrieve several clean towels. His phone rang from inside his room while he was in the hallway, so he grabbed two towels and ran back into the room, pushing the door closed on the way, only the door didn't quite make it that far. The door swung back open about a foot, which went unnoticed by Luis in his haste to answer the phone.

“Hello?” He answered quickly, hoping the person hadn't hung up.

“Luis? It's Sam.”

“Sam, hey, how are you?” Luis greeted.

“I'm fine buddy” Sam answered.  “Judging by the sound of your voice I'd say you're in a very good mood.”

“I am Sam. The best mood” Luis said with a Cheshire grin. “I've never felt better in my life.”

“Don't tell me you found her?” Sam asked incredulously.

“Okay” Luis smirked into the phone. “I won't tell you then. But I did.”

“Luis! That's fantastic! It's better than fantastic. It's a miracle!” Sam said excitedly.

“Yeah, it is a miracle, Sam” he said, emotion clearly in his voice.

“How is she? I mean, how did this happen? Why didn't she contact you? Where has she been? What…”

“Whoa! Slow down Sam!” Luis laughed. “One thing at a time.”

“Sorry” Sam grinned. ”Okay, how is she?”

“Physically she's fine” Luis answered truthfully, trying to keep the disappointment out of his voice. He truly was beyond ecstatic that he'd found the love of his life alive, but her loss of memory wasn't something he'd planned on.

“Physically she's fine” Sam repeated. “All right Luis. What's wrong?”

Luis heaved a deep sigh. “Sheridan has amnesia” he said flatly. “She remembers me but she doesn't remember we were engaged to be married.”

“Amnesia?” Sam said in shock. “Wow.” Sam knew only too well what it was like dealing with amnesia. His wife lost the entire memory of her life before meeting Sam and as yet didn't remember any of it despite constant reminders from David Hastings, who was now claiming to be her husband from that time.

“Yeah, I know” Luis said. “She thinks I'm using her. Her clearest memory of me isn't even of me, it's of the impostor hired by her father and Julian to break us up.”

“I am sorry, Luis” Sam said emphatically. He knew this must be tearing Luis up on the inside.

“Thanks Sam” Luis replied.

“Luis, if it's any consolation, I think Sheridan will get her memory back” Sam said. “I did a lot of research on the subject when I first met Grace. Grace has total amnesia, where she doesn't remember anything from her past. It's possible that she may never regain those memories. Now Sheridan has already gotten part of her memory back, so I'll bet you she'll regain it all given time. It might come back in small bits and pieces or something might trigger it and the whole thing will come flooding back.”

“Thanks Sam” Luis said. “That helps me deal with this a lot. I hated the idea that she might never remember that we were in love.”

“That's never going to happen, buddy” Sam grinned. “Even if Sheridan didn't remember you, she'd end up falling in love with you all over again. You two are definitely meant to be.”

“Thanks for that, Sam” Luis grinned happily. That was all the encouragement he needed today. He was determined to win Sheridan back no matter what it took.

“Does her family know yet?” Sam asked.

“NO!” Luis answered abruptly. “Sam, please don't say anything to anyone yet. Hal is on his way to Bermuda right now to find out how it happened that Sheridan's dental records and fingerprints matched the dead woman found at sea.”

“That's a very good question” Sam agreed.

“Sam, I saw those records myself and they were a definite match. Somehow those records were tampered with and I plan on finding out who did it and why. I'm hoping when Sheridan regains her memory she might be able to tell me what she saw that caused her to scream right before the boat blew up.”

“Don't count on that Luis” Sam warned. “Even if Sheridan does regain her entire memory, which I believe she will, there is a very good possibility she will never regain the memory surrounding the accident.”

Luis frowned. “Well, regardless of what she can remember or not, I'm still going to find out what the hell happened.”

“Good luck Luis and I'm happy for you. I'm happy Sheridan is alive. There are a lot of people in Harmony that will be thrilled when they find out” Sam offered.

“I know Sam” Luis replied. “But it's the ones that won't be happy she's alive that worry me. I have a feeling her family is behind this. It's all too convenient.”

“I know how you feel pal, but be careful, will you?” Sam implored.

“Always” Luis grinned.

Sam rolled his eyes and chuckled.  “Keep in touch Luis and let me know if there is anything I can do from this end.”

“I will Sam and thanks. Bye.”

“Bye.”

Luis hung up the phone and headed towards the shower. First on his agenda today was working on Sheridan. He wanted to regain her trust.
**************************

Sheridan walked down the hallway and looked at all the room numbers until she found the room she was looking for. Number 9. She started to knock on the already opened door and it opened even further, giving her a view of his entire room.

“Luis?” Sheridan called.

There was no answer.

“Luis? Are you here?” Sheridan asked a little louder as she tentatively walked part way into his room. She looked around and didn't see him anywhere and was about to leave when she suddenly stopped dead in her tracks, her jaw practically hitting the floor. Emerging from the bathroom was the most breathtakingly gorgeous sight she'd ever seen. There was Luis, standing there clad only in a towel wrapped loosely around his waist, his hard body glistening from the beads of water that were clinging to his upper body.

Luis laughed inwardly when he saw the shocked look on Sheridan's face. He'd seen that look before and decided this was too good an opportunity to pass up. Luis put on his sexiest smile and walked towards her.

“Was there something you wanted?” He asked in a deep voice. His eyes filled with a fire that went out the day Sheridan died and ignited again the moment he laid eyes on her yesterday.

Sheridan's voice caught in her throat. Her heart was beating through her ears. All she could do was stand there with her mouth opened and stare at his magnificent body. She thought she'd about die as he walked towards her. Every cell in her body was reacting to his presence.

“What did you say?” She asked, suddenly regaining her voice.

“I asked if there was something you wanted?” Luis repeated seductively, his brow raised in a very enticing fashion.

Sheridan's eyes fluttered closed. She'd heard him say that before. In her minds eye she could see Luis walking towards her wearing a towel in much the same fashion. She'd been shocked and dropped a cup of coffee. Where was that? In a locker room of sorts. Why was she in a locker room watching Luis in a towel?

“Sheridan, are you all right?” Luis asked with concern.

“I just remembered something” Sheridan responded. “I walked in on you once before just like this, but it was in a locker room or something.”

“Yeah, you did” Luis grinned impishly.

“Where was that?” Sheridan asked innocently. She'd gotten over her initial shock of seeing him in a towel, but it didn't lessen the effect it was having on her hormones.

“At the Youth Center” Luis replied.

“The Youth Center” Sheridan said, trying to place it. “It sounds so familiar.”

“I should hope so” Luis smiled. “You and I have quite a history there.”

“That's why I'm here Luis” Sheridan said nervously. “I want you to help me remember my past.”

“You do?” Luis asked. He was surprise, but very pleased.

“Yeah, I do” She smiled shyly at him.

Luis walked right up to Sheridan and gently ran his hands up and down her arms before taking her hands in his. Sheridan wanted to jump out of her skin from the way this man made her feel. She inhaled sharply and forced herself to concentrate on what he was saying rather than what his hands were doing.

“I'm here for you Sheridan” Luis whispered. His whole body ached to take her in his arms at this moment and kiss her with all his might, but he didn't dare. Sheridan was in a fragile state at the moment and he wasn't going to do anything to jeopardize the progress she'd made. “Whatever you want me to do, I'll do it.”

Sheridan gazed into his dark, loving eyes and decided she could get lost in them forever and be perfectly content. How could a man this loving and this gentle with her possibly be using her> There had to be a mistake.

“There is something I'd like you to do for me Luis” Sheridan asked nervously. “I've been thinking about it and I think it might trigger some more memories.”

“Anything, just name it” Luis said sincerely.

“Kiss me.”

Now it was Luis' turn to become speechless. His heart raced and his gaze fixated on Sheridan's ruby lips. He wanted nothing more than to feel her soft silky lips on his own. He'd dreamed of it for weeks now. “Are you sure?” He asked, praying she wouldn't change her mind.

Sheridan nodded her head and gave him a cockeyed smile. “I'm sure.”

Gingerly Luis placed his palms on her cheeks and stroked them ever so gently. Sheridan took a deep intake of breath, his every move causing more feelings to stir within. She trembled slightly as Luis lowered his head and closed the distance until his lips met hers in a soft and gentle kiss.

The feeling of love that engulfed Sheridan the moment Luis' lips touched hers was nothing short of phenomenal. In that instant, Sheridan knew beyond a doubt she was where she belonged. Luis tried to break the kiss intending it to be short, but Sheridan refused to let him go. She slipped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer to her.

Luis' heart was about to burst with joy when Sheridan responded to his kiss. He couldn't hold back the emotion inside of him any longer. Their kiss became urgent and he begged her to allow him to deepen the kiss, which she did without hesitation.

Liz was just about to knock on the door and ask what was taking them so long to make it to breakfast when she saw them in a very compromising situation. She smiled to herself and quietly shut the door. “Way to go Sheridan” she laughed as she walked back to the hotel lobby.

Chapter 10

“Good morning, Captain” Hal smiled, shaking hands with the head of the Bermuda Police. “I'm Agent Hal Freeman. I work for the FBI in Washington.”

“What can I do for you Agent Freeman?” He asked with interest. He was used to FBI agents in Bermuda, but hadn't met Agent Freeman before.

“I was wondering what you could tell me about the investigation that surrounded Sheridan Crane's death about a month ago?”

“Ah yes, Sheridan Crane. A very sad case. Her fiancé was devastated. He's a cop in Harmony I believe.”

“Yes he is” Hal replied. “Officer Lopez Fitzgerald and I are well acquainted, as I am with Miss Crane.”

“How is Officer Lopez Fitzgerald?” The army captain questioned. “He wasn't accepting his fiancée's death at all if I recall. A shame really, but then again, her family was all to willing to accept it.”

“Her family?” Hal questioned. He didn't straighten out his idea that Sheridan was dead; because it was a well-known fact the Bermuda police were crooked. The last thing Hal wanted was this information getting back to the Cranes or person responsible for the identification.

“Yes, it seems that Miss Crane's brother insisted her body be cremated immediately after the identification” he said shaking his head sadly. “That poor man, Miss Crane's fiancé that is, barely had a chance to grieve before the body was disposed of. The men from the crematory were waiting outside the doctor's office for him to make his findings known.”

“He called them before the body was properly identified?” Hal asked in shock.

The army captain frowned. “No, I don't think it was Julian Crane that called. I believe the arrangements were made by his father, Alistair.”

“I should have known” Hal said, shaking his head in disgust.

“Where is the resort doctor?” Hal asked, now wanting to talk to him.

“I am afraid he doesn't work here anymore” he said. “Sad, really. He'd been working here for 15 years and disappeared the day after Miss Crane was cremated.”

“Disappeared?” Hal asked, his curiosity piqued. It was becoming very clear what happened here.

“Yes, he just vanished along with all the files on cases he'd worked on for the last year. It caused quite a problem as I am sure you can imagine.”

“So I assume that the dental records and fingerprints that he used to identify the body disappeared as well?”

“Well, yes, his copies anyway. I still have a faxed copy of the records sent from Harmony.”

“What about records on the woman found?” Hal asked, hoping he would have a copy of those as well.

“What's the point?” He asked. “Your friend Officer Lopez Fitzgerald identified the body himself. He compared the records himself.”

“Yes, he did” Hal agreed. “He compared the records that the resort doctor gave him. The man who mysteriously disappeared the day after Miss Crane was supposedly cremated. Doesn't that strike you as somewhat odd?”

The army captain furrowed his brow in thought. “Yes, I suppose it is odd” he agreed. “But I still don't believe there is any way that woman could have survived both the explosion and the hurricane. She was out there entirely too long. Besides, we haven't found anyone matching her description alive or dead.”

“Did you check all the outlying islands?” Hal asked with a twinkle in his eye.

The army captain knew Hal knew something, but the question was, what?

Sheridan moaned throatily the instant Luis deepened the kiss. Her body was on fire and her mind spun out of control. She ran her hands through Luis' thick hair and continued pulling him closer to her. She remembered these feelings. They were unlike anything another person could ever cause her to feel. Only this man. Only Luis.

Luis held her tightly, her body flushed with his. His body was alive again. He was feeling, something he didn't think possible in the weeks following Sheridan's death, but it was happening. His heart soared with happiness. His soul mate was alive, in his arms kissing him the way it was meant to be. If he thought he loved her as much as he could before the accident he was wrong, because the love her felt for this woman right now was tenfold of how he felt weeks earlier.

“Sheridan, I love you” Luis said in a voice thick with emotion, as he pulled out of the kiss. He then began kissing every inch of her face. He inhaled her scent, then continued kissing her neck and shoulders.

“Oh Luis” Sheridan moaned with her eyes closed. Her heart was pounding out of her chest and his feather light kisses everywhere were quickly sending her completely out of control. She was a goner, this man had her heart, mind and soul.

Suddenly, Sheridan felt another searing pain shoot through her head. She winced and moved her hands to her head, her body going limp right before Luis' eyes.

“Sheridan! Sheridan! Are you all right?” Luis shouted in fear.

“Luis!” she cried only seconds before she collapsed into his strong arms.

“Oh God, Sheridan!” Luis yelled as he gathered her up in his arms and carried her over to the bed. He gently lay her on his bed and felt for a pulse. He breathed a sigh of relief when he realized she was alive.

“Come on baby! Come back to me” he called gently, rubbing her cheeks with the back of his hand. He was on emotional overload at the moment, never having such a rush of love and fear hit him in such a short period of time. What was happening? “Sheridan, please wake up?” He asked quietly. He placed a soft kiss on her lips and was shocked at how cold they felt all of a sudden. Only moments ago those same lips were on fire and now they were cold as ice.

Sheridan began stirring and groaned slightly.

“Sheridan, sweetie, it's me, Luis. Come on angel. Wake up. I can't lose you. Not again” Luis begged. His hands continued caressing her face and he placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.

“Luis” she said weakly, her eyes beginning to flutter.

“Sheridan!” He called. His heart swelled for what seemed the millionth time that morning. “I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere. I'll never go anywhere.”

Sheridan opened her eyes fully and found Luis sitting on the bed, gazing at her with those incredibly gorgeous brown eyes of his. She smiled slightly and reached her arms around his neck and pulled him towards her into a tight embrace. “I remember” she whispered in his ear.  “I remember everything about you.”

“You remember?” Luis questioned, pulling back slightly hoping he'd heard her right. The look in her eyes told him she had even before she said another word.

“The car crash, the Youth Center, the tangos, the impostor, the drug cartel, our engagement, our wedding that didn't happen. I remember all of it” she grinned happily. “I love you Luis Lopez Fitzgerald. Now and always.”

Luis was so excited he was practically jumped off the bed and took Sheridan with him. Sheridan laughed as Luis held her in his arms and swung her around, kissing her every second.

“Luis, I'm getting dizzy” she laughed.

“I'm sorry” Luis said, slowing to a stop. “But you've just made me the happiest man alive.” He was grinning from ear to ear. “I have something for you if you still want it.”

“You do?” Sheridan asked, her blue eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Yeah, I do” he grinned back. He lowered her back to the bed in a sitting position and reached into his pocket. He pulled out an antique wedding band and held it up for her to see.

“My engagement ring!” Sheridan said, tears of joy forming in her eyes.

Luis got down on one knee and held Sheridan's left hand in his. “Sheridan Crane, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?” He asked, his eyes shining with more love than ever before.

“Yes I'll marry you” Sheridan answered through her tears. Her heart was in her throat as Luis slipped the golden ring on the third finger of her left hand.

“How did you get the ring?” Sheridan asked. “I was wearing it last I remember.”

“I found it in the my shirt pocket after the accident” Luis explained. He saw the look of confusion on Sheridan's face and quickly added, “Hey, don't worry about that now. Sam says you may never get your memory back of the accident. All that matters right now is you and me.”

“I love you so much Luis” Sheridan smiled. “I can't believe I ever doubted your love.”

“You remembered Sheridan” Luis returned. “That's all that matters now.” He leaned in and kissed her soft lips reveling in the taste. He'd missed this woman so much it nearly killed him. When he finally parted their kiss he rested his forehead against hers. “I'll never let anything separate us again.”

“Never” Sheridan grinned as she snuggled into his warm embrace.

“Sheridan?” Luis asked.

“Yes, my love?”

“Let's get married right now,” Luis suggested.

“Now?” She asked in surprise.

“Yes, now. Right this minute. I don't want to spend another second without you as my wife.”

“I like the sound of that” she smiled. “But I don't know how well your attire would go over during the ceremony.”

Luis laughed out loud. He was still clad in only the towel he'd wrapped around his waist when he got out of the shower.

“Hello Liz” the man greeted as he walked through the front door to the hotel.

“Jimmy!” Liz smiled. “It's been ages since you've come in here. How've you been?”

“Great, Liz” the tall middle aged man greeted. “Any chance you have a room?”

“A room for you? Always” She grinned. “So how does it happen you need a room anyway? Why aren't you out on your boat?”

“Engine problems” he said simply. “We were just about to shove off when the engine started smoking. Looks like at least a week before we get back out.”

“I'm sorry” Liz frowned.

“I would have stayed on the ship if it were only going to be a day or two, but with a week, I decided I'd take advantage of it and get some shore leave.”

“How long has it been since you've had shore leave?” Liz asked.

“Hmm, let me see” the man said thoughtfully. “I guess about 8 months.”

“Eight months?” Liz repeated. “Well now. I guess you are due for some shore leave. I'll tell you what. I'm going to do what I can so you get the most for your time off.”

“Liz, you don`t have to go to any trouble”  Jimmy said. “It's going to be wonderful just sleeping in a real bed and taking a normal shower.”

“It's no trouble at all” Liz assured him. “Jimmy, did you see Brian? I know he was supposed to go out this morning but he didn't tell me who the charter was. Was it yours?”

“As a matter of fact, Brian was scheduled to go out with us, but he never showed up.”

“He never showed up?” Liz was shocked. “He left here hours ago all packed.”

“I suppose it's possible he heard through the grapevine the trip was postponed” Jimmy suggested.

“That must be it” Liz said in agreement, but she secretly wondered where Brian was and why hadn't he come back to the hotel?

“We have no missing persons reports from any of the outlying islands” The army captain assured Agent Freeman.

“I see” Hal said. “And do you have copies of the records of the body that was cremated?” He asked again.

“No, I am sorry to say the only copy of those records was in the care of the resort doctor.”

“What became of the body?” Hal asked.

“Surely Officer Lopez Fitzgerald told you” he said in sudden surprise.

“No, I'm afraid he didn't” Hal admitted, wondering why Luis would leave out such important information.

“Julian Crane gave the ashes to Officer Lopez Fitzgerald. It was the only decent thing the man did.”

Hal hid his surprise. “Well, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, I'd like a copy of the records sent from Harmony” Hal requested. “Since Miss Crane was a key witness in a major drug operation the FBI was involved with, this is now an official investigation of the FBI. There are rumors of several drug operations here and I need to make sure her death or alleged death wasn't part of it.”

“You don't honestly believe that Miss Crane is still alive” The army captain asked in complete shock. He understood why Luis didn't want to believe she was dead, but certainly a trained FBI agent would realize there was no possibility she could survive such an ordeal.

“Captain, I deal in facts” Hal said matter-of-factly. “And the fact of the matter is the resort doctor that pronounced Sheridan Crane dead is missing, as are the records. The body has been cremated, so it will be extremely difficult to prove he is wrong.”

“I see your point” the Captain agreed.

The Captain left for a moment and retrieved his copy of the records faxed from Harmony. Hal thanked him and then left. He needed to see Luis about getting those ashes. It wasn't common knowledge, but it was possible to extract DNA information from ashes and that was exactly what Hal intended to do.

“Liz! Liz!” Sheridan shouted gleefully as she walked hand in hand with Luis towards the front desk.

“Sheridan” Liz smiled warmly. She took note of Sheridan's glowing appearance and the way her hand looked as if it were an extension of Luis'.

“I remembered! I remember everything about Luis” she announced cheerfully. She then gazed at Luis adoringly and he leaned in and kissed her gently on the lips.

“That's wonderful!” Liz smiled. “I'm happy for you. For both of you.” Liz knew that Brian wasn't going to be happy about this, but it's what she'd warned him against from the beginning.

“Liz, we want to get married” Sheridan said excitedly.

“I'm not surprised. After all, you were engaged before this all happened.”

“Actually, we want to get married right now” Luis grinned. “I don't want to spend another minute without Sheridan as my wife.”

“And the same goes for me” Sheridan smiled. Her words were said to Liz, but she was looking directly at Luis, the man she loved more than life itself.

“You wouldn't know where we could find a Justice of the Peace on this island do you?” Luis asked hopefully. “I know there's one at the Crane resort in Bermuda, but we really didn't want to use him if we can help it.”

“Actually, you might be in luck” Liz smiled. “I just had an old friend check in. He's a fishing boat captain, but he's also a Justice of the Peace, or at least he used to be. Let me go find out if he's still licensed to perform marriages.

“Thank you” Sheridan replied. She snuggled comfortably into Luis' embrace and he kissed the top of her head while they waited for Liz to talk to her friend.

“I can't wait to make you my wife” Luis sighed as he wrapped his arms around his beautiful fiancée.

“Same goes here” Sheridan smiled.

“If something comes up this time baby, I'm not going to be as considerate of other people. This time I plan on being selfish.” Luis kissed her cheek and closed his eyes, just happy to have her in his arms again.

“Luis, I'm so sorry you had to go through all the pain of thinking I was dead again” Sheridan said. “If there was anyway I could have prevented…”

“Shh” Luis soothed. “Sweetheart don't worry about it. It wasn't your fault. Neither one of us planned on this happening. And right now, I don't want to even think about that. You're alive and here in my arms. That's all that matters to me. Nothing else.”

“I love you so much Luis” Sheridan said, turning to face him. “I don't know what I'd do without you in my life.”

“You'll never have to find out Sheridan. Of that I am sure. I'll never let anything separate us again. I love you with all of my heart.”

Sheridan smiled lovingly at him and leaned up to kiss him gently on the lips. The moment her lips touched Luis' she wanted more, as did he. The sweet innocent kiss that was intended, soon escalated into something much more intense.

“Ahem” Liz cleared her throat to get the attention of the lovebirds. She grinned like a schoolgirl watching these two who she knew without a doubt were meant for each other.

Luis and Sheridan broke apart, their cheeks a shade of pink from getting caught “making out.”

“Liz!” Luis laughed. “Sorry about that.” Sheridan smiled and buried her head into Luis' neck.

“You'll be happy to know that my friend Jimmy is indeed a Justice of the Peace and said he would be happy to marry you.”

“That's fantastic!” Luis said with a huge grin.

“Soon my love” Sheridan smiled at him. “Very soon we will be husband and wife.”
***************

“This is so exciting!” Liz exclaimed. “I can't remember the last time there was a wedding here.”

Sheridan and Luis just stared at each other with glowing smiles. They couldn't remember being happier than they were at this moment.

“Are you two ready for this? Liz asked nervously. “I mean do you have everything you need?”

“Liz, this is really sweet of you to worry about us, But all Luis and I need is someone to officiate when we say I do” Sheridan said positively.

“A woman's wedding day should be the most memorable day of her life” Liz insisted. “Rings! Do you have rings?”

“I hadn't thought about that” Sheridan frowned.

“Not to worry” Luis grinned impishly. “Actually I have our rings in my bag. I haven't been able to part with them. They're still exactly as they were before we almost got married the last time.”

Sheridan leaned in and kissed Luis tenderly on the lips. “You think of everything, you know that?”

“I wouldn't say that” Luis laughed. “Just someone so in love with his fiancée he refused to let go. I'll go back to the room and get them.”

Luis returned to his room to retrieve the rings while Liz made plans for a very special wedding luncheon. Sheridan couldn't help but laugh at the way Liz was whipping around getting things ready.

“Hey” Brian said, as he walked up behind Sheridan.

“Brian!” Sheridan exclaimed, greeting him with a huge hug. “What are you doing here? I thought you were going out to sea this morning?”

“It seems as though our trip was cancelled, at least for now” Brian explained. “You seem to be in an exceptionally good mood.” It was obvious to Brian that something had happened in his absence.

“Oh Brian, it's wonderful!” Sheridan said happily. “I remember.”

“You got your memory back?” He asked, trying to hide his disappointment.

“Not all of it” she said. “Just the parts involving Luis.  He's my soul mate, Brian.”

Brian felt as though someone stuck a knife in his heart. He knew all was lost by the look on her face at that moment. It was the look of a woman in love and she wasn't in love with him.

“I'm happy for you” he forced a smile. “Truly I am.”

“Hey, what's going on around here?” Doc asked as he joined Sheridan and Brian. “Liz is running around like a chicken with her head cut off.”

Sheridan positively glowed with happiness this morning. “I remembered him Doc” Sheridan said. “I remember being in love with Luis.”

“Congratulations Sheridan” Doc smiled. “I knew it would be just a matter of time.”

Sheridan turned and saw Luis returning from his room and she ran towards him, greeting him with a short but heated kiss.

“I have the rings” he smiled.

“Rings?” Doc asked curiously.

“Didn't you tell them?” Luis asked, his eyes watching Brian. There was something so familiar about him and he just couldn't place it.

“Not yet. I just finished telling them I remembered you and the love we share.” Sheridan took Luis' hand in hers and turned to Brian and Doc. “Luis and I are getting married as soon as the Justice of the Peace is ready.”

“Well now!” Doc smiled. “Congratulations again, to both of you. That explains why Liz is running around like crazy.”

“Thank you Doc” Sheridan said hugging him.

“Thanks” Luis smiled, shaking Doc's hand.

“Yeah” Brian choked out. “Congratulations.” Again, he put on his best smile, barely making eye contact with Luis.

“Thank you Brian” Sheridan said gently. “Thank you for everything you've done for me.”

“And thank you for saving Sheridan's life” Luis offered, extending his hand to Brian.

“You're welcome” Brian said tentatively taking Luis' hand. He made eye contact with him for a split second and knew it was a mistake. “I did what anyone would have done. Now, if you will all excuse me for a few minutes, I need to find Liz.” Without another word, Brian disappeared from sight.

Luis stood there for a moment staring after the man who had saved Sheridan's life. His facial expression was one of deep thought and he kept shaking his head.

“Luis?” Sheridan asked. “Is something wrong?”

Luis didn't hear her or at least didn't respond.

“Luis? What is it?” Sheridan asked again, this time concern in her voice.

Luis suddenly snapped out of his daze. “My God” he said in shock. “Antonio.”
